Hello,

My laptop has been infected with some viruses and I just do not know how to get rid of them. I have done n number of things including the Panda Kaspersky and BitDefender Online scans. Previously I had AVG Scanner on my computer but it was not able to clean the virus after detecting it. One of the viruses was PSW.Onlinegames among others. I have also done a AVG Spyware scan which took nearly 2 hours but somehow was not able to save the report. If you need the Anti Spyware report kindly let me know and I will do the scan once again. I forgot to add that the virus does not let me view any hidden files. When I go to the windows explorer and check 'View Hidden files' the option does not get activated.

Now close all windows other than HiJackThis, then click Fix Checked. Close HiJackThis.

THEN

Please download ComboFix from Here or Here to your Desktop.

  • Close any open browsers.
  • Close/disable all anti virus and anti malware programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix.

First of all thanks a ton for your help. I followed your instructions and everything went well till the the fixing part of hijack this. When I ran combo fix, it did not turn off the internet as per what you said. It prompted me for 3 files which showed some virus patterns, and I denied them access. The funny part was that instead of the C:\Combofix.txt file which u said would appear, there is a new folder C:\Combofix with a whole load files in it and none of them is a .txt format. I don't think I went wrong somewhere because I tried it twice, any other solution?

The report should be at C:\Combofix.txt the combofix folder is where everything for the programme resides :)

Lets use another scanning programme to see what is left

Download OTScanit to your Desktop and double-click on it to extract the files. It will create a folder named OTScanIt on your desktop.
  • Close ALL OTHER PROGRAMS.
  • Open the OTScanit folder and double-click on OTScanit.exe to start the program.
  • Check the box that says Scan All User Accounts
  • Check the Radio buttons for Files/Folders Created Within 90 Days and Files/Folders Modified Within 90 Days
  • Under Additional Scans check the following:
    • Reg - BotCheck
    • File - Additional Folder Scans
    • File - Purity Scan
  • Now click the Run Scan button on the toolbar.
  • Let it run unhindered until it finishes.
  • When the scan is complete Notepad will open with the report file loaded in it.
  • Click the Format menu and make sure that Wordwrap is not checked. If it is then click on it to uncheck it.
Please attach the log in your next post.

To attach a file, do the following:
  • Click Add Reply
  • Under the reply panel is the Attachments Panel
  • Browse for the attachment file you want to upload, then click the green Upload button
  • Once it has uploaded, click the Manage Current Attachments drop down box
  • Click on Posted Image to insert the attachment into your post

Thank you for your help. I am attaching the files for both the scans. The combofix it scan did not run initially because the AVIRA Anti Virus was running in the background and I thought it was off since it wasn't on the system tray. I have done it right this time round. Awaiting your reply. Thank you in advance.

I have noticed that you have three antiviruses installed on your system Norton, AVG and Avira

Anti-Virus programs take up an enormous amount of your computer's resources when they are actively scanning your computer. Having two anti-virus programs running at the same time can cause your computer to run very slow, become unstable and even, in rare cases, crash.

If you choose to install more than one Anti-Virus program on your computer, then only one of them should be active in memory at a time.

There are basically two types of these programs:
On-Access and On-Demand

On-Access Scanners
As the name implies, are scanners that run in the background all the time the PC is turned on and running. The main function of an On-Access scanner is to monitor activity on your machine.

On-Demand Scanners
As the name implies, are scanners that only run when you ask them to.
Such as:
Online Scans and scanners that run on your machine but are not actively scanning your machine

Which one do you intend to keep as a resident AV ?

Start OTScanit. Copy/Paste the information in the quotebox below into the pane where it says "Paste fix here" and then click the Run Fix button.

The fix should only take a very short time. When the fix is completed a message box will popup telling you that it is finished. Click the Ok button and Notepad will open with a log of actions taken during the fix. Post that information back here along with a new Hijackthis log.

I will review the information when it comes back in.

Also let me know of any problems you encountered performing the steps above or any continuing problems you are still having with the computer.

Please download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware from Here or Here

Double Click mbam-setup.exe to install the application.
  • Make sure a checkmark is placed next to Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, then click Finish.
  • If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
  • Once the program has loaded, select "Perform Quick Scan", then click Scan.
  • The scan may take some time to finish,so please be patient.
  • When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
  • Make sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
  • When disinfection is completed, a log will open in Notepad and you may be prompted to Restart.(See Extra Note)
  • The log is automatically saved by MBAM and can be viewed by clicking the Logs tab in MBAM.
  • Copy&Paste the entire report in your next reply.
Extra Note:
If MBAM encounters a file that is difficult to remove,you will be presented with 1 of 2 prompts,click OK to either and let MBAM proceed with the disinfection process,if asked to restart the computer,please do so immediatly.

Hi,

Thank you for your help. The Symantec AntiVirus had come installed with the system but only for a limited period. Thereafter I installed AVG. However in the last 3 weeks since I had issues with the viruses I also installed Avira. I am not sure which AV to use as a resident one. I also have a cracked version os ESET Secutiry Business version, should I use that?

The problems that I am currently facing are that the PC is very slow, I also think there are a lot of residue files left of old softwares which I had installed and uninstalled. Is there any way to get rid of those?? One more thing I wanted to know, my brother uses the same computer and is hooked on to limewire and p2p softwares. What is the best precaution to make sure that I dont get infected with those downloads?

In a word no - it is illegal and we do not condone it here :)

Virus scan every download and then Antispyware scan the download before you even consider letting him run the programme - and even then be cautious. Better yet remove it :)

Download and Run the Norton Removal Tool

Then Uninstall either Avira or AVG, that should then cure some of your slowdowns

Very difficult as I have used neither but the reports I hear tend to be biased toward Avira

Now the best part of the day ----- Your log now appears clean :)

Double click OTMoveit once again and you should see a CleanUp! button, press that button, you may get prompted by your firewall that OTMoveit wants to contact the internet, allow this, a cleanup.txt will be downloaded, a message dialog will ask you if you want to proceed with the cleanup process, click Yes. This will delete all the tools you have downloaded plus itself

Now to get you off to a good start we will re-set your restore points so that all the bad stuff is gone for good. Then if you need to restore at some stage you will be clean. There are several ways to reset your your restore point but this is my method:

1. Select Start > All Programs > Accessories > System tools > System Restore.
2. On the dialogue box that appears select Create a Restore Point
3. Click NEXT
4. Enter a name e.g. Clean
5. Click CREATE

You now have a clean restore point, to get rid of the bad ones:

1. Select Start > All Programs > Accessories > System tools > Disk Cleanup.
2. In the Drop down box that appears select your main drive e.g. C
3. Click OK
4. The System will do some calculation and the display a dialogue box with TABS
5. Select the More Options Tab.
6. At the bottom will be a system restore box with a CLEANUP button click this
7. Accept the Warning and select OK again, the program will close and you are done
