Please help!!!

My computer has become slower than a turtle. I ran a Symantec scan last week and it found Vomba and Downloader. I have AVG antivirus installed but it did not find these as problems.

I have gone through all of the steps you recommend prior to submitting my HJT log. I was not able to get all of the Microsoft updates installed. It worked for hours but they never would install. AVG antispyware found 4 problems. For some reason I could not save the report. It shows Adware.Zango and 180solutions in my quarantine. Superantispyware came back clean.

Following is my panda activescan log.

Hi there sorry for the delay :)

While TeaTimer is an excellent tool for the prevention of spyware, it can sometimes prevent HijackThis from fixing certain things.
Please disable TeaTimer for now until you are clean. TeaTimer can be re-activated once your HijackThis log is clean.

  • Open Spybot Search & Destroy.
  • In the Mode menu click "Advanced mode" if not already selected.
  • Choose "Yes" at the Warning prompt.
  • Expand the "Tools" menu.
  • Click "Resident".
  • Uncheck the "Resident "TeaTimer" (Protection of overall system settings) active." box.
  • In the File menu click "Exit" to exit Spybot Search & Destroy.

To begin

Download and save to your desktop OTCleanit we will use this later

Please re-open HiJackThis and scan. Check the boxes next to all the entries listed below.

R3 - URLSearchHook: (no name) - {44A82E41-C6DB-9D08-A141-EF2B53C8879B} - C:\WINDOWS\system32\miwajh.dll (file missing)

Now close all windows other than HiJackThis, then click Fix Checked. Close HiJackThis.

FINALLY FOR NOW

Please download ComboFix from Here or Here to your Desktop.

  • Please, never rename Combofix unless instructed.
  • Close any open browsers.
  • Close/disable all anti virus and anti malware programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix.

    -----------------------------------------------------------

    • Very Important! Temporarily disable your anti-virus, script blocking and any anti-malware real-time protection before performing a scan. They can interfere with ComboFix or remove some of its embedded files which may cause "unpredictable results".
    • Click on this link to see a list of programs that should be disabled. The list is not all inclusive. If yours is not listed and you don't know how to disable it, please ask.

      -----------------------------------------------------------

    • Close any open browsers.
    • WARNING: Combofix will disconnect your machine from the Internet as soon as it starts
    • Please do not attempt to re-connect your machine back to the Internet until Combofix has completely finished.
    • If there is no internet connection after running Combofix, then restart your computer to restore back your connection.

    -----------------------------------------------------------

  • Double click on combofix.exe & follow the prompts.
  • When finished, it will produce a report for you.
  • Please post the "C:\ComboFix.txt" along with a new HijackThis log for further review.
**Note: Do not mouseclick combofix's window while it's running. That may cause it to stall**

Two more to go :) How is your computer running now ?

Please re-open HiJackThis and scan. Check the boxes next to all the entries listed below.

Computer does seem to be quite a bit faster. :) It is definitely faster at start up. It was taking 15-20 minutes to get started up and connected to the internet. Internet explorer seems to be going faster now also. I still had my AVG anitvirus disabled. I just restarted it and tried to update it but I get an error message now. It says it is probably corrupt and needs to be downloaded again. I received this same message about a week ago and had reloaded it then. Any ideas what would be causing that to happen? :) I am still having trouble getting my windows updates to take. This happened several months ago and I think I turned something off at the time so it would quit trying to install them. All of the updates appear to be Microsoft Office related. I don't know what I need to do about those. I just turned TeaTimer back on. Is this a program you would recommend keeping? I feel like that is all I have installed on my computer anymore. AVG Anti Spyware, Spybot, Ad-Aware - is that too many?

Let me know what you think about these few issues because I definitely value your opinion. You have been such a great help and so easy to understand.

I don't know if you need it or not but here is another HJT log.

I hope this is okay but I ran Malwarebytes again to see if it came back clean. It found 8 infected files again. Are these new infected files or the same ones it found last time?

MBAM just found some orphan registry entries which is good :)

If for some reason AVG fails to take again let me know, but uninstall your current copy before installing the new

I am still having trouble getting my windows updates to take. This happened several months ago and I think I turned something off at the time so it would quit trying to install them. All of the updates appear to be Microsoft Office related. I don't know what I need to do about those.

What error messages are you getting and do you have office installed ?

I just turned TeaTimer back on. Is this a program you would recommend keeping? I feel like that is all I have installed on my computer anymore. AVG Anti Spyware, Spybot, Ad-Aware - is that too many?

Personally I just have Superantispyware and Spywareblaster. They appear sufficient for my needs. However, the choice is yours

Now the best part of the day ----- Your log now appears clean :)

Double click OTMoveIt once again and you should see a CleanUp! button, press that button, you may get prompted by your firewall that OTMoveIt wants to contact the internet, allow this, a cleanup.txt will be downloaded, a message dialog will ask you if you want to proceed with the cleanup process, click Yes. This will delete all the tools you have downloaded plus itself. MBAM can be removed via Add/Remove in control panel

Now to get you off to a good start we will re-set your restore points so that all the bad stuff is gone for good. Then if you need to restore at some stage you will be clean. There are several ways to reset your your restore point but this is my method:

1. Select Start > All Programs > Accessories > System tools > System Restore.
2. On the dialogue box that appears select Create a Restore Point
3. Click NEXT
4. Enter a name e.g. Clean
5. Click CREATE

You now have a clean restore point, to get rid of the bad ones:

1. Select Start > All Programs > Accessories > System tools > Disk Cleanup.
2. In the Drop down box that appears select your main drive e.g. C
3. Click OK
4. The System will do some calculation and the display a dialogue box with TABS
5. Select the More Options Tab.
6. At the bottom will be a system restore box with a CLEANUP button click this
7. Accept the Warning and select OK again, the program will close and you are done

Now that you are clean, to help protect your computer in the future I recommend that you get the following free program: It is critical to have both a firewall and anti virus to protect your system and to keep them updated.

To keep your operating system up to date visit

ok, I went ahead and removed spybot, avg antivirus, and adaware and went with the programs you recommended. When I installed avast and did the initial scan it found infected files. win32:ad-gen was found in two files and then it found them in system restore also. I chose the delete option. Do I need to do another restore point and clear the old ones again?

Why does it seem like every program I run, something different is found? Is my computer really that infected or is this pretty normal?

SuperAnitSpyware keeps popping up in the right hand corner that there is an update. Whenever I tell it to download and install updates now it goes to the application update wizard and the box where available updates show is blank. My options are back, next or cancel. Back and next are greyed out so all I can do is cancel. I have left it there for at least 15 minutes thinking it was just slow but it never changes. I went into SuperAntiSpyware and had it check for updates. I thought it installed new updates. As soon as I got done the same box popped up in the right hand corner.

In case I haven't told you lately - THANK YOU for all of the help you are giving me.

Each programme be it Antispy or Antivirus has it strong and weak points - so in a way they compliment each other. But nothing is 100% accurate. I don't understand the problem with SAS, could you start the programme and on the bottom right there will be the version number - can you let me know what it is

Reset your system restore points again

THEN

Right click the Avast icon and select Avast log viewer
Select the Warning section
Copy and paste the contents

SAS is Version 3.6.1000 - definition database version is core: 3423 - trace: 1415. If I click on Check for Updates it goes out and checks and tells me they are up to date. I still have the message in the bottom right telling me updates are available. I have the option to Download and Install Updates now or Continue what I was doing and download later. I have tried both options but it seems to keep coming back.

I do not see anything in my avast! Log Viewer. The infections it found were right after I installed avast it had me reboot and it did a scan before the computer ever came back up. Would that be why it is not in the log?

Computer seems to be moving pretty slow again today. Starting to wonder if it is hardware instead of malware. How do you know?

Before we look at hardware though lets have a spring clean

Please download ATF Cleaner by Atribune.

Under Main choose: Select All
Click the Empty Selected button.
If you use Firefox browserClick Firefox at the top and choose: Select All

If you use Opera browserClick Opera at the top and choose: Select All
Click the Empty Selected button.

Click Exit on the Main menu to close the program.
For Technical Support, double-click the e-mail address located at the bottom of each menu.

THEN

Download, install and run Tuneup Utilities 2008

Select Free up disk space

Select Unneccesary files and backups then clean

Select Maintain Windows

Run Drive Defrag

Run Tune Up registry clean up

Then run Reg Defrag, the screen will lose colour during the process which can take a few minutes and then needs a reboot

Those will have cleared the drive of obsolete software errors

These are suggestions for making the most of the free trial

Select Increase performance

Run the internet Optimiser to accelerate downloads, select the speed just above your actual connection speed, this requires a reboot.

After the reboot, click Increase performance then system optimizer to run system advisor

If you could let me know how it is running now

Sorry I am so slow in responding. I worked through everything you recommended last night. Haven't had a chance to see how fast everything is yet. I did want to let you know that the original SAS download I did was from a link on this website. I had gone through the list of what you are supposed to do before you send in your HJT log and SAS was one of them. I thought they might want to update their link.

I started SAS last night before I went to bed and checked it this morning. It had found a lot of things. I remember seeing Adware, 180solutions and Zango. I went ahead and quarantined everything. Does this actually remove it or is there something else I need to do?

I will give you an update on what else I find out tonight.

Thanks

Deanna :)
