Help, I'm new to this site and I hope someone can help me. My boyfriend ran the adaware program then suddenly I can't open any program files including my control panel with .EXE. My virus protection also disappeared. I ran a check online and it says that I have two low grade trojens. Is this why I can't open any programs? I don't know how to fix the problem. I went online and tried to download the EXE fixer but it won't let me run it because it says it needs to know what program to open with. I can however, open word documents and view my picture on the computer.

I have a Dell desktop 2400 with windows XP.

Can anyone help me?

Thanks in advance.
Robin

Try this:

Click "Start" >> "Run"

In Run type "cmd" without the quotes and click OK.

In command prompt type "assoc.exe=exefile" with the quotes, then hit Enter.

See if you can open any programs

Adaware(the program) can cause this sort of problem
if adaware program has caused this problem for you
then its your choice if you want to keep the program
spyware terminater is free with Real Time Protection Enabled
===============================================
Adaware occasionally does this when it finds an infection.
It just removes all the file type associations (even .exe files).
It may even occur that you cannot open regedit.
To fix this, open task manager (Ctrl-Alt-Del) and click on file - new task while holding down the control key.
This will bring up a cmd console. From there type regedit.exe and the registry editor should open.
If you have got this far, all is going good
Go to this webpage:

http://www.dougknox..../file_assoc.htm

Here you will find lots of registry files to restore the file associations.
Download the ones you need and import them into the registry through registry editor.
This should fix your PC enough so you can perform a repair or system restore.

In all reality, the only full solution is a format and re-installation of Windows here, or a full restore from a backup image (e.g. a brand name PC's recovery disk).

are you able to do a restore

C:\WINDOWS\system32\restore\rstrui.exe

copy and paste that in cmd window or paste in run

if you can choose a date or a time your computer was working good

GOOD LUCK....post the results

this has worked for one user in the bleeping computer forum
