Help! MY PC says i am infected by a trojan virus

hi. my Norton subscription ran out and now my PC has pop ups that say i have been infected with a Trojan virus and i need to download NOW the software to remove it! I renewed my subscription to Norton today, and it finds some stuff, but it doesn't remove it!! please help!
I HAVE XP.
