I have had several problems in the past with my computer. I have done everything I can to remove and prevent these things from happeneing, but it seem at least twice a year I have to spend an entire night following instructions to fully remove my problem. Recently I had a run in with trojandownloader and something with vundo in it. In the past I also dealt with somthing called smitfraud.
I have a current subscription to Norton Anti-Virus. I also have a paid-for version of spyhunter, and the newest free version from ad-aware. After a lot of running scans and restarting, everything apears to be back to normal. I just really want to be sure this time. I am considering re-installing windows xp, just to start back with a clean slate. I have downloaded and ran the hijackthis program. I also followed the instructions and have pasted my add/remove programs list to me post. Please help me find any residual or hibernating-monster problems. I appreciate your help.

Hi joxaal

welcome to geekstogo :)

sorry to keep you waiting. lets do a deeper scan of your machine for me to analyse.

(if your problem has already been resolved, could you just let me know so that i an move onto other logs to help others, thanks)

Please download Deckard's System Scanner (DSS) and save it to your Desktop.
  • Close all other windows before proceeding.
  • Double-click on dss.exe and follow the prompts.
  • When it has finished, dss will open two Notepads main.txt and extra.txt -- please copy (CTRL+A and then CTRL+C) and paste (CTRL+V) the contents of main.txt and extra.txt in your next reply.

you may need to post the logs over 2 replies to ensure all the information is posted.

Ok here are the two logs. Thanks for your time. :)
You will notice the programs RegCure, Registry Booster 2, and REgistryFix, which I dowloaded free thinking they might help. They all ended up asking for money before doing anything so I haven't actually cleaned my registry. I suppose I will buy one of em, but I was hoping to find a free one :)

main.txt:

I am considering re-installing windows xp, just to start back with a clean slate

hopefully we can avoid that :)

You will notice the programs RegCure, Registry Booster 2, and REgistryFix, which I dowloaded free thinking they might help. They all ended up asking for money before doing anything so I haven't actually cleaned my registry. I suppose I will buy one of em, but I was hoping to find a free one

i dont think you will need them, to be honest.

in this post i want to do a scan (which i notice you have done before) - i suspect there is still more smitfraud type infection on your machine.

if you have downloaded this before, then please do so again, it will have been updated recently.

Please download SmitfraudFix (by S!Ri) to your Desktop.

Double-click SmitfraudFix.exe
Select option #1 - Search by typing 1 and press "Enter"; a text file will appear, which lists infected files (if present).
Please copy/paste the content of that report into your next reply.

**If the tool fails to launch from the Desktop, please move SmitfraudFix.exe directly to the root of the system drive (usually C:), and launch from there.

Note : process.exe is detected by some antivirus programs (AntiVir, Dr.Web, Kaspersky) as a "RiskTool"; it is not a virus, but a program used to stop system processes. Antivirus programs cannot distinguish between "good" and "malicious" use of such programs, therefore they may alert the user.

some remnants left.......

You should print out these instructions, or copy them to a NotePad file for reading while in Safe Mode, because you will not be able to connect to the Internet to read from this site.

Next, please reboot your computer in Safe Mode by doing the following :
  • Restart your computer
  • After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, tap the F8 key continually;
  • Instead of Windows loading as normal, a menu with options should appear;
  • Select the first option, to run Windows in Safe Mode, then press "Enter".
  • Choose your usual account.
Once in Safe Mode, double-click on SmitfraudFix.exe
Select option #2 - Clean by typing 2 and press "Enter" to delete infected files.

You will be prompted : "Registry cleaning - Do you want to clean the registry ?"; answer "Yes" by typing Y and press "Enter" in order to remove the Desktop background and clean registry keys associated with the infection.

The tool will now check if wininet.dll is infected. You may be prompted to replace the infected file (if found); answer "Yes" by typing Y and press "Enter".

The tool may need to restart your computer to finish the cleaning process; if it doesn't, please restart it into Normal Windows.
A text file will appear onscreen, with results from the cleaning process; please copy/paste the content of that report into your next reply.
The report can also be found at the root of the system drive, usually at C:\rapport.txt

Warning : running option #2 on a non infected computer will remove your Desktop background.

You asked me:
did you put this restriction in?
O6 - HKCU\Software\Policies\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Control Panel present

I'm not sure what you mean. If you are talking about something with hijackthis, I suppose the answer is no. About a week ago I tried following along with somone elses thread, but stopped half-way because it wasn't similar enough to my problem. I don't recall anything about putting restriction in anything.

Did the hijackthis scan and fixed the three objects you mentioned.

When running the OTMoveIt2.exe process, I encountered a problem. I copied all the text information into the appropriate windows as you instructed. Next, after I started to run the program, many error messages came up. All of them had the same format with slightly different names attached. Here is an example

OTMoveIt2: OTMoveIt2.exe - Bad Image
The application or DLL C:\Windows\browserad.dll is not a valid windows image. Please check this against your installation diskette.

I pressed Ok to all of them (I had no other choices). After that OTMoveIt2.exe stopped responding.

This is where I stopped. Should I run it again? Move to the next step?

Thanks

Ignore the last thread I realized that when I copied the text into the MoveIt.exe windows, I had some extra text that shouldn't have been there. I re-ran it and it went smooth. Moving on to step 2. I will post those logs soon.

Thanks

looking better now. in this post we will clear away that item and do a couple of last scans to see if anything else is lurking on your machine. we will also update your java.

the scans will likely take 2 hours, quite possibly much longer. so just let them run.

I just thought I might mention that I have previously used programs like kaaza, limewire, and bit torrent. I haven't used them for a long time now, and I have them unistalled and deleted but somehow they keep showing up in logs.

they seem to show up as approved programs for your firewall. therefore, you should go into your norton firewall and just take them off the approved list. if push comes to shove, we can do it manually by directly changing some parts of your Registry.

====STEP 1====
Please re-open HiJackThis and scan. Check the boxes next to all the entries listed below.

O6 - HKCU\Software\Policies\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Control Panel present

Now close all windows other than HiJackThis, then click Fix Checked. Close HiJackThis.

====STEP 2====
Please download ATF Cleaner by Atribune.
This program is for XP and Windows 2000 onlyDouble-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
Under Main choose: Select All
Click the Empty Selected button.
If you use Firefox browserClick Firefox at the top and choose: Select All
Click the Empty Selected button.
NOTE: If you would like to keep your saved passwords, please click No at the prompt.
If you use Opera browserClick Opera at the top and choose: Select All
Click the Empty Selected button.
NOTE: If you would like to keep your saved passwords, please click No at the prompt.
Click Exit on the Main menu to close the program.
For Technical Support, double-click the e-mail address located at the bottom of each menu.

====STEP 3====
Download and scan with SUPERAntiSpyware Free for Home Users
  • Double-click SUPERAntiSpyware.exe and use the default settings for installation.
  • An icon will be created on your desktop. Double-click that icon to launch the program.
  • If asked to update the program definitions, click "Yes". If not, update the definitions before scanning by selecting "Check for Updates". (If you encounter any problems while downloading the updates, manually download and unzip them from here.)
  • Under "Configuration and Preferences", click the Preferences button.
  • Click the Scanning Control tab.
  • Under Scanner Options make sure the following are checked (leave all others unchecked):
    • Close browsers before scanning.
    • Scan for tracking cookies.
    • Terminate memory threats before quarantining.
  • Click the "Close" button to leave the control center screen.
  • Back on the main screen, under "Scan for Harmful Software" click Scan your computer.
  • On the left, make sure you check C:\Fixed Drive.
  • On the right, under "Complete Scan", choose Perform Complete Scan.
  • Click "Next" to start the scan. Please be patient while it scans your computer.
  • After the scan is complete, a Scan Summary box will appear with potentially harmful items that were detected. Click "OK".
  • Make sure everything has a checkmark next to it and click "Next".
  • A notification will appear that "Quarantine and Removal is Complete". Click "OK" and then click the "Finish" button to return to the main menu.
  • If asked if you want to reboot, click "Yes".
  • To retrieve the removal information after reboot, launch SUPERAntispyware again.
    • Click Preferences, then click the Statistics/Logs tab.
    • Under Scanner Logs, double-click SUPERAntiSpyware Scan Log.
    • If there are several logs, click the current dated log and press View log. A text file will open in your default text editor.

  • It will say "Java Plug-in" under the icon.
Please find the update button or tab in the Java Control Panel. Update your Java then reboot.
  • If you are unable to update you can manually update by going here:
  • After the reboot, go back into the Control Panel and double-click the Java Icon.
  • Under Temporary Internet Files, click the Delete Files button.
  • There are three options in the window to clear the cache - Leave ALL 3 Checked

Ok so my computer is running ok. I took out Limewire, Kaaza, Bittorrent, from my approved programs list on windows firewall like you suggested.
I have a question about that actually. When I have windows firewall activated, a Norton Internet Security pop-up comes saying it recomends that windows firewall stay off. It prefers to work alone i suppose, but couldn't I keep both on?
Also, during that last run, a message from norton alerted me that it had succesfully blocked something called Trojan.Fakeavalert. It's good that it was blocked, but I don't get how the attack was even attempted. Are there just hordes of viruses riding the internet looking for PC's to infiltrate? I mean, the only window I had up was SuperAntiSpyware, which was running, and suddenly some trojan tries to get into my computer. I wasn't downloading or surfing the internet or anything. Is this normal?
Lastly, in one of your earlier posts you mentioned something called process.exe. It's sort of a substitue for the task manager. Do you recomend using that for day to day process monitoring?

That was going to be the end of my post but then I thought of something else. I'm not sure if this is something you will know how to handle or not. When restarting my computer, a few different error messages come up. They don't come up everytime, but if my computer has been on for a long time they're sure to come up. When turning off, the first thing to come up has to do with something called ccApp.exe. It just says there was an application error. I looked it up on the internet but I couldn't really figure out how to stop it. After my username is logged off and the computer is close to shutting down, another error message pops up briefly. I haven't been able to write the whole thing down yet, but it says something about ccSvchost.exe. Lastly, when loggin back in on start up, an error comes up saying ATI video bios poller client: Ati2evxx.exe - Application Error. Not sure about it.

Ok so that sums it up for me. Thanks so much for the help. I'm definatly going to be donating something at the end of this. :)

the kaspersky scan picked up mostly safely quarantined files, but it did pick up one infected file which we will clear now. we will also do another full DSS scan as a final check.

best to have only one firewall in operation, and i would advise going with the norton firewall, it is better than the windows firewall.

it may have just been the SUPERantispyware running and tripping over an infection. but we will do a full Deckard System Scan to see if it is there.

Lastly, in one of your earlier posts you mentioned something called process.exe. It's sort of a substitue for the task manager. Do you recomend using that for day to day process monitoring?

the process.exe that i was refering to was a file linked to smitfraudfix, and not the one you are referring to. the file name process.exe is reasonably common, could you give me the full path of your process.exe (i.e. C:/windows/etc/etc/process.exe)

these are both related to your norton (and, to be honest happens to me at times also) and are quite common problems apparently. it is not mawlare related :) other than trying liveupdate i dont really have a solution for your here other than posting in the Applications part of this forum once we have cleaned your machine.

Lastly, when loggin back in on start up, an error comes up saying ATI video bios poller client: Ati2evxx.exe - Application Error. Not sure about it.

fortunately that is not malware. unfortunately it is beyond my knowledge. once we have cleaned your machine you should post that issue in the Applicationspart of this forum.

====STEP 1====
Please double-click OTMoveIt2.exe to run it. (Vista users, please right click on OTMoveit2.exe and select "Run as an Administrator")
  • Copy the file paths below to the clipboard by highlighting ALL of them and pressing CTRL + C (or, after highlighting, right-click and choose Copy):

    C:\Documents and Settings\joxaal\Desktop\jt\crap\setup_ares.exe
  • Return to OTMoveIt2, right click in the "Paste List of Files/Folders to be Moved" window (under the light blue bar) and choose Paste.
  • Click the red Moveit! button.
  • A log of files and folders moved will be created in the c:\_OTMoveIt\MovedFiles folder in the form of Date and Time (mmddyyyy_hhmmss.log). Please open this log in Notepad and post its contents in your next reply.
  • Close OTMoveIt2
If a file or folder cannot be moved immediately you may be asked to reboot the machine to finish the move process. If you are asked to reboot the machine choose Yes.

====STEP 2====
click on Start, click on Run
copy and paste the following in bold in the open window and then click OK
"%userprofile%\desktop\dss.exe" /config
This will open up DSS configuration
click on Check All
click Scan
DSS will now run again when finished
Please post back both logs that open in notepad
Main txt and extra txt

In your next reply could i see:
1. the OTMoveIT log
2. the 2 DSS logs
3. any news of any further trojan warnings

there will be a lot of information to post in the next reply, therefore you may need to post the information over more than one reply to ensure it is all posted.
