MS Word 2000 Keeps Opening Last Document

I am helping my church with some processes, and they have some old software. A Word 2000 workstation keeps trying to open the same old document. We cannot get it out of Word's memory. I have never seen anything like it in 15 years of working with Word. It is almost an 'autorecovery' type of behaviour (though there is no autorecovery message). Anyone see anything like that? Any viruses that behave like that? Thanks
