Please help, my computer has been infected with mediacodec zlob and netsky. Spysweeper found the netsky and removed it. Nothing I had on my system found the zlob. I ditched the McAfee firewall and downloaded Comodo Firewall Pro. After downloading Comodo it scanned the computer and found zlob. A friend installed Symantec antivirus, which has found nothing at all (even before Comodo was downloaded). That's next to go.

After my first read on the forum on how to remove, I ran Smitfraudfix. The symptoms all receded however I wanted to be sure it was gone. I came back to the website to send my Hijackthis log and found that I should remove smitfraud, as it is malicious? I tried to follow the steps given to remove smitfraud and run adaware, avg, and Panda. None of these would work in Safe mode as was instructed. Most of them have been updated many times over since the instructions were written that I was going by and did not even resemble what was described.

I have since found that there was a problem getting into safe mode. The screens move so quickly it was hard to see, but it kept saying keyboard error. Therefore it was not allowing me to respond to anything and where I thought the system was hung up, I just couldn't communicate with it. Maybe another effect of the trojan. This would mean that all these logs are probably useless. Guess I should run everything again.

I have run all of the above, in addition to Symantec and Comodo and I no longer have anything found. There is still a problem of a user profile that will not let me delete it. I do not trust this at all. What should I do now?

Hi there let me see if I can help. Firstly we will secure your system then run an analysis programme

Your Java is out of date. Older versions have vulnerabilities that malicious sites can use to infect your system. Please follow these steps to remove older version Java components and update:

• Download the latest version of Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6 Update 4 and save it to your desktop.
• Scroll down to where it says "JJava Runtime Environment (JRE) 6 Update 4...allows end-users to run Java applications".
• Click the "Download" button to the right.
• Read the License Agreement and then check the box that says: "Accept License Agreement". The page will refresh.
• Click on the link to download Windows Offline Installation and save the file to your desktop.
• Close any programs you may have running - especially your web browser.
• Go to Start > Settings > Control Panel, double-click on Add/Remove Programs and remove all older versions of Java.
• Check (highlight) any item with Java Runtime Environment (JRE or J2SE) in the name.
• Click the Remove or Change/Remove button.
• Repeat as many times as necessary to remove each Java versions.
• Reboot your computer once all Java components are removed.
• Then from your desktop double-click on jre-6u4-windows-i586-p.exe to install the newest version.

Secured and now a deeper analysis

Please download Deckard's System Scanner (DSS) and save it to your Desktop.

• Close all other windows before proceeding.
• Double-click on dss.exe and follow the prompts.
• When it has finished, dss will open two Notepads main.txt and extra.txt -- please copy (CTRL+A and then CTRL+C) and paste (CTRL+V) the contents of main.txt and extra.txt in your next reply.

There is a problem. First, the newest download for Java is 6.5. However, I downloaded the one that stated "allows end users to run Java applications". Got that installed.

Next, downloaded DSS and ran it. It never produced reports. Never did anything for over 20 - 25 minutes, so I attempted to re-run. Now it will not let me run it. Says that I don't have admin capabilities. Remember in the 1st post, problem deleting other users? The person that attempted to repair this problem initially, creating his own user name. Now I can't get it off. There are two users with my name and the one for him. Mine does not have a password.

Another is that when I restart the computer, SDFix opens a window as soon as Windows is loaded. It closes very quickly so I can't see everything, but it says something about finishing?

What do I do now?

OK I see the sdfix element lets remove that and try another programme. My error on Java I meant 5 We will clear the account problem at the end unless it is causing problems


Please re-open HiJackThis and scan. Check the boxes next to all the entries listed below.

Now close all windows other than HiJackThis, then click Fix Checked. Close HiJackThis.

There was an error in removing MyWay Serarch Assistant......

Answers to your questions,

1. Yes, I can get into safe mode. I have tried and don't seem to have a problem now.
2. The McAfee was supposed to be removed and no longer shows on my system however, I have noticed remnants on the Hijackthis log. I will also want to get rid of Symantec when this is completed as it never picked up anything either. Avast would be my next choice.
3. I was able to delete the extra user, however, there are two Administrators showing under system user settings, titled DEBS\Administrator and DEBS\Deb, both are labeled administrators. The only difference I see is that the file sizes, one 50.2mg and 1.17kb, respectively.
4. The system seems to be doing ok but I think that the Comodo and AVG are having issues. Start up is very long and I can see from the defense log that Comodo is blocking some things. I probably need to get some help on configuration for this firewall. Doing a search on the site didn't bring much help.

See it's not that hard is it The programmes you highlighted are legitimate

At the end of this post I will give instructions on the removal of Norton, McAfee and installation of Avast (The AV I use )

Now the best part of the day ----- Your log now appears clean

Double click OTMoveit once again and you should see a CleanUp! button, press that button, you may get prompted by your firewall that OTMoveit wants to contact the internet, allow this, a cleanup.txt will be downloaded, a message dialog will ask you if you want to proceed with the cleanup process, click Yes. This will delete all the tools you have downloaded plus itself


Now to get you off to a good start we will re-set your restore points so that all the bad stuff is gone for good. Then if you need to restore at some stage you will be clean. There are several ways to reset your your restore point but this is my method:

1. Select Start > All Programs > Accessories > System tools > System Restore.
2. On the dialogue box that appears select Create a Restore Point
3. Click NEXT
4. Enter a name e.g. Clean
5. Click CREATE

You now have a clean restore point, to get rid of the bad ones:

1. Select Start > All Programs > Accessories > System tools > Disk Cleanup.
2. In the Drop down box that appears select your main drive e.g. C
3. Click OK
4. The System will do some calculation and the display a dialogue box with TABS
5. Select the More Options Tab.
6. At the bottom will be a system restore box with a CLEANUP button click this
7. Accept the Warning and select OK again, the program will close and you are done



Now that you are clean, to help protect your computer in the future I recommend that you get the following free program:

• SpywareBlaster to help prevent spyware from installing in the first place.
• SuperAntispyware Run weekly to keep your system clean

It is critical to have both a firewall and anti virus to protect your system and to keep them updated.

REMOVAL OF MCAFEE AND NORTON

Two tools to download the first will be the McAfee and then Norton

Download both to your desktop then download Avast

Disconnect from the internet and the run first the McAfee tool and then the Norton you will need to reboot at the end of each tools run.
Then run ASWENG.exe from your desktop (this is the Avast installation file)

Click Next on the avast! Setup window and on the next window with the ReadMe File.
Now you will see the Legal Agreement, just click I agree, and then click Next to continue.

You will be prompted with Configuration window, make sure that you choose Typical configuration and then click Next. Click Next to the windows that will follow, when the installation will finish, you will be given an option to schedule a boot time scan, select No

Now you have to restart your machine, select Restart and then click Finish.

After you restart you will get a message about avast! it will give you the general "Hello and Thank you for choosing our Product." Also after you restart you will notice 2 new icons in the bottom right corner of the screen.

VERY IMPORTANT - after restarting, right click on the a in the taskbar and select Updating, then highlight and click Program.

You will get popup after its done updating. If avast! had to download anything for your computer you may get a message asking you to restart.

After you have updated avast! right click the small icon a in task bar and click Start Avast! AntiVirus

Click Program Registration and you will be taken to their website. Fill out the form and then check you e-mail. Once you get an e-mail from them (usually about 1 minute after submitting the form) copy and paste the serial they provided into the highlighted box. Then click ok.

After this, you will need to Schedule Boot-Time Scan with avast! Click on the little button placed up in the left corner, and select Schedule Boot-Time Scan. Read also this tutorial HERE it may make it easier to you to follow the steps.

Next, choose

• Scan all local disks
• scan archive files
• click on Schedule

On the next dialog Operating system restart needed select Yes
Now avast! will restart your computer and start to scan before Windows fully loads.

IMPORTANT NOTE since your system had infections on it, avast! may detect some stray files it will give you dialog box with recommended actions, and options, please make sure if this happens, to click the Move to Chest button, and not to delete any reported files.

Unfortunately I know very little about Commodo firewall but if you have any questions I will try to resolve them

My apologies for taking so long to reply, however there were other obligations that needed my attention.

Everything went well until I got to the Boot Scan on Avast. When it came to the art to click on the Move to Chest button, there seemed to me some text that I could not see. I hit the down arrow to make sure that I didn't miss anything and it deleted the file. Unfortunately, not expecting this to happen, I did not write down the file name but it contained something like System file infected with CTX. Just for good measure, I ran the boot scan again and it did find additional files that I moved to Chest.

Spywarebaster will not run. It gets the following error: Failed to execute target process (Error code 5). SuperAntiSpyware ran fine and was able to remove those MyWay Search files among a long list of cookies.

I had an idea about the Comodo. Since the system was infected when it was installed, do you think it would be advantageous to uninstall it and reinstall now that it's clean? It seems to have quarantined some files that are associated with my ISP along with some others that I'm not sure of. It also blocks several files at startup associaed with AVG antispyware. There may be another way to have it start over to retrain but I'm not sure how to do that.

Except for these few things, my system is running perfectly! No popups, strange messages or anything not in the norm.

No problems real life is like that

Ref Comodo I have just downloaded and installed it, and I would recommend that you uninstal and then re-install the latest version. Once you have done that set it to learning mode. For the first few hours you will get popups as the programme determines which files you want to have access

Ref spywareblaster uninstall - reboot and then install before you run any other programme

Ref Avast - right click the @ and start the programme then right click anywhere on the interface and select Virus chest That will show you which files are in the chest
