I’m experiencing several major problems with my laptop. Here’s some background:
Dell Inspiron 5100 laptop, about 5 years old
Running Windows XP Professional Version 2002, Service Pack 2
I recently (about 6 weeks ago) installed Trend Micro’s Security Suite, installed all of the Windows XP security updates that were available for my OS, and installed Service Pack 3 for Office 2002 (the latest available for the version I’m running – I needed this for an update that allowed SSP in Outlook).
Shortly after making all of these updates, my laptop began acting up. Here are the various problems:
1. Upon power-up, I hear a series of unusual beeps. I’ve checked into POST/BIOS info and can’t find anything I can use, because the series of beeps varies with each startup. I’ve run the full BIOS diagnostic and get no ‘fail’ results. The series is most commonly 3 beeps, followed by a short pause, followed by 10 beeps, followed by a short pause, followed by either 7 or 8 beeps (3-10-8 or 3-10-7). Another frequent series is 4-11-7. My first power-up this morning was 2-8, however.
2. The whole thing goes completely haywire sometimes, as if it is reacting to keystrokes that I’m not making. Applications will close by themselves, or it will switch between several applications that I have open at one time. Last night I was trying to forward an email, and all I had to do was type in an email address in the To: field. I kept getting the “Do you want to save changes” message, as if I had hit the ESC key to close the message (which I did not). After about 25 times, I finally gave up, managed to close Outlook, shut down the laptop, restart it, and resume what I was doing. I have to restart the computer about 6 times per day now, because of these problems. Sometimes, I can’t do a normal restart (Start/Turn Off Computer/Restart), because it won’t respond to the keystrokes that I *AM* giving it. In those cases I have to do a hard reboot.
3. When the computer is running fairly normally, it is running at record-setting slow speeds. I’ve checked for current processes to find the ones using the most CPU and determine which ones could be stopped and/or removed from startup. That made a minor difference, but I’m still very frustrated by the speed (lack thereof).
4. Thinking that some of the problems might be related to the recent updates/installations, I decided to try a System Restore. I discovered that somehow ALL restore points had been deleted, despite adequate space. Since that time, I have created several manual restore points (that are still there), but it is no longer automatically creating them as it did before.
I’ve run my own spyware/virus programs, and even some others (AVG) that I knew were good, free ones. Nothing seemed to help.
I found this site and followed all of the directions before running the HiJackThis program (with the exception of running the pandasoftware – I kept getting an error page). Here are the results of the HJT log, followed by the results of the other programs:
