Hello,

I found your website by running a search on getting rid of nail.exe. I have been getting help for some time now from VirtualDr Forum. Although the person helping me has been very helpful, we cannot get nail.exe off my computer. When I found the thread similar to mine here at Geeks to Go, it said to download ewido, which I did, and ran. It got rid of 16 infected items, but 1 keeps coming back, or is just staying, and that is nail.exe. We can't fix it on hijack this, or any number of things such as killbox, a command prompt with nail.exe /FullRemove, or anything, in both normal and safe modes. It just keeps coming back! Or never going away!

And now with ewido running, every site I go to it "catches" BetterInternet spyware. This is on Mozilla Firefox and Internet Explorer. I first went to VirtualDr Forum because I had Aurora popups nonstop. I may still have them, I am unsure whether that got fixed with the 15 infected items that ewido fixed.

Thank you so much for any help you give me!

So here is my logfile:

There seem to be two different nail infections. The easiest to kill just requires that Explorer (your desktop) not be running when you run HijackThis. The hardest to kill has a file TODOxxx which runs in stealth mode. See if you have the first one:

Shutdown and reboot into Safe Mode by tapping the F8 key when you see the PC
maker's logo.
Keep tapping until it tells you it is going to Safe Mode or you see the Safe
Mode menu. Select the top option.

Run HijackThis and just do a Scan only. Check then Fix
Checked the following:

F2 - REG:system.ini: Shell=Explorer.exe C:\WINDOWS\Nail.exe

Wait 60 seconds and repeat the scan. Did any of the above come back? IF so
leave HijackThis up and right click on the clock and select Task Manager. Then
Processes. Find Explorer.exe, right click on it and select End Process. The
desktop will disappear but HijackThis should still be there. IF you don't see
it switch to Applications in Task Manager and highlight it there then press
Switch To or just double click on it. Check and Fix Checked the above again.
Restart Explorer by Task Manager, File, New Task(Run), explorer.exe, OK.

Now run ccleaner.exe. On the first page, uncheck everything but the two lines
that have the word Temporary in them then Run Cleaner.

Also clean the prefetch folder. Start, Run, cmd, OK

then

del /q c:\windows\prefetch\*.*

IF it's still there after a reboot then try mwav.exe. It is the world's slowest program (takes hours to run) but it does often fix stuff that no one else can.

http://www.spywarein...wnload/mwav.exe

Another fix is to boot off the CD and go into the recovery console and locate and delete the TODO and nail files. There is actually a third random named file but I think ewido must get it. Trend Micro will.

I have one other possibility but it's getting late so try the first one or two and let me know what happens.

Wow, this forum moves fast!

Yesterday, I had actually done a couple of these steps from surfing through some of your topics about nail. I seem to have gotten it. However, do I have any other items? When I ran FindIt, it still said there are Aurora files and Todo files.

Here is my hijack this log from today:

Shh!.. I'll probably get yelled at for not working the older stuff first but I am interested in nail so I answered yours out of turn.

I don't see anything running in your hijackThis log but I would advise you to remove any files that findit found. Especially the TODOs and anything else associated with aurora.
