Greetings. I have an MS XP SP2 machine that acquired a trojan that hijacked my browser. Google searches bring back porn hits, which has not been going over well with the Mrs. I can't take credit for it either as this is her business pc! The error is making me select a spyware removal tool from some website. I know its a big scam obviously. I updated the symantec AV and scanned the machine twice. Shut off system restore and scanned again but its still here.

System error box says the following:
Big red X - Your computer was infected by unknown trojan. Its dangerous to your system. Click ok to download the antispyware program to clean your sytem! (Recommended)

Also ran Spybot and AdAware. Here is the log file:

Double Click mbam-setup.exe to install the application.

• Make sure a checkmark is placed next to Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, then click Finish.
• If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
• Once the program has loaded, select "Perform Full Scan", then click Scan.
• The scan may take some time to finish,so please be patient.
• When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
• Make sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
• When disinfection is completed, a log will open in Notepad and you may be prompted to Restart.(See Extra Note)
• The log is automatically saved by MBAM and can be viewed by clicking the Logs tab in MBAM.

OT Move it 2 moves files from their original location so rendering Malware useless.
The trojan you had was a variant of IEdefender.
This is classified as a fake alert trojan and yes we deal with this often here.

After that please update your Java:
Older versions have vulnerabilities that malware can use to infect your system. Please follow these steps to remove older version of Java components and upgrade the application. Beware it is NOT supported for use in 9x or ME and probably will not install in those systems

Ugrading Java:

• Download the latest version of Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6 update 5.
• Choose Free Java Download
• Close any programs you may have running and follow the prompts.

After that

• Go to Start > Control Panel, double-click on Add/Remove programs and remove all older versions of Java.
• Check any item with Java Runtime Environment (JRE or J2SE) in the name.
• Click the Remove or Change/Remove button.
• Repeat as many times as necessary to remove each Java version.
• Reboot your computer once all Java components are removed.

Cleanup::

• Make sure you have an Internet Connection.
• Double-click OTMoveIt2.exe to run it. (Vista users, please right click on OTMoveit2.exe and select "Run as an Administrator")
• Click on the CleanUp! button
• A list of tool components used in the Cleanup of malware will be downloaded.
• If your Firewall or Real Time protection attempts to block OtMoveit2 to rech the Internet, please allow the application to do so.
• Click Yes to begin the Cleanup process and remove these components, including this application.
• You will be asked to reboot the machine to finish the Cleanup process. If you are asked to reboot the machine choose Yes.

You will know if the account has administrator access because you will be able to see the System Restore tab. If the tab is missing, you are logged in under a limited account.

Click *Properties
Click the *System Restore tab
Check *Turn off System Restore
Click *Apply, and then click *OK.

2. Reboot.

*UN-Check *Turn off System Restore*
Check *Turn on System Restore

Not sure have you uninstalled all of the java entries in your Control Panel.
If not then do that then try it again.

Disregard my previous post. I was able to download effectively after closing IE and downloading again. I followed all your instructions with system restore and rebooted. Do I need to run any other reports for you?
