Ive noticed in the past few days that webpages are loading slower than usual...sometimes they hang for a few seconds and then finish. Its not constantly but about every 2 minutes. I did an antivirus scan with avast and removed a few Trojan horses. I also used Spybot and Ad Aware. I then followed all the instructions posted for cleaning out your computer before doing a Hijack log. AVG wouldnt give me a report at the end but it said i was clean. SuperAntiSpy said i was clean. I couldnt use Panda Software because it kept giving me an error so i used Kaspersky instead. All clean as well there. I went to Microsoft and installed the .NET Framework 2.0 Service Pack1 that was missing. Still no changes.

Here's my HiJack This log:

Hi there sorry for the delay. Your log shows nothing apparent so I would like a deeper look

Please download Deckard's System Scanner (DSS) and save it to your Desktop.
  • Close all other windows before proceeding.
  • Double-click on dss.exe and follow the prompts.
  • When it has finished, dss will open two Notepads main.txt and extra.txt -- please copy (CTRL+A and then CTRL+C) and paste (CTRL+V) the contents of main.txt and extra.txt in your next reply.

Not a great deal evident there apart from 3 P2P programmes which may be eating up your bandwidth

BearShare
LimeWire
uTorrent

Lets secure the system first

Your Java is out of date. Older versions have vulnerabilities that malicious sites can use to infect your system. Please follow these steps to remove older version Java components and update:
  • Download the latest version of Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6 Update 5 and save it to your desktop.
  • Scroll down to where it says "JJava Runtime Environment (JRE) 6 Update 5...allows end-users to run Java applications".
  • Click the "Download" button to the right.
  • Read the License Agreement and then check the box that says: "Accept License Agreement". The page will refresh.
  • Click on the link to download Windows Offline Installation and save the file to your desktop.
  • Close any programs you may have running - especially your web browser.
  • Go to Start > Settings > Control Panel, double-click on Add/Remove Programs and remove all older versions of Java.
  • Check (highlight) any item with Java Runtime Environment (JRE or J2SE) in the name.
  • Click the Remove or Change/Remove button.
  • Repeat as many times as necessary to remove each Java versions.
  • Reboot your computer once all Java components are removed.
  • Then from your desktop double-click on jre-6u5-windows-i586-p.exe to install the newest version.

THEN

I will go for a real deep search
Download OTScanit to your Desktop and double-click on it to extract the files. It will create a folder named WinPFind35u on your desktop.
  • Close ALL OTHER PROGRAMS.
  • Open the OTScanit folder and double-click on OTScanit.exe to start the program.
  • Check the box that says Scan All User Accounts
  • Check the Radio buttons for Files/Folders Created Within 90 Days and Files/Folders Modified Within 90 Days
  • Under Additional Scans check the following:
    • File - Additional Folder Scans
    • File - Purity Scan
  • Now click the Run Scan button on the toolbar.
  • Let it run unhindered until it finishes.
  • When the scan is complete Notepad will open with the report file loaded in it.
  • Click the Format menu and make sure that Wordwrap is not checked. If it is then click on it to uncheck it.
Please attach the log in your next post.

To attach a file, do the following:
  • Click Add Reply
  • Under the reply panel is the Attachments Panel
  • Browse for the attachment file you want to upload, then click the green Upload button
  • Once it has uploaded, click the Manage Current Attachments drop down box
  • Click on Posted Image to insert the attachment into your post

Thanks for letting me know about Java. I never knew you should remove previous versions. As for the P2P programs I unistalled Limewire and Bearshare a while back because i wasnt using them. If there's still remnants of them on my system could you tell me how to remove them? I dont think they are an issue. I had all 3 installed for a long time without any problem.

Hi again not a lot there just a few repairs to run and the remnants of Limewire/bearshare to go. There was this warning on your system which may or may not be causing your problems - can you confirm your ethernet cable is connected OK

Broadcom 440x 10/100 Integrated Controller: The network link is down. Check to make sure the network cable is properly connected.

Start OTScanit. Copy/Paste the information in the quotebox below into the pane where it says "Paste fix here" and then click the Run Fix button.

[Registry - Non-Microsoft Only]
< Default Protocols [HKEY_USERS\.DEFAULT\] - Select to Repair > -> HKEY_USERS\.DEFAULT\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Internet Settings\ZoneMap\ProtocolDefaults
YN -> shell -> shell protocol not assigned
< Default Protocols [HKEY_USERS\S-1-5-18\] - Select to Repair > -> HKEY_USERS\S-1-5-18\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Internet Settings\ZoneMap\ProtocolDefaults
YN -> shell -> shell protocol not assigned
< Default Protocols [HKEY_USERS\S-1-5-19\] - Select to Repair > -> HKEY_USERS\S-1-5-19\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Internet Settings\ZoneMap\ProtocolDefaults
YN -> shell -> shell protocol not assigned
< Default Protocols [HKEY_USERS\S-1-5-20\] - Select to Repair > -> HKEY_USERS\S-1-5-20\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Internet Settings\ZoneMap\ProtocolDefaults
YN -> shell -> shell protocol not assigned
[Files Created - Additional Folder Scans - Non-Microsoft Only]
NY -> bearshare510.exe -> %UserProfile%\Desktop\bearshare510.exe
[Files Modified - Additional Folder Scans - Non-Microsoft Only]
NY -> LimeWire -> %AppData%\LimeWire
NY -> @Alternate Data Stream - 0 bytes -> %UserProfile%\My Documents\Thumbs.db:encryptable
NY -> bearshare510.exe -> %UserProfile%\Desktop\bearshare510.exe
[Empty Temp Folders]

The fix should only take a very short time. When the fix is completed a message box will popup telling you that it is finished. Click the Ok button and Notepad will open with a log of actions taken during the fix. Post that information back here along with a new Hijackthis log.

I will review the information when it comes back in.

THEN

Please download ATF Cleaner by Atribune.
This program is for XP and Windows 2000 onlyDouble-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
Under Main choose: Select All
Click the Empty Selected button.
If you use Firefox browserClick Firefox at the top and choose: Select All
Click the Empty Selected button.
NOTE: If you would like to keep your saved passwords, please click No at the prompt.
If you use Opera browserClick Opera at the top and choose: Select All
Click the Empty Selected button.
NOTE: If you would like to keep your saved passwords, please click No at the prompt.
Click Exit on the Main menu to close the program.
For Technical Support, double-click the e-mail address located at the bottom of each menu.

Also let me know of any problems you encountered performing the steps above or any continuing problems you are still having with the computer.

I see you appear to have Tuneup utilities - do you use it ?

Hi,

I ended up removing some of the extra Bearshare and limewire folders myself before you got a chance to respond back. Ethernet cable is okay. I didnt get a log right after I used OTScanit. OK lets try that next - the following is the 2008 version so it should still give you the 30 day trial

Download, install and run Tuneup Utilities 2008

Select Free up disk space

Select Unneccesary files and backups then clean

Select Maintain Windows

Run Drive Defrag

Run Tune Up registry clean up

Then run Reg Defrag, the screen will lose colour during the process which can take a few minutes and then needs a reboot

Those will have cleared the drive of obsolete software errors

These are suggestions for making the most of the free trial

Select Increase performance

Run the internet Optimiser to accelerate downloads, select the speed just above your actual connection speed, this requires a reboot.

After the reboot, click Increase performance then system optimizer to run system advisor.

Let me know how that goes and I will then see where we can go from there

OK so I do not think we are looking at malware now. So I will get that part out of the way and look at the download speeds etc...

Now the best part of the day ----- Your log now appears clean :)

Double click OTScanit once again and you should see a CleanUp! button, press that button, you may get prompted by your firewall that OTScanit wants to contact the internet, allow this, a cleanup.txt will be downloaded, a message dialog will ask you if you want to proceed with the cleanup process, click Yes. This will delete all the tools you have downloaded plus itself
http://download.blee...r/OTCleanIt.exe

Now to get you off to a good start we will re-set your restore points so that all the bad stuff is gone for good. Then if you need to restore at some stage you will be clean. There are several ways to reset your your restore point but this is my method:

1. Select Start > All Programs > Accessories > System tools > System Restore.
2. On the dialogue box that appears select Create a Restore Point
3. Click NEXT
4. Enter a name e.g. Clean
5. Click CREATE

You now have a clean restore point, to get rid of the bad ones:

1. Select Start > All Programs > Accessories > System tools > Disk Cleanup.
2. In the Drop down box that appears select your main drive e.g. C
3. Click OK
4. The System will do some calculation and the display a dialogue box with TABS
5. Select the More Options Tab.
6. At the bottom will be a system restore box with a CLEANUP button click this
7. Accept the Warning and select OK again, the program will close and you are done

Now that you are clean, to help protect your computer in the future I recommend that you get the following free program: It is critical to have both a firewall and anti virus to protect your system and to keep them updated.

To keep your operating system up to date visit

To learn more about how to protect yourself while on the internet read this article by Tony Klien: So how did I get infected in the first place?

Keep safe :)

OK now the system problem

First lets see if you get a constant speed

lets try the speakeasy speed test...here...try several servers and make note of the download speeds...
Then post them :)

Chicago - 2522 kbps down

Seattle - 2241

Dallas - 2515

New York City - 2472

Washington DC - 2480

I also noticed a few times today that when i visited several webpages the only thing that would appear was the text. Most of the background graphics werent there and it was just white. This happened when i was surfing and doing nothing else and also when i was downloading the updates from Microsoft. Would this be then a memory problem?

Well 1Gb of memory should be sufficient for XP. Would you bear with me on this whilst I do a bit of research or you could post in the network forum if you want more experienced help. At the moment I can see no reason for the slowdown

One suggestion I have found is to reboot your router - To do this switch the power off of the router for about one minute then plug it back in
