For those of you looking for the reason for this you may not need blame the hard drive. I just found the same problem on a HP pavilion a1410n. The computer would boot perfectly if there was no mouse plugged in. With a mouse I got a black page with ntoskrnl file corrupt or missing. The problem was solved by shutting down the computer, unplug everything, removed side cover, unplugged all USB connectors, IDE cable, media card reader, etc. from the motherboard. Booted up with only harddrive (SATA), keyboard and mouse. Found out by adding one item at a time, repeating until failure, somehow, someone jammed the USB port on the front panel media card reader and it was shorted out. By leaving that unplugged from the motherboard the computer boots and runs perfectly. I suspect that the error code is generated by the SMART program as it sees the short circuit as a drive motor problem, and is predicting failure to come. HP got the front panel replacement to me in 4 days for less money than a McDonalds lunch for 3. When this one pooped it also disabled the PS2 mouse port. You may have to go into settings to enable it again. Good luck.
