Also - when using my plain CD drive to upload on I-tunes, a gravelly clicking noise is recorded at the start of each downloaded song.

Hi,
Basic stuff first... get a CD drive cleaner (to brush off the dust that may have accumulated on the lens.
Make sure that your CDs are clean as well.
Pick a CD that you KNEW worked recently, and try it.
If the yellow LED stays on, the it is having a hard time reading it.
(BTW, the computer sees the CD-RW and gets an aknowledge signal, so it reports that there is nothing wrong.)
The format of the CD is important too. If the data encoding is more dense than your drive can read, you will not be able to.
Also go to the manufacture's website and download the latest drivers.
There is always the possibility that your CD-RW is KAPUT... that does happen from time to time.
