I am so enormously frustrated and praying for your help. Yesterday, my computer booted up with the following message on the desktop over a blue background:

Security warning
A fatal error in EI has occurred (etc.)

I won't continue with the two-line message because by now I'm sure you know this pest. I ran Ad-Aware Se Personal, Spybot, Microsoft Antispyware. No good. I ran out and bought North Internet Security 2005, ran it. No help. Ran out and bought McAfeee Virusscan 2005. No help. The message continues to appear and I'm left to wonder what the malcode might by doing to my files. I'm at wits end and really, really hope you can help. I followed your instructions with regard to HijackThis. Please help!!!

Hi Scott

It looks like the programs you installed got rid of the main infecting files but left you with a messed up Desktop, there is a different pest in there - we'll get rid of that also. First of all, let's make sure there's nothing left behind - after downloading all the files I've linked for you, probably best to print these instructions to save you logging back in repeatedly.

Do this so you can see hidden files and folders - click here to download xphidden.zip. Extract xphidden.reg from the zip file and save it to the desktop. When done, double click the xphidden.reg and when asked to merge say yes.

Click here to download Pocket Killbox by Option^Explicit. Extract it from the zip file then double-click on Killbox.exe to run it.

Select the Delete on reboot option.

In the 'Full Path of File to Delete' box, copy and paste the following, clicking the 'Delete File' button (red circle with a white X) after pasting:

C:\wp.exe

It will prompt you to reboot, press the NO button. Instead, copy and paste the following and click the 'Delete File' button again:

C:\wp.bmp

When it prompts you to reboot this time, press the NO button again and repeat the process on all these files until the last one has been entered then press the YES button:

If you recieve an error message "PendingRenameOperation...." and your computer doesn't restart, please restart it manually.

Using Windows Explorer, navigate to the following and delete if found (please do NOT try to find them by "search" because they will not show up that way):

C:\Windows\System32\Log Files
C:\Program Files\Security IGuard

Next, click here to download smitfraud.reg and save it to the desktop. When done, double click the smitfraud.reg and click yes when asked to add to the registry.

Reboot your computer again.

Click here to download the Hoster. Extract it from the zip file into a folder and doubleclick on hoster.exe. Press "Restore Original Hosts" and press "OK". Exit the program.

Click here and download DelDomains.inf to your Desktop. Right-click on it and select 'Install'.

Click here to download System Security Suite. Extract it from the zip file into a folder and doubleclick on sss.exe. Check the boxes under the 'Items to Clear' tab and click 'Clear Selected Items'. You will be prompted to reboot, do so.

Nearly there. You are running HijackThis from the Desktop, please create a new folder for it and move the program into the new folder otherwise the backups it creates will be on your Desktop also.

Make sure that you have no browser windows open as this could prevent the fix from working properly. Open HijackThis, scan and when complete, remove the following entries by checking the box to the left and clicking 'fixed checked':
