I have Norton 2007, Ad-Aware2007. I run Windows XP. Disabled some Norton security features to play some games. Forgot to reenable them. Went to Surfthechannel dot com to watch an old episode of Avatar, Last Airbender. ActiveX control wanted to be installed. I exited the site, but I heard my harddrive working and the "control" was installed. 20 seconds later I get the following:

A fake Windows Security Center System Warning popup that tells me that 007Spy is infecting my computer. Asks me to update my protection.

System Tray yellow triangle (taken over by spyware) that tells me "Your security and privacy are at risk! Spyware has been detected on your computer...etc. Clicking on it takes me to SpyMaxx site to download their fake anti-spyware software.

Ctl-Alt-Delete has been "disabled by administrator" (disabled by this fooking spyware).

System restore points won't work.

Norton and Ad-Aware bring up 180Solutions.seek file, 2020Search, Win32.SecondThought, PurityScan. I remove them, and upon reboot, they are back.

Starting in Safe mode still brings up the annoying fake Windows Security system warnings and the fake system tray warnings.

I've taken the day off of work b/c I'm so stressed out about this. 3 years with my computer and absolutely no issues, and now I make one mistake and I'm screwed.

Here's my Hijack this log. If you guys can solve this, I'll donate money to your favorite charity--I'll be that thankful.

Ok... For the first step,

Please download SmitfraudFix (by S!Ri) to your Desktop.

Double-click SmitfraudFix.exe
Select option #1 - Search by typing 1 and press "Enter"; a text file will appear, which lists infected files (if present).
Please copy/paste the content of that report into your next reply.

**If the tool fails to launch from the Desktop, please move SmitfraudFix.exe directly to the root of the system drive (usually C:), and launch from there.

Note : process.exe is detected by some antivirus programs (AntiVir, Dr.Web, Kaspersky) as a "RiskTool"; it is not a virus, but a program used to stop system processes. Antivirus programs cannot distinguish between "good" and "malicious" use of such programs, therefore they may alert the user.
http://www.beyondlog...processutil.htm

Please make sure you post complete log... :)

Hi friend, computer hero, saint, etc.

I've been scanning the message boards and over the past few days there have been a few other instances of the same type of problem I've had. I realize you are very busy and have a life and are helping other people on these boards. So I took some basic matters into my own hands to make life easier!

Here's what I did.

I redid Hijack this. I clicked on the following boxes and fixed them (pretty sure these were the ones):

I downloaded Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and ran a quick scan. Anything that came up was removed.

I downloaded ComboFix and ran a scan.

Results:

I got my desktop back (no more CLICK HERE FOR ANTIVIRUS SOFTWARE).
No popups for SpyMaxx software.
Hard-drive is going crazy with activity even if I'm not doing anything.

I'm sure this computer is not completely clean yet. Attached are the logs from the scans if you need them.

Here's the new Hijack this:

The scan revealed that you are infected with Smitfraud...

To remove it, first print out these instructions, or copy them to a NotePad file for reading while in Safe Mode, because you will not be able to connect to the Internet to read from this site.

Next, please reboot your computer in Safe Mode by doing the following :
  • Restart your computer
  • After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, tap the F8 key continually;
  • Instead of Windows loading as normal, a menu with options should appear;
  • Select the first option, to run Windows in Safe Mode, then press "Enter".
  • Choose your usual account.
Once in Safe Mode, double-click on SmitfraudFix.exe
Select option #2 - Clean by typing 2 and press "Enter" to delete infected files.

You will be prompted : "Registry cleaning - Do you want to clean the registry ?"; answer "Yes" by typing Y and press "Enter" in order to remove the Desktop background and clean registry keys associated with the infection.

The tool will now check if wininet.dll is infected. You may be prompted to replace the infected file (if found); answer "Yes" by typing Y and press "Enter".

The tool may need to restart your computer to finish the cleaning process; if it doesn't, please restart it into Normal Windows.
A text file will appear onscreen, with results from the cleaning process; please copy/paste the content of that report into your next reply.
The report can also be found at the root of the system drive, usually at C:\rapport.txt

Warning : running option #2 on a non infected computer will remove your Desktop background.

Next,

Please download Deckard's System Scanner (DSS) and save it to your Desktop.
  • Close all other windows before proceeding.
  • Double-click on dss.exe and follow the prompts.
  • When it has finished, dss will open two Notepads main.txt and extra.txt -- please copy (CTRL+A and then CTRL+C) and paste (CTRL+V) the contents of main.txt and extra.txt in your next reply.

Please make sure you post back with complete content of logs... :)

Hi Koko, I just ran Kapersky again. At first glance I thought I had SmitFraud still, but the program listed is the SmitFraudFix program. I'm guessing this will go off the report when I uninstall the program.

Here you go...looks like I have Trojan-Downloader.Win32.Agent.Iqu

You must be pretty busy today, so I'll look around the message boards and maybe someone is having the same problem. I'll try not to do anything stupid. :) Looking foward to hearing your advice!

Gusano

Hello gusano2344,

Sorry for the delay. I was going to suggest you run an online can but I see that you already went ahead and did it.
Let's run Sdfix in hopes that it'll take care of the infection...

Download SDFix and save it to your Desktop.

Double click SDFix.exe and it will extract the files to %systemdrive%
(Drive that contains the Windows Directory, typically C:\SDFix)

Please then reboot your computer in Safe Mode by doing the following :
  • Restart your computer
  • After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, tap the F8 key continually;
  • Instead of Windows loading as normal, the Advanced Options Menu should appear;
  • Select the first option, to run Windows in Safe Mode, then press Enter.
  • Choose your usual account.
  • Open the extracted SDFix folder and double click RunThis.bat to start the script.
  • Type Y to begin the cleanup process.
  • It will remove any Trojan Services and Registry Entries that it finds then prompt you to press any key to Reboot.
  • Press any Key and it will restart the PC.
  • When the PC restarts the Fixtool will run again and complete the removal process then display Finished, press any key to end the script and load your desktop icons.
  • Once the desktop icons load the SDFix report will open on screen and also save into the SDFix folder as Report.txt
    (Report.txt will also be copied to Clipboard ready for posting back on the forum).
  • Finally paste the contents of the Report.txt back on the forum with a new HijackThis log

Hi, Koko!

While I was waiting, I did some more research and performed the SDFix scan. :) I saved a copy of the log for you. Thanks again for your valuable help and advice! I hope this log looks okay. :) After this log, I'll put up another Hijack this log.
