It just seems sporadic. Sometimes I think it is going faster and then seems like we are right back where we started from. It is not just the internet that is slow. Everything seems slow. Just to switch between programs seems to take forever sometimes. I went to a couple of websites that I knew would not be in my cache to see how long it took to open the page. For example toshiba.com took almost 30 seconds to open. I have checked the speed on my DSL previously and it always comes back good.

One thing I didn't put in my earlier reply was when I ran TuneUp Registry Cleaner it keeps finding 32 file types as problems. I keep telling it to clean but these 32 will just not go away.

I was getting error messages a couple of weeks ago about virtual memory being low. I have not noticed those messages since you have started helping me.

TuneUp System Optimizer recommended upgrading my processor (currently 1.0 GHz) and adding memory. I only have 256 MB ram. I know that is not much but I never had problems with it before. If I do need to consider these options am I better off upgrading this computer or just purchasing a new computer? I know I can add memory myself, I don't know about a processor. I haven't ever had to do that before.

Let me know what your thoughts are.

Thanks,
Deanna

OK lets try this to reduce the load on your system, these are all non-essential programmes which will start when you need them and not when the programmers think they should

Please re-open HiJackThis and scan. Check the boxes next to all the entries listed below.

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [LXSUPMON] C:\WINDOWS\System32\LXSUPMON.EXE RUN
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [ISUSPM Startup] C:\PROGRA~1\COMMON~1\INSTAL~1\UPDATE~1\ISUSPM.exe -startup

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [Lexmark 1200 Series] "C:\Program Files\Lexmark 1200 Series\lxczbmgr.exe"
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [QuickTime Task] "C:\Program Files\QuickTime\qttask.exe" -atboottime

O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [SUPERAntiSpyware] C:\Program Files\SUPERAntiSpyware\SUPERAntiSpyware.exe
O4 - Global Startup: Kodak EasyShare software.lnk = C:\Program Files\KODAK\Kodak EasyShare software\bin\EasyShare.exe
O4 - Global Startup: KODAK Software Updater.lnk = C:\Program Files\KODAK\KODAK Software Updater\7288971\Program\Kodak Software Updater.exe

Now close all windows other than HiJackThis, then click Fix Checked. Close HiJackThis.

See what that does before we look at the hardware side :)

Don't give up on me yet. I haven't had much time to see how things are working. I will have some time this weekend to play around with it some.

When I was on the other day I thought it seemed like it was going considerably faster. I went a couple of days without getting on the computer at all and haven't been able to spend a lot of time on the computer since then but I watched my son on the internet last night and we were back to a snail's pace. My mother was playing a game we have installed the other day and said it was so slow she finally just turned it off.

My hard drive is pretty full, I thought I might get rid of a lot of my pictures that are currently on my hard drive since I have saved them to CD anyway. Do you think this would help any?

Your opinions are greatly appreciated.

That could be a part of the problem - as the drive fills up the files you use become more fragmented and defrag has to work harder to get them in some semblance of order. I did not use DSS which would have told me how much free space you have , but for the defragmenter to operate with any degree of efficiency you need at least 15% free space to shuffle the files around on.

Also I would recommend clearing your temporary internet files on a regular basis ( I do it daily ) by using ATF.

In fact if you could run DSS I would be able to see if that was part of the problem

Please download Deckard's System Scanner (DSS) and save it to your Desktop.
  • Close all other windows before proceeding.
  • Double-click on dss.exe and follow the prompts.
  • When it has finished, dss will open two Notepads main.txt and extra.txt -- please copy (CTRL+A and then CTRL+C) and paste (CTRL+V) the contents of main.txt and extra.txt in your next reply.

I am having a hard time getting this post to go through. Maybe the 3rd time will be a charm. I think I have moved below snails pace.

Here you go. By the way, I keep losing my printer. This is about the 4th time I have lost it. I can't remember what I have been doing to fix it but I always figure it out. I think I go into services and have to enable something. What could be causing this to happen? If I go to printers and faxes there is nothing there.

I don't know what is going on. I see where my first post actually appeared after my third attempt. I see it cut off the extra.txt file. I have been trying to send that file but am having absolutely no luck. I have tried copy and paste and uploading an attachment. Everytime I try to upload it errors out. :)

Here you go. By the way, I keep losing my printer. This is about the 4th time it has happened. I can't recall right off hand how I have been fixing it but I think I go into a Services tab somewhere and enable something. What would be causing this to keep happening?
