yagi antenna(and general wifi questions)

I live next to a free wifi network, but my laptop(toshiba qosmio g15r) can only sometimes connect to this. I bought a yagi antenna from www.innovativedevice.com now i have a moderate amount of success. my question is, are there any way to fine tune such products or my computer to increase signal. Software to focus the antenna, settings on my computer that need adjusted. should my laptop wifi card be disabled while i am using the antenna. inside outside placement of antenna, any and all helpful hints welcomed. or any ways in general to increase speed of internet access
