I'm using windows XP 40 gig, system works great, using system tools defrag screen appears but defrag wll not start, I'm wondering if its because I only have about 8 gigs of memory left or is there another issue?

Do you mean that you only have 8 gigs of hard drive space left? That should be sufficient to run applications. Click Run and type diskmgmt.msc. That will open up the disk manager. Highlight the drive you want to defrag, right click and choose properties. Tools and select the defrag "analyze" option.

To find out your system specs, go to Control Panel then System. Under the general tab it will state what version of XP you have (Home or Pro, what service packs are installed) and at the bottom under "computer" it will tell you the type of processor or model of your computer and the amount of memory installed on your system.

Disk Defragmenter will refuse to defrag the drive properly if there's less than 15% space free, which in the case of a 40Gb drive which typically appears as 37.2Gb, means free space of about 5Gb to defrag properly.

Also Defrag will not run if other issues are scheduled to be done on the drive, such as Scandisk on the next boot or other utilities such as disk imaging programs for example.
