I'm not sure how long the problem has existed, but it came to my attention nearly a week ago that I may have a problem with cmd.exe when XP stopped running all of my old DOS games (that i've been playing for years on the same machine). When I attempt to start a game normally the DOS prompt window opens up to a black screen with no sound or picture and i'm forced to close it by way of Task Manager. I've also tried opening Command Prompt and running the programs manually, each time resulting in an error message: "program.exe is not recognized as an internal or external command, operable program or batch file". I've looked high and low for an answer to this riddle, and would greatly appreciate any help.

Thank U,

Hello Shavie...

Do you get the same type of error when you try to open the command session (Start > Run > cmd)?

Navigate to C:\Windows\system32. In the System32 folder, see if you can find the cmd.exe icon. Also look to see if you have cmd.com or cmd32.exe in the folder. Let me know what you find.
