changin hard drives

ok i have in my computer a seagate U series 5 16HDS 40 GB hard drive and its too small, so i recently bought a new one on ebay very cheap. problem is that the one ive just bought is 160GB but a Maxtor diamondmax plus 9 SATA 150 HDD, i went to install the new one and the pin system is completly different. would i be able to change the data cable from the mother board for a different one to fit the SATA hard drive?? hope someone can help me please, thanks.

I assume your old drive is an IDE/ATA, which is not the same interface as a SATA. You would need a SATA controller in order to use the disk.
