Okay here is the issue. I went to my ex's MySpace page to send her a message regarding a future court date. After I had sent the message, I decided to close out my browser(Mozilla Firefox). When I closed out, my Windows Live OneCare shut down(it gave an error message telling me it was stopped or canceled and I needed to restart), my Taskbar and Start Menu disappeared and my audio got disabled. I rebooted. Nothing. Nada. Zip.

My OneCare is giving me messages like this: "This application has failed to start because the application configuration is incorrect. Reinstalling the application may fix the problem." I tried and failed. My audio is still not working( AND YES, all my wires are hooked up properly and everything.) My Taskbar and Start Menu button is still gone and I am at my wits end with this. Everything was working PERFECTLY when my gf turned the PC on this morning, and before I went to my ex's MySpace page. [bleep], last night everything was perfectly fine.

I ran Hijackthis and this is the log file if it helps:

OK lets take a deeper look

Please download Deckard's System Scanner (DSS) and save it to your Desktop.
  • Close all other windows before proceeding.
  • Double-click on dss.exe and follow the prompts.
  • When it has finished, dss will open two Notepads main.txt and extra.txt -- please copy (CTRL+A and then CTRL+C) and paste (CTRL+V) the contents of main.txt and extra.txt in your next reply.

One or more of the identified infections is a backdoor Trojan and a key logger.

If this computer is ever used for on-line banking, I suggest you do the following immediately:

1. Call all of your banks, credit card companies, financial institutions and inform them that you may be a victim of identity theft and to put a watch on your accounts or change all your account numbers.

2. From a clean computer, change ALL your on-line passwords for email, for banks, financial accounts, PayPal, eBay, on-line companies, any on-line forums or groups you belong to.

Do NOT change passwords or do any transactions while using the infected computer because the attacker will get the new passwords and transaction information.

Lets see if I can fix it

Please download the OTMoveIt2 by OldTimer.
  • Save it to your desktop.
  • Please double-click OTMoveIt2.exe to run it.
  • Copy the file paths below to the clipboard by highlighting ALL of them and pressing CTRL + C (or, after highlighting, right-click and choose Copy):

    C:\WINDOWS\system32\H@tKeysH@@k.DLL
  • Return to OTMoveIt2, right click in the "Paste List of Files/Folders to be Moved" window (under the light blue bar) and choose Paste.
  • Copy the file paths below to the clipboard by highlighting ALL of them and pressing CTRL + C (or, after highlighting, right-click and choose Copy):

    Purity
  • Return to OTMoveIt2, right click in the "Paste List Of Files/Patterns To Search For and Move" window (under the yellow bar) and choose Paste.
  • Click the red Moveit! button.
  • Copy everything in the Results window (under the green bar) to the clipboard by highlighting ALL of them and pressing CTRL + C (or, after highlighting, right-click and choose copy), and paste it in your next reply.
  • Close OTMoveIt2
If a file or folder cannot be moved immediately you may be asked to reboot the machine to finish the move process. If you are asked to reboot the machine choose Yes.

THEN

Make sure that DSS.exe is located on your Desktop.
Click on your START button, then choose Run. A little box will appear.
Now copy and paste all the following in bold (including the "" marks) into the run box and click OK.

"%userprofile%\desktop\dss.exe" /daft

This will start DSS in a different way. A small window will appear.
Click on the Scan button.
If it finds faulty file associations, they will appear in red beside a checkbox. If this occurs, just place a tick in the boxes in question.
Click the Fix button.
Re-scan and save a logfile. By default, it will save as daft.txt.

FINALLY FOR NOW

Please download ComboFix from Here or Here to your Desktop.

**Note: In the event you already have Combofix, this is a new version that I need you to download. It is important that it is saved directly to your desktop**
  • Please, never rename Combofix unless instructed.
  • Close any open browsers.
  • Close/disable all anti virus and anti malware programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix.

    -----------------------------------------------------------

    • Very Important! Temporarily disable your anti-virus, script blocking and any anti-malware real-time protection before performing a scan. They can interfere with ComboFix or remove some of its embedded files which may cause "unpredictable results".
    • Click on this link to see a list of programs that should be disabled. The list is not all inclusive. If yours is not listed and you don't know how to disable it, please ask.

      -----------------------------------------------------------

    • Close any open browsers.
    • WARNING: Combofix will disconnect your machine from the Internet as soon as it starts
    • Please do not attempt to re-connect your machine back to the Internet until Combofix has completely finished.
    • If there is no internet connection after running Combofix, then restart your computer to restore back your connection.

    -----------------------------------------------------------

  • Double click on combofix.exe & follow the prompts.
  • When finished, it will produce a report for you.
  • Please post the "C:\ComboFix.txt" along with a new HijackThis log for further review.
**Note: Do not mouseclick combofix's window while it's running. That may cause it to stall**

Um....My desktop and icons and everything are gone! I had to go into the Task Manager to get back to Firefox to come here. Is that normal!?

This is really frustrating me. I rebooted my system and I got my Desktop Icons back, but I have no Taskbar/Start Menu button, I still have no audio, and I can't drag my icons around. What's going on with my PC?

To get your taskbar and start button back

Download fixshell.zip and extract the file to your desktop
Double click fixshell.com it may take a while and need a reboot
Let me know if your desktop returns

1. Please open Notepad
  • Click Start , then Run
  • Type notepad .exe in the Run Box.

2. Now copy/paste the entire content of the codebox below into the Notepad window:

File::
C:\44.tmp

Folder::
C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\svchost
C:\PROGRA~1\NEWDOT~1
C:\Program Files\Save

Registry::
[-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\software\microsoft\shared tools\msconfig\startupreg\My Web Search Bar]
[-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\software\microsoft\shared tools\msconfig\startupreg\MyWebSearch Email Plugin]

3. Then in the text file go to FILE > SAVE AS and in the dropdown box select SAVE AS TYPE to ALL FILES

4. Save the above as CFScript.txt

5. Then drag the CFScript.txt into ComboFix.exe as depicted in the animation below. This will start ComboFix again.

Posted Image

5. After reboot, (in case it asks to reboot), please post the following reports/logs into your next reply:
  • Combofix.txt
  • A new HijackThis log.

THEN

Download Dr.Web CureIt to the desktop:
ftp://ftp.drweb.com/pub/drweb/cureit/drweb-cureit.exe
  • Doubleclick the drweb-cureit.exe file and Allow to run the express scan
  • This will scan the files currently running in memory and when something is found, click the yes button when it asks you if you want to cure it. This is only a short scan.
  • Once the short scan has finished, mark the drives that you want to scan.
  • Select all drives. A red dot shows which drives have been chosen.
  • Click the green arrow at the right, and the scan will start.
  • Click 'Yes to all' if it asks if you want to cure/move the file.
  • When the scan has finished, in the menu, click file and choose save report list
  • Save the report to your desktop. The report will be called DrWeb.csv
  • Close Dr.Web Cureit.

My Taskbar and Start Menu button did NOT return. But, *sigh* I am about to follow your instructions. I will post up the log results in a few minutes. Oh, btw, for some reason I can't Copy and Paste. You know that code box you asked me to copy and paste in Notepad and drag to Combofix? Well, it wouldn't let me and I had to type everything in manually. Oh, and I can't drag any of my icons on my desktop. So, dragging that CFScript file over to Combofix....isn't going to happen. So, what do I do?

This scan looks like it's gonna take awhile. So, I am going to head off to my Halo 3 tournament. It'll be done by the time I return, hopefully. I'll post up the results in my next reply.
