Hi,
My son's friend got into my computer and infected it with some sort of virus. HE said he was prompted to download some ATX file in order to view a "u tube" and when he tried to close the prompt, he couldn't. So he accepted the Active X download. Upon finding out, I ran norton and spybot and three or four files were identified as virus infected and either quarantined or partially fixed.

Norton identified one as Trojan downloader.win32.zlob.jzq
another was identified as not-virus-hoax. win16.pornovir

Once infected, my CPU was running at almost 100% even at idle and it would take a couple of minutes just to load windows xp. I followed the removal guide and ran system cleaner, system restore, AVG anti-spyware, spybot, spyware doctor and panda activescan, including doing windows update. Panda activescan identified 4 files infected, which were joke files so i deleted them and AVG came back clean.

Can you please tell me if my computer is still infected or cleaned ? I am afraid to do any commercial transactions on this computer until i am certain it is clean.

Here is the hyjack this log. Thank you in advance.

Welcome to GTG.

Let's take a deeper look and see if anything else is found.

Download Deckard's System Scanner at http://deckard.geekstogo.com/dss.exe or http://www.techsuppo...Deckard/dss.exe and save it to your desktop.

- Close all applications and windows.
- Double-click on DSS.exe to run it, and follow the prompts.
- When the scan is complete, two text files will open - Main.txt and Extra.txt

Post the main.txt (copy and paste it in your reply) and extra.txt (attach it in your next reply) from the C:\Deckard\System Scanner folder into your next reply.

Download SmitfraudFix at http://siri.urz.free...mitfraudFix.zip and extract the content (a folder named SmitfraudFix) to your desktop.

Open the SmitfraudFix folder. Double-click on smitfraudfix.cmd and select option #1 - Search by typing 1 and press Enter. A text file will appear, which lists infected files (if present). Please copy/paste the content of that report into your next reply.

IMPORTANT: Do NOT run option #2 or any other option until you are directed to do so!

NOTE: process.exe is detected by some antivirus programs as a Risk Tool. It is not a virus. If you get this detected, ignore it.

Download the Flash Disinfector and run it. Follow the prompts. Your flash drive may be infected from what I see in the log files.

Go to http://www.bleepingc...to-use-combofix and follow the instructions on how to install the Recovery Console and run ComboFix. Go through all the steps until posting the log part. Post the combofix log here.

I ran the flash disinfector and it seemed to "perk" up my computer performance. I also downloaded combofix and thought I did the xp recovery console, but the log says I didn't so i guess i didn't do it right. Thankfully, my computer is still functioning so no need for the recovery console. Here is the combofix log.

You can delete this file -> C:\WINDOWS\Internet Logs\xDB20.tmp

Did you download the recovery console utility from the Microsoft site (skip the part for the Windows CD)? I recommend installing it anyway. This will NOT recover anything for you. With the amount of malware floating around lately, it's best to install this console for emergency cases...like when Windows won't boot up properly.

Good job. Your log is clean.

To help prevent future spyware infections, read the Anti-Spyware Tutorial and use the tools provided.

Are there any problems now? If none, go to Start->Run and type in Combofix /u and hit OK to remove it. You should be set to go.

Thanks a million greynight. Computer is as perky as ever. Really needed the cleaning.

I've deleted the internet log file as requested. I've also removed the combofix program.

As to the recovery module, i went into the microsoft link provided by Bleeping computer here http://support.microsoft.com/kb/310994 but all i can find was a download for how to obtain windows xp setup boot disk, and no recovery console.
In any event, I downloaded the setup book disk to my desktop. Now i have an icon under desktop with the following details:

Windowsxp-KB3109
94-sp2-home-boot
Disk-enu.exe

Is the recovery console located under this icon?

No problem. Glad it's running smotthly again :)

Yes, that's the one. Make sure you get this one which is for XP Home with SP2 installed. Just drag and drop it into Combofix. If it produces another log for you, just close it out and run combofix /u again to remove it. Now the recovery console is installed. What this does is add another boot option when you startup the computer. You don't need to worry about this. We will only ask you to use this if Windows has problems (like failing to bootup). It can come in quite handy to do repairs if needed :)

If there are no other issues, post back one more time to confirm all is well. I will mark this topic as solved afterwards.

I downloaded the microsoft.com file as you suggested and dragged it over the combofix icon on my desktop. A while later, a message came up verifying the recovery console was installed properly.

Anyway, i ran combofix u and removed the icon on desktop. The microsoft download icon is still on my desktop. Do i have to delete it or leave it?

Otherwise, no other issues so thanks a million for all your help. Really appreciate it.

You may delete it now. Don't be alarmed when you see two entries when you power up your computer. It should default to Windows XP. No need to touch it....you may wait or just hit Enter key to go straight to Windows XP.

No problem Ken. Glad to help out :)
