=======

In order to assist you, we need to see the log from an Ad-Aware SE 1.05 full system scan.

Important Note! Before performing a scan, be sure that you have the most recent definitions file by using WebUpdate. (Click on the Globe icon, Click connect, Click OK, Click Finish.) At this current point * SE1R40 20.04.2005 * is the most recent definition file.

Ad-Aware SE comes preconfigured with default options so we need you to make only one change. Please deselect "Search for negligible risk entries" as negligible risk entries (MRU's) are not considered to be a threat. This option can be changed when choosing your scan type.

Select "Perform Full System Scan" and press "Next". When the scan has completed, click "Show Logfile".

Please copy/paste the complete log file here using the reply button. Don't quarantine or remove anything at this time, just post a complete logfile. This sometimes takes 2-3 posts to get it all posted. You will know you are at the end when you see the "Summary of this scan" information has been posted.

When you have posted your log here, Team Lavasoft can advise on what to do next.

Please post back if you have any questions or other problems.

Good luck

Andy

i was infected with the about:blank hijacker and tried removing it on my own. i ran cwshredder, cleanup!, and adware in safe mode. then i deleted the .dll that kept coming up in HJT, and then i ran HJT and FIXED ALL things that popped up. that was a bad mistake on my part, as i am new to computers (i bought my first PC 1 year ago). now i cannot connect to the internet. right now i am posting from another computer in my house, that is hooked up to the same router, and my cable internet is working fine. but on the computer that was infected, nothing works! if anyone has any ideas on what may be causing this problem, and what i need to do to get my connection working again, i would really appreciate it.

oh btw, the about:blank is no longer coming up. so at least i was able to remove that hehe

sorry about that. i seem to have corrected most of the problem (my homepage is no longer set to about:blank, my IE does not launch to google.com upon startup, and the adult links can now be removed from my favorites list). however, i am stuck in windows classic theme. my IE seems a big sluggish as well. i tried scanning again with ad-aware and it found 0 objects. so that is why i am thinking i "fixed" an important file that did not need fixing (specifically navlogon.dll). here are the items that i fixed:

ok first of all, we're going to restore everything you removed with HJT. Yes...even the bad entries. Those are from an infection that is NOT gone now. There are other steps required to clean you up than simple HJT removal.

To restore the backups:
  • Open HiJackThis
  • Click Open the Misc Tools section
  • Click the Backups button
  • Place a check mark next to everything in that window
  • Click Restore
  • Click Yes
  • Reboot your computer
  • Re-open HiJackThis and post a new logfile for review.
after I see the new log I will post more instructions!

sorry, i'm new at this. i forgot to mention the steps that i already took. i downloaded cwsshredder, aboutbuster, cleanup!, and ad-aware. then i rebooted into safe-mode and ran cwshredder. afterwards, i ran cleanup, and then adaware. i made sure that ad-aware did a full scan. then i rebooted into normal mode and ran high jack this. i fixed the entries that i posted above, rebooted back into safemode and deleted C:\WINDOWS\system32\mgokh.dll. after that, i went back to normal mode, and i no longer experienced any problems. i got all of these steps from reading another thread that was posted (the .dll to delete was a different name, but i could recognize that it was the right one because of the "/sp.html" that followed it in the HJT log). do you think those steps would have cured the problem? or should i still restore everything and start from scratch? thank you very much for your time and advice.

If you followed all those steps, you may just have beaten this yourself! Follow the instructions I posted above to restore ONLY the O20 - Winlogon Notify: NavLogon - C:\WINDOWS\System32\NavLogon.dll by placing a check only next to that entry in the 'restore'.

After that, reboot your computer, and please let me check a fresh log to make sure you're good to go!

i sure hope so! well a problem i have is that i deleted my backup folder by accident! i confused it with the backup folder to an anti-virus program, and thought i was deleting the quarantine (i am new to PCs). i checked for the file named navlogon.dll and it still exists in my System32 folder. would you happen to know what exactly HJT removed when i told it to fix it? btw, i've also corrected my LAN problem as well hehe. here is my current HJT log though:

There is one more program we can remove. Please uninstall NetMeter by going to Start>Control Panel> Add/Remove programs. This *could* be the source of your trouble, but I am not sure yet. I do know that this is a Spyware program.

After you uninstall it, open HJT and scan. Place a check next to ONLY the following entry if it is still found:

O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [C:\Program Files\NetMeter\NetMeter.exe] C:\Program Files\NetMeter\NetMeter.exe

Reboot into Safe Mode by continually tapping the F8 key as the computer is booting. It will take you to a black screen and give you the option to enter safe mode.

Using windows, look to see if the following folder is found. If it is, right click and delete it:
C:\Program Files\NetMeter

reboot normally, and post a fresh HJT log. Also let me know if this resolved your desktop issues or not. If it does not, I am going to have someone who is an Expert in that area take a look to help us! :tazz:

ok hon! You *are* clean of Malware at this point. I have split off three of our posts from here into a new thread in the WinXP area, so you can get more specialized help in fixing your desktop. You can find your new thread Here

Now...........

Congratulations! :tazz: Your log is clean! ;)

The following is a list of tools and utilities that I like to suggest to people. This list is full of great tools and utilities to help you understand how you got infected and how to keep from getting infected again.
  • SpywareBlaster - Great prevention tool to keep nasties from installing on your system.
  • SpywareGuard - Works as a Spyware "Shield" to protect your computer from getting malware in the first place.
  • IE-SpyAd - puts over 5000 sites in your restricted zone so you'll be protected when you visit innocent-looking sites that aren't actually innocent at all.

  • Google Toolbar - Free google toolbar that allows you to use the powerful Google search engine from the bar, but also blocks pop up windows.
To find out more information about how you got infected in the first place and some great guidelines to follow to prevent future infections you can read this article by Tony Klein

I'm sorry I couldn't help you fix the desktop myself! But I am glad to have been able to help you with the Malware end of things. If there's ever anything else you need, feel free to start a new thread here, or pm me!
