Hi all! Basically, this is my brother's computer log, and he's got a lot of stuff wrong, it seems. I'm helping him sort out some stuff, and this is the log I got back. There's some things I've spotted that I know I could delete myself from HJT, but I'd rather have someone experienced look at it before I delete things. Any help is appreciated. :tazz:

RyanH,

Welcome to the Geeks to Go Forums, My name is Justin and I will be helping you clean you system. Lets start off with some programs that will take away some of the more obvious spyware and whatnot.

You have a number of different problems that I can see. Lets start out with some general scans and see if we cant clean things up a little.

Please download Spybot Search & Destroy and AdAware.

Follow all the instructions on this website to run a scan with both of these softwares.

Please run an on-line virus scan at Kaspersky OnLine Scan or if that doesnt work, you can use TrendMicro or BitDefender. (Please post the results of the scan(s) in your next reply)

Please download Ewido

Install it and then double click on the new icon for the program. You can't miss it, it's a big yellow E. It will ask you to upgrade the database. Follow the instructions.
Once it is ready click on the Scanner button, Select C drive if you have more than one and then start.

This scan may take a while, but please allow it to complete the entire scan.

At then end of the scan, it may ask if you would like to delete anything found in archive or zipped files, OK that request, then click on save report. SAVE to the default location, it will then generate a text file. Copy that to post in this thread.

After that, I will need to see two different logs from HiJackThis. The first is the normal log like you posted here. To get the other one, follow these directions.

Open HijackThis, click Config, click Misc Tools
Click "Open Uninstall Manager"
Click "Save List" (generates uninstall_list.txt)
Click Save, copy and paste the results in your next post.

Post back with those logs and we can continue from there.

Thanks for the reply! :tazz:

Unforunately, I got a little trigger-happy, and I went ahead and deleted what I knew was bad from Hijack This. I then ran AdAware in regular and safe modes, and followed up with Spybot S&D. Then I installed Service Pack 2, which wasn't already installed, and I'm at my latest crossroads.

The problem now is that I can connect through the wireless router to AOL Instant Messanger, but I can't connect to the internet. I suspect there's more that needs to be deleted, most likely. Should I repost another Hijack This logfile for you to take a look at?

Another piece of advice I'm wondering about is if you think it would be quicker and easier to just reformat the drive and reinstall XP.

RyanH,

Reformatting and reinstalling everything is, in my mind, always the last thing you should ever do.

HiJackThis creates backup files of what ever you delete.

My suggestion is to restore your HiJackThis Log
  • Open HiJackThis
  • Click Open the Misc Tools section
  • Click the Backups button
  • Place a check mark next to everything in that window
  • Click Restore
  • Click Yes
  • Reboot your computer
And then continue with the above scans that I noted in my first post. This will ensure that nothing good was accidentally deleted.

Once that is done, please post all of the requested logs.

Justin

Ok, unfortuneately because the spyware on that system won't allow me to update or upgrade programs/definitions, or even access the internet at all, I wasn't able to download the "E" program, or run any of the online virus scans. I did run AdAware and Spybot, and these are the two Hijack This logs I was able to produce:

RyanH,

Try these fixes, and then run the scans I mentioned above. This is by no means everything, but it should be enough to let you run the above scans.

Please re-open HiJackThis and scan. Check the boxes next to all the entries listed below.

Justin,

I performed the fixes listed, but I was still unable to access the internet. I checked, and I'm still able to connect and actively use AOL Instant Messenger just fine, but I still can't access any webpages. Here's my updated HiJack This! log, if it's any help:

RyanH,

Please download CleanUp!

After installing the program:

1. Click on Start, Programs, CleanUp!, CleanUp!.
2. A dialog will appear. Click on the button labeled "CleanUp!".

Also, what error message are you getting when you try to load a webpage.

Installed and ran CleanUp!, it freed up 1.6GB of space.

Yet still, I can't access any webpages. The error message I get when trying to connect to msn.com, yahoo.com, etc. is "This Page Cannot Be Displayed", followed by instructions on how to fix the problem... though we know those don't work. :tazz:

I'm getting scared to the point that there may be nothing we can do.

RyanH,

Dont give up, we will find this out.

Open HiJackThis and scan your computer. Place a check next to these files below:

O8 - Extra context menu item: Ebates - file://C:\Program Files\EbatesMoeMoneyMaker\System\Temp\ebates_script0.htm
O8 - Extra context menu item: LimeShop Preferences - file://c:\Program Files\topMoxie\TEMP\limeshop_script.htm
O8 - Extra context menu item: Web Rebates - file://C:\Program Files\Web_Rebates\Sy1150\Tp1150\scri1150a.htm

Close all windows except HiJackThis

Then select Fix Checked.

Reboot your computer and post a new HiJackThis log for me.

Also, im assuming that you are using Internet Explorer, so go to:

Tools -->Internet Options--->Security Tab---> And click on Default settings, then let me know if your internet is working.

The internet still won't connect. It's strange though, because when I open IE, it displays the Cannot Be Displayed page almost immediately, like it isn't even trying to connect.

RyanH,

A few more HiJackThis Fixes and then Ill see if any of the other helpers have any ideas, because your log is near clean. Please do not give up on me and reformat, we can beat this without reformatting.

Open HiJackThis and scan your computer. Place a check mark next to the following:

R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer,SearchURL = http://www.searchgateway.net/search/
R3 - URLSearchHook: (no name) - {0FA33B6C-71BC-69D3-DB7A-472A4D6F3452} - (no file)

Close all windows, except HiJackThis and select Fix Checked

Reboot and post a fresh HiJackThis Log.

RyanH,

Lets try these fixes, and hopefully you will be surfing the internet in no time!

First, turn off any Third Party Browser Extensions.

To do this, start up Internet Explorer Go to the Tools Menu
Select Internet Options
Click the Advanced Tab
Then uncheck the box Enable Third-Party Browser Extensions
Reboot when asked
Next we are going to flush your dns.

To do this
[list]
Click Start
Click Run
Type in cmd
When the box opens up, type in ipconfig
When text shows up, type flushdns

Next, if you have access to another computer please download CCleaner.

Then burn it onto a disk or save to a floppy drive and install it on your computer. Once installed, right click on your recycle bin and select Open CCleaner.

Now select Run Cleaner.

Once the above is complete, let me know if you have internet access.

First part went fine, but when I tried the ipconfig command, it gave me a message after I accessed ipconfig, and attempted to type flushdns, that it wasn't an existing internal or external command.
