the easiest way to reset the devices that have dropped to the Programmed Input/Output transfer mode is to uninstall the affected channel and let it reinstall on reboot...this effectively removes and reinstalls the devices assigned to that channel


change the Transfer Mode to "DMA if Available" using the drop down menus


Good points wannabe1. And even if it goes back to a dma mode, keep an eye on it to see if it changes back to pio.

That drop down menu must be set to 'DMA if Available' for sure.

You could open the computer and disconnect the cd/dvd's also and see what difference that makes. If someone doesn't know which is master and slave. Then replug them one at a time and pitch the one causing problems if it can't be solved by uninstalling the drive or channel.
