I have been receiving warning messages that my computer is infected with spyware .... click here to protect your coputer from spyware messages. I eventually get a popup "Windows Security Center System Warning" with red boarder and a clikc here to get software link. I believe this to be a form of a FakeAlert-t trojen. Please see attached screen shots.

It has replaced my desk top background with a "Warning Spyware Threat Has been detected on your PC.....Your computer has several fatal errors due to spyware activity...click here to scan your PC for spyware.

I run Windows XP with the standard MS browser. I can not connect to the internet

My screen goes black periodically. When I reboot I am able to get back to my desk top.

When I try to get to my Task Manager I get a "Task Manager has been disabled by your administrator" popup.

I found mrofinu72.exe, 180ax, salm, updatetc, bokja, stcloader and ntnut.exe in my Windows/system32 file along with a number of application extensions created at the same time. I was able to delete most of these files however they came back. I tried to delete mrofinu72 and was unsuccessful since I could not get to my task manager to kill the app.

I have run Adaware (which has the latest updates on the infected PC already)- did not resolve the problem.
I downloaded spybot via a second PC however when I installed it on the invected PC I could not update the files so it would not scan.

Same issue with the others recommended (AVG-antispyware, panda etc.)

I was able to download via my second PC and load & run the ATF Cleaner on the infected PC.

I was able to download via my second PC hijackthis file, load & run it on the infected PC. Below is the results:

Hi,

I see you have Viewpoint installed...
Viewpoint Manager is considered as foistware instead of malware since it is installed without users approval but doesn't spy or do anything "bad". This will change from what we know in 2006 read this article: http://www.clickz.co...cle.php/3561546
I suggest you remove the program now. Go to Start > Settings > Control Panel > Add/Remove Programs and remove the following programs if present.
  • Viewpoint
  • Viewpoint Manager
  • Viewpoint Media Player
Also,

I understand that you need help in order to get rid of the malware that is present on your system - But you need to help us first..
I notice that you never scanned with an Antivirus previously before starting this thread - because you don't even have an Antivirus installed!
This is somewhat suicidal in today's digital world.
That's why I want you to install one first!!

* Please install Avira Antivirus: http://www.free-av.com/
This is a free Antivirus.

Perform a full scan with Avira and let it delete everything it is finding.
Then reboot.
After reboot, open your Avira and select "reports".
There doubleclick the report from the Full scan you have done. Click the "Report File" button and copy and paste this report in your next reply together with a new HijackThislog.
Then we'll start from there, because it really makes no sense otherwise that we clean this up manually if an Antivirusscan is not present which should be able to deal with most and prevent further reinfection.

The virus has disabled by browsers So I can't get to the web to download the anti virus software.

Any suggestions on how I can regain control?

Thanks for the fast response. The infected PC is at home / 30 miles from my office which is where I am right now. I will be able to work on it after about 4:30pm CST today.

Hi,

I already see now why you don't have Internet Connection on the infected PC. Your LSP chain got broken.

To fix it easily (since the infected computer has Service Pack 2);

On the infected PC:
Go to start > run and type cmd
A dos Window will appear.
Type next in the dos window: netsh winsock reset
hit enter.

Reboot.

This should solve your broken connection.

Then you can perform the rest of the instructions. Keep in mind, running the Antivirus scanner won't resolve all your problems yet, but at least it will delete a LOT. The presence of an Antivirus is needed to prevent further infections.

Then once I have a new HijackThislog, we can proceed with the rest of the steps and run some other tools and scans. Priority now is the Antivirus :)

By the way...

I will be able to work on it after about 4:30pm CST today.

I guess we are in different Timezones.. so it could be possible once you're at home that I am already offline (will be night here - my time). But I'll reply asap :)
Anyway above instructions should already resolve the broken internet connection issue, so it will be easier for you :)

Good news: I was able to re-connect to the internet following your instructions. I downloaded and installed the Avira Antivirus program.

Bad news: My 4 year old Dell PC went into thermal overload trying to execute Avira. I have had problems in the past with this and installed a supplemental fan to cool the processer and late - just left the side off the box to get more air flow. Last night after the first shut down and thermal overload message upon reboot I pointed another big fan at the box and left the scan to run overnight. This AM it was dead & I could not boot up. I plan on a Circuit City visit this PM after work to see if there is a re-set possible or if I am looking at a new PC.

I will let you know if the patient can be revived.

Good news: I offloaded my important files to a backup drive yesterday before working the virus problem.

Thanks for your help.

Hi,

I am sorry to hear about the "thermal overheat". Seems like, whenever too much stress is put on your CPU, for example, playing games, defragmenting etc... that you will have this problem. This may indeed happen on older computers due to dust.
(dirt - dust between the cpu fan and other fans, so make sure they are spinning freely and there is a good airflow through the computer)

I have also seen on some computers that the BIOS can misreport the CPU temperature being too high and that's why it shuts down.

You can use Speedfan, a freeware program to monitor your voltages, fan speeds and temperatures.
http://www.almico.com/speedfan.php

Good you could backup important files previously.

FYI.....

After taking my Dell to Best Buy we declared it DOA (not worth the cost of fixing). I replaced it with a Mac and am in the process of converting over.

Thanks for your help.

I'm sorry to hear - but on the other side, looks like it was really needed to replace it with a new one.

And glad I could help.
