There are actually 2 patches you must apply or things will go very wrong for you.

COD v1.5 patch must be applied FIRST (call of duty)
http://www.maps-n-mo...p=getit&lid=763

then

COD:UO v1.51 patch must be applied (united offensive)
http://www.maps-n-mo...p=getit&lid=764

Yes you must apply both patches or you will have some major issues

well this is activisions official response:

When I attempt to install Call of Duty: United Offensive, I receive an error during the patch process that states, “The file c:\<invalid path>\pak0.pk3 could not be opened”. What does this mean?
  Answer
This can happen if you specified a folder that does not contain proper Call of Duty files or if the game files are corrupt. If this occurs, try reinstalling the original Call of Duty game and then launching the Call of Duty: United Offensive install process again.

I would uninstall everything and try reinstalling. this time specify the install path to be something like c:\program files\call of duty\
leave off the "game of the year". could be the path is to long for the patch to take.

sorry, been unexpectedly unavailable the last few days. there is a key in the registry that you could look at. when I get home I'll look it up. I've seen it install the patch, but not update the reg key properly.

Did EVERYTHING there was posted on this topic:
AND STILL GETTING THE ;) ;) :) ERROR
:)
gettin a bit frustraded here...
Positive energy in "inhale"
Negative energy out "exhale"
..
.
feelin better :)
Ok this is what i've done:
-Installed (a dozen times) COD in the normal path
-Patched it with 1.5 PATCH
-Installed COD:UO
Then
-patched it right away with the 1,51 patch
OR
-Copyed the I:\SETUP\DATA\UO Folder to my UO mdirectory and then patched it with the 1,51 patch

And still gettin the error: "The file C:\Program Files\Call of Duty Game of the Year Edition\uo\pakuo01.pk3 is not a valid previous version and could not be upgraded"

Now i just :tazz:

find someone with the non game of the year edition and install codup from there using your cd key. From all the questions about cod that I have seen I am convinced that the GotY edition has some issues.
