Alright I've still been thinking over these two laptops and was almost sure I'd get the XPS when i saw this deal on a Gateway. Now this Laptop will serve mostly for school but I'd never considered getting more of a desktop replacement.

The laptop I'm talking about is the Gateway® P-172S FX Edition
It's crazy cheap in comparison to the other two I've listed (price:power wise), and with the components it comes with I really wouldn't have much of a need to build a gaming PC for a few years (as much as I want too, the prospect of spending about 1900 on a good gaming/desktop replacement laptop seems better then spending 2500 on a desktop and laptop).

Bestbuy's running a good deal but I looked on Gateways website and was able to better customize it to my needs. Better processor, more ram, better warranty etc.

The one I built on the website had

C2D 2.0ghz
3 GB RAM 667 (dual channel)
8800m GTS 512mb GDDR3
1440 x 900 screen.

So it really has almost everything I need/want

plus a 3 year warranty/accidental warranty, 3yr lojack, and 3yr Battery limited warranty thing came to about 1800
I may take off the 3yr battery warranty and lower it to 17 and change.

With shipping and tax it comes to about 2000

The reason I'm bringing this up, other then to alert people to a potentially good deal, is that I'm questioning quality. While most of the reviews I'm reading say its good, I question how reputable Gateway is. I've always thought of Gateway and Compaq as less the reputable company's on quality (even though Compaq is merged with HP I still prefer HP over Compaq :-P).

Is Gateway an ok company? Are they reputable?

I know this is an old topic but I figured I'd finish it off by telling everybody what laptop I finally ended up getting (5 months later).

Went to bestbuy and got the Gateway m-6862 which was on sale/clearance. It was under 700 for:
Intel Centrino Core2Duo T5750 (2.0ghz)
4 GB RAM
ATI Radeon Mobility HD2600 (better then 8600GS alittle less then 8600GT, supposedly if overclocked its on par with GT)
250GB 5400 RPM HDD
Wireless Card with A/B/G/N
Windows Vista Home Premium 64 bit

Didn't pay the price on the website - instore sale :)
