Good Morning. I have never felt the need to use a site like your but I appreciate the time and effort that has gone into making a site like this for us non-geeks, so to speak. I'm not sure when my problems started but it has been within the last week or so. Originally it showed up with the message "Your Task Manager has been disabled by your administrator" message. I snooped around on the internet and found a tool to re-enable it and that went away. However, I noticed on several occasions, the task bar would freeze up - I couldn't click on anything there. Eventually would reboot. That is when these awful popups just start running on their own. Sites like Toseeka and Cookingluck would come up. Eventually it lands on a porn site that is totally inappropriate. I'm glad I happened upon it and not my children. Anyway, I have got to figure out what is causing these. They only seem to happen right after a reboot. Once I close them, they don't seem to be coming back until the next reboot. I need some technical assistance.

I read through your 'You Must Read This First' forum and have spent most of last night following your directions.

I downloaded and ran the ATF Cleaner. I then set a system restore point and removed the previous ones. I then downloaded and ran the AVG Anti-Spyware as directed. Rebooted in Safe mode and ran that. It found 215 things, mostly cookies, and quarantined them. However, when I clicked on Reports - it said there were no reports. I found that curious. Anyway, I proceeded to run the SUPERAntiSpyware. It found nothing so it did not ask me to reboot. I did save the scan log. I then ran the Panda Activescan which found 23 or so items. I also saved that report. Finally, I downloaded HJT and ran it as directed, saving that log and also created the Uninstall list as well.

Attached are the logs and reports as follows:

Thank you very much for looking at this and giving me some advice on how to eliminate whatever is taking over my desktop. (Strangely enough, while I was cutting and pasting these logs, my computer mysteriously starting playing an audio commercial of sorts for Showtime - and there is nothing open except your site and these logs I am using.) ???

Thanks, again. I look forward to your assistance...
Craig.

Hello

Before we begin, you should save these instructions in Notepad to your desktop, or print them, for easy reference. Much of our fix will be done in Safe mode, and you will be unable to access this thread at that time. If you have questions at any point, or are unsure of the instructions, feel free to post here and ask for clarification before proceeding.

Please download SmitfraudFix (by S!Ri) to your Desktop.

Next, please reboot your computer in Safe Mode by doing the following :
  • Restart your computer
  • After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, tap the F8 key continually;
  • Instead of Windows loading as normal, a menu with options should appear;
  • Select the first option, to run Windows in Safe Mode, then press "Enter".
  • Choose your usual account.
Once in Safe Mode, double-click on SmitfraudFix.exe
Select option #2 - Clean by typing 2 and press "Enter" to delete infected files.

You will be prompted : "Registry cleaning - Do you want to clean the registry ?"; answer "Yes" by typing Y and press "Enter" in order to remove the Desktop background and clean registry keys associated with the infection.

The tool will now check if wininet.dll is infected. You may be prompted to replace the infected file (if found); answer "Yes" by typing Y and press "Enter".

The tool may need to restart your computer to finish the cleaning process; if it doesn't, please restart it into Normal Windows.
A text file will appear onscreen, with results from the cleaning process; please copy/paste the content of that report into your next reply.
The report can also be found at the root of the system drive, usually at C:\rapport.txt

Warning : running option #2 on a non infected computer will remove your Desktop background.

Please download Deckard's System Scanner (DSS) and save it to your Desktop.
  • Close all other windows before proceeding.
  • Double-click on dss.exe and follow the prompts.
  • If your anti-virus or firewall complains, please allow this script to run as it is not malicious.
  • When it has finished, dss will open two Notepads main.txt and extra.txt -- please copy (CTRL+A and then CTRL+C) and paste (CTRL+V) the contents of main.txt and extra.txt in your next reply.

Rorschach112,

Thank you for your reply. I realize that this is free help and so I truly to appreciate it. I posted my inquiry on 3/26 after spending most of 3/25 running the 'run first' stuff from your website. In my impatience (the porn site kept coming back), I continued to search the internet and ran across another place with similar tools for assisting in removal of this stuff on 3/27.

I ran a couple of their programs and at this point, the popups are gone. I will go ahead and attach the latest HJT log to this reply. If you see anything else to add, I would be grateful. What really concerns me is the fact that I have McAfee running and this occurred. Any thoughts as to - what I did to allow these to get on my system? - what I can do to avoid it in the future?

Thanks so much,
Coach Craig.

It is related to bad codecs usually, so any suspicious sites where somebody checked a video is probably responsible.

If you go and run DSS I can be 100% sure whether you are clean or not

Don't attach the logs though

Can you post the logs here, and not attach them, as it makes them hard to read if you attach them, and I would be more likely to miss something.

So just post them in here like you would with a HijackThis log, you may need two posts to fit them all

Looking good

Please do an online scan with Kaspersky WebScanner

Click on Kaspersky Online Scanner and click Accept

You will be prompted to install an ActiveX component from Kaspersky, Click Yes.
  • The program will launch and then begin downloading the latest definition files:
  • Once the files have been downloaded click on NEXT
  • Now click on Scan Settings
  • In the scan settings make that the following are selected:
    • Scan using the following Anti-Virus database:
    Extended (if available otherwise Standard)
    • Scan Options:
    Scan Archives
    Scan Mail Bases
  • Click OK
  • Now under select a target to scan:Select My Computer
  • This will program will start and scan your system.
  • The scan will take a while so be patient and let it run.
  • Once the scan is complete it will display if your system has been infected.
    • Now click on the Save as Text button:
  • Save the file to your desktop.
  • Copy and paste that information in your next post.

Also tell me how your PC is running

Your logs are clean ! We need to do a few things

You can delete the tools that we used

Your using an old version of Adobe Acrobat Reader, this can leave your pc open to vulnerabilities, you can update it here :
http://www.adobe.com.../readstep2.html

Now we need to create a new System Restore point.

Click Start Menu > Run > type (or copy and paste)

%SystemRoot%\System32\restore\rstrui.exe

Press OK. Choose Create a Restore Point then click Next. Name it and click Create, when the confirmation screen shows the restore point has been created click Close.

Next goto Start Menu > Run > type

cleanmgr

Click OK, Disk Cleanup will open and start calculating the amount of space that can be freed, Once thats finished it will open the Disk Cleanup options screen, click the More Options tab then click Clean up on the system restore area and choose Yes at the confirmation window which will remove all the restore points except the one we just created.

To close Disk Cleanup and remove the Temporary Internet Files detected in the initial scan click OK then choose Yes on the confirmation window.

Below I have included a number of recommendations for how to protect your computer against malware infections.

* Keep Windows updated by regularly checking their website at :
http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com/
This will ensure your computer has always the latest security updates available installed on your computer.

* To reduce re-infection for malware in the future, I strongly recommend installing these free programs:
SpywareBlaster protects against bad ActiveX
IE-SPYAD puts over 5000 sites in your restricted zone so you'll be protected when you visit innocent-looking sites that aren't actually innocent at all
Have a look at this tutorial for IE-Spyad here

* SpywareGuard offers realtime protection from spyware installation attempts.

Make Internet Explorer more secure
  • Click Start > Run
  • Type Inetcpl.cpl & click OK
  • Click on the Security tab
  • Click Reset all zones to default level
  • Make sure the Internet Zone is selected & Click Custom level
  • In the ActiveX section, set the first two options ("Download signed and unsigned ActiveX controls) to "Prompt", and ("Initialize and Script ActiveX controls not marked as safe") to "Disable".
  • Next Click OK, then Apply button and then OK to exit the Internet Properties page.

* MVPS Hosts file replaces your current HOSTS file with one containing well known ad sites and other bad sites. Basically, this prevents your computer from connecting to those sites by redirecting them to 127.0.0.1 which is your local computer, meaning it will be difficult to infect yourself in the future.

* Please consider using an alternate browser. Mozilla's Firefox browser is fantastic; it is much more
secure than Internet Explorer, immune to almost all known browser hijackers, and also has the best built-in pop up
blocker (as an added benefit!) that I have ever seen. If you are interested, Firefox may be downloaded from
Here

* Take a good look at the following suggestions for malware prevention by reading Tony Klein’s article 'How Did I Get Infected In The First Place'
Here

Thank you for your patience, and performing all of the procedures requested.
