Hello, I write about my wife's PC and is a separate issue from another post I have currently running regarding my own PC.

I need someone to help me find out what is causing my wife's PC to not cooperate in the way it should be.

Some info regarding it first (from Dell Order summary):

It is a Dell Dimension 3100 purchased in early April 2006. It has Windows XP Home SP2 with all Microsoft Updates installed. HDD is 80GB, memory is 256MB Single Channel DDR 400Mhz, processor Intel Celeron D Processor 351 (3.20GHz, 533FSB, 256Kb Cache).

Currently HDD free space: 54.4GB out of 71.4GB.

It is connected to Broadband Internet (Virgin Media) and the following antivirus/spyware programs installed:

Norton Internet Security 2006 (current and up to date subscription)
Spybot-Search And Destroy 1.5.2 (recent updated version)
Spyware Doctor free program version 5.1.0.272 (updates automatically)
Ad Aware 2007 free program (used to find malware/adware)

The symptoms:
On bootup, it takes forever to complete a bootup due to the hard drive constantly churning. Sometimes 20-30mins after PC switched on, the hard drive is still making a noise as though PC is being used to its maximum capacity.
At times, opening any programs (ie Outlook Express), Windows Task Manager, Windows Media Player etc takes a long time and the hard drive just keeps on sounding as it is doing something but no results being seen on screen.
Opening Windows Task Manager when no programs are open can reveal some 50 or so processes running and CPU usage is sometimes hitting 100% and PF usage can also be high (not sure if this means something).
Programs refuse to close and trying to end task them via CTRL-ALT-DEL does bring up task manager but trying to end task them refuses to respond.

I have installed ATF Cleaner and just ran it and it cleaned 168MBs.

I would welcome help to hopefully find the root of the problem and resolve it. Thanks.

Here is the hijackthislog.

Hey manford7,
Sorry for the delay in someone getting to your problem :)

My name is Harry and we will try to sort this out for you. Since its been a while from your original post, please do the following:

Re-run Hijack and post a fresh log. Then run this:
Please download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware from Here or Here

Double Click mbam-setup.exe to install the application.
  • Make sure a checkmark is placed next to Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, then click Finish.
  • If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
  • Once the program has loaded, select "Perform Quick Scan", then click Scan.
  • The scan may take some time to finish,so please be patient.
  • When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
  • Make sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
  • When disinfection is completed, a log will open in Notepad and you may be prompted to Restart.(See Extra Note)
  • The log is automatically saved by MBAM and can be viewed by clicking the Logs tab in MBAM.
  • Copy&Paste the entire report in your next reply.
Extra Note:
If MBAM encounters a file that is difficult to remove, you will be presented with 1 of 2 prompts, click OK to either and let MBAM proceed with the disinfection process,if asked to restart the computer, please do so immediatly.

Post the logs, I'll take a look :)

Harry

Hi, ran Malware Bytes, found 0 infections. log posted below.

Observation: When I tried to post a reply after scan completed, IE7 just froze and hang and stayed there. It refused to close using red X close box at top right corner. :) I had to close it via Windows Task Manager and end program. Then reopen IE7 and get back to here to add reply. Seems to be a too common occurrence with this PC. Maybe this observation may assist you. :)

I await your next advice.

Thanks.

Ok Andy, lets run this:

Download ComboFix from one of the locations below, and save it to your Desktop.

Link 1
Link 2
Link 3

Double click combofix.exe and follow the prompts. Please, never rename Combofix unless instructed.
When finished, it shall produce a log for you. Post that log and a HiJackthis log in your next reply
Note: Do not mouseclick combofix's window while its running. That may cause it to stall

Harry. I dowloaded ComboFix from the first link and when it started to run I got some really weird things happening. So I aborted.

Spyware Doctor detected a malicious attempt and from its history log here are the messages that popped up when the program made 4 attempts:
3/19/2008 20:22:20:500 OnGuard: System Event Blocked
Threat Name - Trojan-PWS.Bancos
Details - Spyware Doctor has blocked an application attempting to access a file.
Risk Level - High
Infection - C:\COMBOFIX\PV.CFEXE

3/19/2008 20:22:48:218 OnGuard: System Event Blocked
Threat Name - Trojan-PWS.Bancos
Details - Spyware Doctor has blocked an application attempting to access a file.
Risk Level - High
Infection - C:\COMBOFIX\PV.CFEXE

3/19/2008 20:23:08:265 OnGuard: System Event Blocked
Threat Name - Trojan-PWS.Bancos
Details - Spyware Doctor has blocked an application attempting to access a file.
Risk Level - High
Infection - C:\COMBOFIX\PV.CFEXE

3/19/2008 20:23:41:156 OnGuard: System Event Blocked
Threat Name - Trojan-PWS.Bancos
Details - Spyware Doctor has blocked an application attempting to access a file.
Risk Level - High
Infection - C:\COMBOFIX\PV.CFEXE

Spybot also detected an important registry change and requested user action-I denied it.

Also when the MSDOS window opened for ComboFix it brought up that screen where it says Windows does not know which program to open the file it was trying to open-looking in the C:/ComboFix folder it was a file called pv.cfexe which was trying to run. Interestingly, it is also the same file reported by Spyware Doctor as malicious. It provided the usual 2 options-choose from a list or search the net. As this window was coming up so were the Spyware Doctor and Spybot warnings.

I closed all down after the 4 malicious Spyware Doctor attempt warnings.

I read up on the trojan named above and is as follows:

Troj/Bancos-Z is an Internet banking Trojan which attempts to capture confidential banking information and send it to a remote location.

Troj/Bancos-Z captures and logs text within certain Microsoft Internet Explorer frames.

The installation executable for Troj/Bancos-Z is a RAR self-extracting archive which drops tsknet.exe (the main Troj/Bancos-Z executable) to the Windows or system32 folder with the hidden and system attributes set and runs it (if this folder does not exists it will be created).

tsknet.exe adds its pathname to the following new registry entries to run itself on startup:

HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run\tsknet
HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\RunServices\tsknet

Various new registry entries are also created under:

HKCU\Software\Applications\tsknet\

Now, I dont understand why this happpened, as I have another log on the go about my own PC and Combofix worked.
http://www.geekstogo...ms-t188874.html

In the log for my own PC, staff member thunderbird1988 is assisting me and some 3 weeks ago I downloaded and installed ComboFix on my PC with none of the above happening. However, I did get problems afterwards with Norton which only today has been resolved by Symantec. On my PC Combofix did find and remove a lot of the files that just looked suspect to me and were indeed malware.

I can only think the source of the link or progam has an infection? Why did this happen and is the PV.CFEXE file meant to be included with Combofix?

Please advise. Thanks.

Hey manford7,
Some of the problem might be right here, I missed it earlier :)

Norton Internet Security 2006 (current and up to date subscription)
Spybot-Search And Destroy 1.5.2 (recent updated version)
Spyware Doctor free program version 5.1.0.272 (updates automatically)
Ad Aware 2007 free program (used to find malware/adware)

With Norton installed, Spyware Doctor might be fighting against it. Norton is a very large program that uses quite a bit of your available resourses. Add another program on top of that, and the machine gets real unhappy.

Anti-Virus programs take up an enormous amount of your computer's resources when they are actively scanning your computer. Having two anti-virus programs running at the same time can cause your computer to run very slow, become unstable and even, in rare cases, crash.

If you choose to install more than one Anti-Virus program on your computer, then only one of them should be active in memory at a time.

There are basically two types of these programs:
On-Access and On-Demand

On-Access Scanners
As the name implies, are scanners that run in the background all the time the PC is turned on and running. The main function of an On-Access scanner is to monitor activity on your machine.

On-Demand Scanners
As the name implies, are scanners that only run when you ask them to.
Such as:
Online Scans and scanners that run on your machine but are not actively scanning your machine.

I think we need to try running the machine with just Norton running, if the other three were download as free versions you might want to remove them for now. If they are paid versions let me know before removal.

Let me know the results :)

Hi Harry,

I have learnt through problems on my own PC and also read in forums (maybe even in Geekstogo, cant remember), it is not a good idea to run 2 antivirus programs as they can battle with each other. Found this with Windows Defender and Norton-Norton logs reported it was blocking some things Windows Defender was doing. I think a similar thing is happening between Norton and Spyware Doctor.

However, I did not think there 2 antivirus programs on the affected (wife's) PC.

Concerning these ones:
Spybot-Search And Destroy 1.5.2 (recent updated version)
Spyware Doctor free program version 5.1.0.272 (updates automatically)
Ad Aware 2007 free program (used to find malware/adware)

I thought these were mainly spyware and malware guard and removal programs. All 3 are free versions. Only Norton is a paid subscription.

Which one of above 3 is also antivirus?

Spybot has been on the affected machine since late Dec 2006. Machine was new in July 2005 and Norton on there since then though has been uninstalled, reinstalled and uprgaded since for various reasons.

Spybot was put on because the version of Norton we had (Norton Internet Security) was not picking up some adware/trojans which Spybot then found. At the time my experience was Symnantec was more concerned with viruses but lately in last year it has been catching up to fight adware and malware which have become far bigger threats now.

Only in the last few weeks I put on Spyware Doctor and Ad Aware to see if that found something as the PC has been progressively getting worse as months go by. AdAware did find 2 critical malware/hijack attempts and 35 tracking cookies which Spybot and Norton did not-all removed. Since then, I have been blocking any cookies which look like advertising cookies.

Running these programs over last few weeks has returned clean scans so I am finding nothing with the above spyware/malware programs, Norton and also Microsoft's Malicious Software Removal Tool. But its performance is just slow etc.

The affected PC has 256MB of Ram. My own PC has 512 and I have had Norton 360 (latest All in One program) and Spybot together and not experienced the slowness on affected PC. Also our laptop has 512Mb with Norton Int Security package and Spybot on them and that machine works wonders.

On affected PC, Norton subscription is due for renewal in 10 days or so and like mine last November I think it will recommend upgrade to Norton 360 which has better all in one protection and more adware/spyware prevention than Norton Intenet Security-AntiVirus-AntiSpam programs.

So I am thinking once upgraded to Norton 360 full package, just deinstall Spybot, Spyware Doctor and Ad Aware.

My only concern with not having Spybot or similar is if something gets through that Norton does not know of?

Maybe the PC will run better then with just Norton. I think its problem is for all these programs 256MB is not enough. I found it interesting you mentioned memory in your last entry as memory size is also something that has occurred to me for some time and I regret not buying affected PC with 512 now instead of 256 but we did not appreciate what it would get used for which is watching/downloading a lot of online video/DVDs, online chat, email, MS Office which I am guessing can be memory intensive.

Another 2 thoughts I have had are:

1. All the addons in IE7-a lot of them, I am not even sure what half of them are or do? I know this can also be a way to install malicious software.
2. Sometimes the affected PC is running 56 processes or similar number. My own faster PC with 512MB never really goes above 41 and works far better (though laptop is 54 and stll works fine). So what are all the extra processes. If anything I do far more things on my PC but are probably using programs that are not constantly running.

Is there a way to verify what these are?

In summary:

1. Can you confirm what is the second Antivirus program in addition to Norton. is that Spyware Doctor?
2. Would you agree in my thoiughts to upgrade Norton during renewal and deinstall the other 3 Spyware/adware programs?
3. Can you advise re the IE7 addons and number of running programs issues I have mentioned.

Thanks again,
Andy.

Hey Andy,
None of the programs I listed are A/V's, I use that speech (its saved) for your information about on-access scanners which I believe Spyware Doctor is. What this means is its running alongside Norton, scanning away.

I am not a big fan of Symantec products, so therefore I have none loaded here. Normally I would try to duplicate the problem you are having to create a way to work around it. Looking at your log it seeems that these four programs constitute most of the entries.

The Bancos trojan has been around since 2004, and is detected by every A/V out there I think. Why Spyware Doctor is flagging Combofix as this trojan is unknown to me. I am going to inquire into that.

Lets take a look at that machine in a different way:
Download OTScanIt.exe to your Desktop and double-click on it to extract the files. It will create a folder named OTScanIt on your desktop.
  • Close any open browsers.
  • If your Real protection or Antivirus intervenes with OTScanIt, allow it to run.
  • Open the OTScanit folder and double-click on OTScanit.exe to start the program.
  • Now click the Run Scan button on the toolbar.
  • The program will be scanning huge amounts of data so depending on your system it could take a long time to complete. Let it run unhindered until it finishes.
  • When the scan is complete Notepad will open with the report file loaded in it.
  • Save that notepad file
If the log is too large to post, use the Reply button, scroll down to the attachments section and attach the notepad file here.

See if that will run, you may have to disable tea-timer and more to allow it to work.
Once I get the results from that I will give it a look-over.

Hey manford7

Sorry for the delay, I had to do a bit of research into this problem. I reviewed your last log, and nothing shows as a problem there.
I did contact the expert that created ComboFix, and it seems that it is not a problem with the program but a conflict with the protection programs on your machine. There is nothing wrong with what you have running, but in order to run ComboFix you will have to disable all of your protection programs on a temporary basis. The correct method to do this would be to disconnect from the internet, disable programs then run the tool. If you wish to do this, please install the recovery console as instructed below.

Go to Microsoft's website => http://support.microsoft.com/kb/310994
Select the download that's appropriate for your Operating System.

Download the file & save it as it's originally named, next to ComboFix.exe.

Now close all open windows and programs, then drag the setup package onto ComboFix.exe and drop it. Follow the prompts to start ComboFix and when prompted, agree to the End-User License Agreement to install the Microsoft Recovery Console. When complete, a log named CF_RC.txt will open. Please post the contents of that log.

Please do not reboot your machine until we have reviewed the log.

If you decide not to run the tool, please let me know. Either way, post a fresh HJT log please.

Hello,

Well Harry I have been very busy with this PC-spent hours and hours on it and have now got it to a far better state than it was. I did not like the Combofix idea at all so have decided not to go ahead with that-thanks for looking into it though.

I decided to take a look at what the PC was running always and runnning at startup. Here in order is what I have done.

1. Deleted Combo fix program and associated folders (where created) from previous attempt.
2. Deleted OTScanIt program and associated folders (where created).
3. Deinstalled Google Toolbar for IE. (not used).
4. Deinstalled MalwareBytes program and deleted associated folders (where not removed by uninstallation).
5. Deinstalled Spyware Doctor and deleted associated folders (where not removed by uninstallation).
6. Deinstalled TaxCut06 and DeductionPro06 (US tax programs not used anymore) and deleted associated folders (where not removed by uninstallation).
7. Uninstalled original program for Spybot as Control Panel Add/Remove Programs had two entries for Spybot.
8. Uninstalled Spybot update release 1.5.2. and deleted associated folders (where not removed by uninstallation).
9. Installed Uniblue Registry Booster 2.0 from http://www.liutiliti...paigns/plib/rb/. This discovered 441 registry entries but wanted payment to fix more than 15 so uninstalled it. I thought it was a free program, it was just a free scan.

I then looked at the startup programs and did some online research into each one and verified which ones were unnecessary to run at startup. I mainly used Google and BleepingComputer.com and typing each program name into google does come up with the very questions others ask also-what does this program do, is it necessary etc and answered in tech forums like this.

10. As part of this process I downloaded a free program callled Program Checker 1.5 from http://www.programch...ramchecker.aspx

This was mildly helpful to show what was running but did not recognize a lot of what a decent program should know (for example it did not recognize what explorer.exe was!!!)
Uninstalled it after not much help.

# I removed the following programs from the relevant run entry from registry editor that shows in "startup" tab under msconfig utility program. As confirmed by bleepingcomputer.com and some other technical forum links mentioned above, all run at startup and are are deemed as not necessary to run at startup and constantly run on any PC:
issch.exe - program to check for updates for Sonic Digital Media Plus V7. I scheduled this manually via Windows Scheduled Task Manager.
qttask.exe - program to run for Quicktime Player but not needed to run at startup.
igfxpers.exe - process info for Intel Common User Interface Module.
igfxtray.exe - process which allows you to access the Intel Graphics configuration and diagnostic application for the Intel 810 series graphics chipset.
isuspm.exe - progam to check for updates for InstallShield Update Manager (eg Dell/Sonic programs). I scheduled this manually via Windows Scheduled Task Manager.
DMXLauncher.exe - Dell Media Experience launch program but unncessary as only need when want to run it.
jusched.exe - process installed alongside Sun Microsystem's Java suite and checks for Java updates. I scheduled this manually via Windows Scheduled Task Manager.
MotiveSB.exe - NTL Broadband Medic internet problem diagnostic problem.

Again, I stress none are necessary to always run and/or run at startup and certainly none are Windows/system programs. In fact, most associated with software just run as and when.

Also deleted the following from Start All Programs StartUp folder as not necessary:

Adobe Reader Speed Launch
hpoddt01.exe - Hewlett Packard digital imaging software program-not sure why in start up as have same program on another 2 PCs and not there and not always running.

And continued to:
11. Deinstalled ABBY FineReader 6.0 Sprint program (never used).
12. Upgraded Norton Antivirus software to Norton 360 with subscription renewed.
13. Installed Spyware Blaster.
14. Reinstalled Spybot as new.

I later uninstalled Spyware Blaster in case it was causing a problem I cannot seem to fix which I will come to in a moment.

After doing all this the PC is running far healthier, so much faster and is protected by the latest Norton AntiVirus software and Spybot also. It boots up faster and now only has on average around 33 programs running. Before it was some 56 which for the 256Mb memory it has I conclude was too much.

Conclusion: there were far too many unnecessary programs always running therefore slowing down the PC. Also by getting rid of some programs no longer used helps a small bit to free up some disk space. I also think the latest Norton software works better with Spybot and Windows XP. :)

Now, Harry, one final thing is that my wife often was listening to AOL Internet Radio but for some reason I just cannot get it to complete its loading of a radio station and bring up sound.

AOL Internet Radio can be found here:
http://music.aol.com...pressRadio=true

We always used their older player as their newer player never seems to work on any PC we have and both are only a few years old. Hence, they keep the old player on their site!

Click on link http://radaol-prod-w...ml?stationid=-1
which is displayed as "Prefer the old player? Click here to launch the old AOL Radio"

This then brings up a second window and you then click "Listen NOW", let that load the list of stations and it should then load the relevant station selected. On 2 other PCs we have it works fine but on this one it just sticks on "Please wait while (name of station) is loading" and hangs there forever.

I have been in their help link and made sure their active X addon is enabled and downloaded their plugin again as suggested as well as clearing cache/cookies/temp int files etc and ensuring the relevant ActiveX prompts are set to the correct settings in IE Security settings (in fact same as default recommended settings) but no luck.

Have you any ideas to help get this working again?

By comparison, BBC Radio Player using Real Networks or Windows media Player and surfmusic.de (very good German int radio station site) using Windows Media Player both play live radio stations no problem. But not AOL.

Apart from that, the PC is far better than it was and back to its old self.

So if you can help with the AOL radio problem that would be great.

And do you know of a good free registry checker and fixer-just concerned that Uniblue program came up with 441 registry errors.

Thanks
Andy.

Hey Andy,
Yes you were a very busy person there, looks like you cleaned out a lot.

To answer some of your questions:
AOL Radio is something I have no experience with, so I could not venture a guess on that. You can take a look through the site in applications or programs, possibly ask in there.
As to a registry cleaner, I do not believe that it's a needed item. Mostly what that type of scanner finds is orphaned or empty reg entries. Examples are shown in your HJT log:
O2 - BHO: (no name) - {7E853D72-626A-48EC-A868-BA8D5E23E045} - (no file)
O2 - BHO: (no name) - {BDBD1DAD-C946-4A17-ADC1-64B5B4FF55D0} - (no file)

I have not tested any of the registry cleaners out there, if there is something I want to remove I remove it myself. As it is, I don't think you have anything to worry about, empty entries really don't slow things down, unless a program is looking for that line. If that were the case, you would know.

As I did not see anything in your OT log that indicates a malware problem, and you seem fairly proficient at looking things over (good job) I would like to close this thread :)
