HI Geeks! [XP with SP2 have all updates]

I noticed that my computer was acting funny. When I'd click on past sites using autocomplete form history, it would take me to my ebay login and not the site intended. so I ran my windows cleanup program and started kaspersky. It detected 2 trojans, but said the threats had been successfully neutralized. Then my kaspersky stopped running and I had to turn it back on. I didn't pause it or turn it off. Message from kaspersky:

detected: Trojan program .JS.Agent.baTrojan-Downloadern URL: http://www.hartnetwork.org....
detected: Trojan program Trojan-Downloader.JS.Agent.ban URL: http://www.hartnetwork.org....

I know you guys are very busy - Appreciate some help with this Please! thanks so much

I have 2 harddrives C and F - My F drive is from an older computer that I had installed on my newer pc. unsure if Hijackthis report shows both. Also, I am NOT using earthlink for anything.

Hi mango nj,

Welcome to Geeks to Go!

My name is Stamper19 and I will be helping you with your Malware problem. During the course of our interactions please be sure to follow all instructions carefully, and ask questions if you are unsure of how to proceed at any point. :)

----------------------------------------------------------------

Please download Deckard's System Scanner (DSS) to your Desktop.

  • Close all applications and windows.
  • Double-click on DSS.exe to run it, and follow the prompts.
  • The scan may take a minute. When the scan is complete, two text files will open - Main.txt and Extra.txt

Extra Note: When running DSS, some firewalls may warn that sigcheck.exe is trying to access the internet - please ensure that you allow sigcheck.exe permission to do so. Also, it may happen that your Antivirus flags DSS as suspicious. Please allow the Deckard's System Scanner to run and don't let your Antivirus delete it. (In this case, it may be better to temporary disable your Antivirus)

Post the main.txt and extra.txt from the C:\Deckard\System Scanner folder into your next reply.

----------------------------------------------------------------

Information to include in your next post:
  • main.txt and extra.txt from DSS

Hi mango nj,

Im not terribly surprised that it came up clean. These scanners are all a bit different and certain ones are better at finding certain things. Lets get rid of what Panda found and do another scan to make sure nothing is hiding out. Truth be told, Panda really only found one file. There was one registry entry that is likely orphaned and of no concern and lots of cookies, so there wasnt that much going on. We'll do a bit more digging.

----------------------------------------------------------------

Lets delete some ill mannered files.

Please download the OTMoveIt2 by OldTimer.
  • Save it to your desktop.
  • Please double-click OTMoveIt2.exe to run it. (Vista users, please right click on OTMoveit2.exe and select "Run as an Administrator")
  • Copy the file paths below to the clipboard by highlighting ALL of them and pressing CTRL + C (or, after highlighting, right-click and choose Copy):

    c:\winnt\system32\im64.dll
  • Return to OTMoveIt2, right click in the "Paste List of Files/Folders to be Moved" window (under the light blue bar) and choose Paste.
  • Click the red Moveit! button.
  • A log of files and folders moved will be created in the c:\_OTMoveIt\MovedFiles folder in the form of Date and Time (mmddyyyy_hhmmss.log). Please open this log in Notepad and post its contents in your next reply.
  • Close OTMoveIt2
If a file or folder cannot be moved immediately you may be asked to reboot the machine to finish the move process. If you are asked to reboot the machine choose Yes.

----------------------------------------------------------------

Please do an online scan with Kaspersky WebScanner

Click on Kaspersky Online Scanner

You will be promted to install an ActiveX component from Kaspersky, Click Yes.
  • The program will launch and then begin downloading the latest definition files:
  • Once the files have been downloaded click on NEXT
  • Now click on Scan Settings
  • In the scan settings make that the following are selected:
    • Scan using the following Anti-Virus database:
    Extended (if available otherwise Standard)
    • Scan Options:
    Scan Archives
    Scan Mail Bases
  • Click OK
  • Now under select a target to scan:Select My Computer
  • This will program will start and scan your system.
  • The scan will take a while so be patient and let it run.
  • Once the scan is complete it will display if your system has been infected.
    • Now click on the Save as Text button:
  • Save the file to your desktop.
  • Copy and paste that information in your next post.
----------------------------------------------------------------

Information to include in your next post:
  • OTMoveIt2 Log

Thanks Stamper! I'll get right on it. I have 1 question - I already have Kaspersky 7.0 installed on my pc. Will there be any conflict if I use the Kaspersky web scanner also? If not - should I disable on my pc before using online scanner? Soon as I hear back, I'll do the scan. I hope that didn't sound too idiotic :)

That question is not idiotic - in fact, it is quite thoughtful. The answer is No. Running the web scanner should not cause any sort of conflict with the Kav AV that you are running. You should be fine running the online scanner without changing anything currently running on the machine. Let me know if you have any problems.

Hey Stamper!!!! Good Morning!!!

I ran OTMOVE and followed the instructions. I copied the code in the quote box to the clipboard, pasted it in OTMOVE and clicked the red move it button. All was fine, but when I went to OTMOVE/MovedFiles folder.... and tried to open the dated folder in notepad - it was blank - no log to post. Although when I did a search on my system for im64.dll it was in that folder 922 bytes. Not sure what went wrong, pls advise and I'll give it another go.

C:\_OTMoveIt\MovedFile\04112008_213633\winnt\system32

I did notice that when I opened OTMOVE - there are two boxes 1-Unregister DLL's and OCX's and 2-Zip Files after move.
None were checked, so I left them blank since there was no instruction on this. Let me know where I go from here..... :)

'Mornin Mango,

Sounds like it did what we needed it to do. Go ahead and continue with the rest of the instructions and we'll see where it leaves us.

Hiya Mango,

Congrats - your logs are all clean :)

There are still a couple of things you should do for the sake of cleaning up.

---------------------------------------------------------------

Lets delete all the tools we downloaded.
  • Make sure you have an Internet Connection.
  • Double-click OTMoveIt2.exe to run it. (Vista users, please right click on OTMoveit2.exe and select "Run as an Administrator")
  • Click on the CleanUp! button
  • A list of tool components used in the Cleanup of malware will be downloaded.
  • If your Firewall or Real Time protection attempts to block OtMoveit2 to rech the Internet, please allow the application to do so.
  • Click Yes to beging the Cleanup process and remove these components, including this application.
  • You will be asked to reboot the machine to finish the Cleanup process. If you are asked to reboot the machine choose Yes.

----------------------------------------------------------------

Please clear and reset your system restore points.

To reset your restore points, please note that you will need to log into your computer with an account which has full administrator access. You will know if the account has administrator access because you will be able to see the System Restore tab. If the tab is missing, you are logged in under a limited account.

(Windows XP)
1. Turn off System Restore.
On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
Check Turn off System Restore.
Click Apply, and then click OK.

2. Reboot.

3. Turn ON System Restore.
On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
UN-Check *Turn off System Restore*.
Click Apply, and then click OK.

----------------------------------------------------------------

Otherwise, unless you have any questions, you are all set. Included below are some tips for keeping your computer malware free in the future.

Cheers,
Stamper :)

----------------------------------------------------------------

Now that you are clean, please follow these simple steps in order to keep your computer clean and secure:
  • Make your Internet Explorer more secure - This can be done by following these simple instructions:
    • From within Internet Explorer click on the Tools menu and then click on Options.
    • Click once on the Security tab
    • Click once on the Internet icon so it becomes highlighted.
    • Click once on the Custom Level button.
      • Change the Download signed ActiveX controls to Prompt
      • Change the Download unsigned ActiveX controls to Disable
      • Change the Initialize and script ActiveX controls not marked as safe to Disable
      • Change the Installation of desktop items to Prompt
      • Change the Launching programs and files in an IFRAME to Prompt
      • Change the Navigate sub-frames across different domains to Prompt
      • When all these settings have been made, click on the OK button.
      • If it prompts you as to whether or not you want to save the settings, press the Yes button.
    • Next press the Apply button and then the OK to exit the Internet Properties page.
  • Use an AntiVirus Software - It is very important that your computer has an anti-virus software running on your machine. This alone can save you a lot of trouble with malware in the future.

See this link for a listing of some online & their stand-alone antivirus programs:

Virus, Spyware, and Malware Protection and Removal Resources

  • Update your AntiVirus Software - It is imperitive that you update your Antivirus software at least once a week (Even more if you wish). If you do not update your antivirus software then it will not be able to catch any of the new variants that may come out.

  • Use a Firewall - I can not stress how important it is that you use a Firewall on your computer. Without a firewall your computer is succeptible to being hacked and taken over. I am very serious about this and see it happen almost every day with my clients. Simply using a Firewall in its default configuration can lower your risk greatly.

For a tutorial on Firewalls and a listing of some available ones see the link below:

    Understanding and Using Firewalls

  • Visit Microsoft's Windows Update Site Frequently - It is important that you visit http://www.windowsupdate.com regularly. This will ensure your computer has always the latest security updates available installed on your computer. If there are new updates to install, install them immediately, reboot your computer, and revisit the site until there are no more critical updates.

  • Update all these programs regularly - Make sure you update all the programs I have listed regularly. Without regular updates you WILL NOT be protected when new malicious programs are released.
Follow this list and your potential for being infected again will reduce dramatically.

here are some additional utilities that will enhance your safety

  • IE/Spyad <= IE/Spyad places over 4000 websites and domains in the IE Restricted list which will severely impair attempts to infect your system. It basically prevents any downloads (Cookies etc) from the sites listed, although you will still be able to connect to the sites.
  • MVPS Hosts file <= The MVPS Hosts file replaces your current HOSTS file with one containing well know ad sites etc. Basically, this prevents your coputer from connecting to those sites by redirecting them to 127.0.0.1 which is your local computer
  • Google Toolbar <= Get the free google toolbar to help stop pop up windows.
  • Winpatrol <= Download and install the free version of Winpatrol. a tutorial for this product is located here:

Hi STAMPER!!! All Done!!!! Thank you for your expertise and kind help....

I know you're ready to cut me loose, but I do have a few questions if you don't mind. Whenever I visit the geeks site, I like to learn as well as get my puter fixed.

1- Why did we move this file c:\winnt\system32\im64.dll and what exactly is this dll for?? I assume it's gone since it was in the OTMOVE folder and that application was deleted with cleanup. If it is gone will I need it for anything?

2 - I see that most of the things panda picked up were cookies, but what about the generic trojan and king porn [ewww] listed in log. Are those gone as well??

THANKS FOR TAKING THE TIME :)

Hi mango,

Hi STAMPER!!! All Done!!!! Thank you for your expertise and kind help....

Youre very welcome :)

I know you're ready to cut me loose, but I do have a few questions if you don't mind. Whenever I visit the geeks site, I like to learn as well as get my puter fixed.

Ask away! :)

1- Why did we move this file c:\winnt\system32\im64.dll and what exactly is this dll for?? I assume it's gone since it was in the OTMOVE folder and that application was deleted with cleanup. If it is gone will I need it for anything?

That is a malware related file. If you look back to the initial Panda scan you will see it is first on the list.

2 - I see that most of the things panda picked up were cookies, but what about the generic trojan and king porn [ewww] listed in log. Are those gone as well??

The king porn is an orphaned registry entry - nothing to worry about there. As for the generic trojan, there is no sign of it any of the recent logs so I suspect it is gone. However, just to be on the safeside lets make sure. If you already deleted OTMoveIt 2 then go ahead and download it again and then do the following:

Lets delete some ill mannered files.

    C:\Program Files\epicenter
