On limited user accounts, ctfmon.exe creates a "failed to initialize" error message every time limited users log in. After reading the description of the file, I'm not really sure why it's running at startup in the first place. I don't think it's an infection, but better safe than sorry. I wanted to make sure I didn't overlook something stupid in the HijackThis log. Also, I'm interested in using ComboFix for a more detailed report since HijackThis doesn't seem to be reporting anything too dangerous. I have already attempted to use ComboFix (AFTER backing up: I know using it unsupervised is a no-no but I was just curious :P) to install the Recovery Console and generate a logfile as instructed in Bleeping Computer, but the logfile was not generated (though ComboFix dumped a bunch of other crud on my hard drive). Considering the power of the tool, I decided not to press my luck any further and talk to you guys. Should I consider myself clean and ask around for XP help, or do I have something nasty I'm not aware of?

If you have the ComboFix log, then post that. It should be in C:\ComboFix

Please do an online scan with Kaspersky WebScanner

Click on Kaspersky Online Scanner and click Accept

You will be prompted to install an ActiveX component from Kaspersky, Click Yes.
  • The program will launch and then begin downloading the latest definition files:
  • Once the files have been downloaded click on NEXT
  • Now click on Scan Settings
  • In the scan settings make that the following are selected:
    • Scan using the following Anti-Virus database:
    Extended (if available otherwise Standard)
    • Scan Options:
    Scan Archives
    Scan Mail Bases
  • Click OK
  • Now under select a target to scan:Select My Computer
  • This will program will start and scan your system.
  • The scan will take a while so be patient and let it run.
  • Once the scan is complete it will display if your system has been infected.
    • Now click on the Save as Text button:
  • Save the file to your desktop.
  • Copy and paste that information in your next post.

Thank you for your reply. I didn't find any .log in the ComboFix directory, though I suppose I could delete the directory and try again. I first used ComboFix to install the Windows Recovery Console as directed here. After using it a second time to obtain the log, however, the interface didn't initialize and a blue command prompt just popped up and exited. I suspect this might have something to do with ComboFix's subsequent strange behavior.

Also, I'm having trouble running the Kaspersky scanner since the machine in question is a high-performance laptop and has been overheating lately. I need to get around to blowing some compressed air through the intake vents. I'd open it up and clean the whole thing, but I'm a good deal less comfortable doing that with a laptop than with a desktop. I should have a log for you within 48 hours.

Had to boot in safe mode this morning after running Kaspersky overnight (just got your last post now). After I get the system relatively stable again I'll try the System Scanner. That's worked in the past so it should be all right.

Did you get Kaspersky to run ?

1. Please re-open HiJackThis and choose do a system scan only. Check the boxes next to ONLY the entries listed below(if present):

R0 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Start Page = about:blank
O2 - BHO: (no name) - {7E853D72-626A-48EC-A868-BA8D5E23E045} - (no file)
O9 - Extra button: (no name) - {CD67F990-D8E9-11d2-98FE-00C0F0318AFE} - (no file)

2. Now close all windows other than HiJackThis, including browsers, so that nothing other than HijackThis is open, then click Fix Checked. A box will pop up asking you if you wish to fix the selected items. Please choose YES. Once it has fixed them, please exit/close HijackThis.

Open Notepad and Copy (Control+C) and Paste (Control+V) the following code into the Notepad window.

@echo off
dir "C:\WINDOWS\system32\773F67">C:\peek.txt
start C:\peek.txt
del peek.bat

Click on 'File' then 'Save As'
In the Save in drop down box select Desktop
In the File name box type in peek.bat
In the Save as type drop down box select All Files
Close Notepad.

Now, find peek.bat on your Desktop and Double click it
A window will open and close, do not be concerned this is normal.

Please download ATF Cleaner by Atribune.
This program is for XP and Windows 2000 onlyDouble-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
Under Main choose: Select All

Did you get Kaspersky to run ?

If not do this

Please download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware from Here or Here

Double Click mbam-setup.exe to install the application.
  • Make sure a checkmark is placed next to Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, then click Finish.
  • If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
  • Once the program has loaded, select "Perform Full Scan", then click Scan. Check all the boxes and click Start Scan
  • The scan may take some time to finish,so please be patient.
  • When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
  • Make sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
  • When disinfection is completed, a log will open in Notepad and you may be prompted to Restart.(See Extra Note)
  • The log is automatically saved by MBAM and can be viewed by clicking the Logs tab in MBAM.
  • Copy&Paste the entire report in your next reply.
Extra Note:
If MBAM encounters a file that is difficult to remove, you will be presented with 1 of 2 prompts, click OK to either and let MBAM proceed with the disinfection process,if asked to restart the computer, please do so immediatly.

Also tell me how your PC is running

I'm afraid that scan caused an overheat as well as the Kaspersky, which I still haven't gotten to run. It'll be a little while until I can do something about the ventilation, though it's affecting everything else now too, even booting. At least I assume that's what it is. In general it's a little sluggish, which is weird since I used Process Explorer to kill everything I didn't want running in msconfig. Then again, 512 megs of ram probably isn't helping. But that was plenty five years ago when we got it... is bloat really that bad? Processor is fine (3.2 Ghz with Hyperthreading), HDD is 5200 rpm. Btw, I just found out that I should disable write-caching if I expect power outages to avoid corruption. That will probably slow everything down further, but at least I can avoid data loss. Which may be part of my problem, for all I know. Anyway, I'll try to get the vents cleaned as soon as possible.

No worry if you can't get it to run

This isn't a malware issue, I think you would be better off posting in the Windows XP forum

Let me know if you do get it running
