ok..from the top: I am unable to sign into my msn messenger, check my hotmail, update windows, or automatically update my spyware software.

At this point I have managed to manually update and run bothe spybot S & D and adaware SE. Those scans are now coming out clean.

I have run 3 different on line scans : Microtrend, Bitdefender, and Panda.

Panda has yielded some uncleanable problems with my registry:

I have downloaded and manually updated coolweb shredder...that comes up clean.

Upon rebooting: My desktop comes up with my clock, quickly followed by pest patrol's icon. a message box then pops up with the message: Invalid Backweb Application ID 137903 with an ok button. At this point there is a LONG pause (3 or 4 times the normal) before my internet connection icons come on. It is in this pause that I suspect SOMETHING is running and giving me problems.

Surfing around, trying to anwer my own questions, I stumbled upon something that MIGHT just be the key...if not the answer.

I was researching Winpatrol as a tool to help with spyware. When I tried to download it I got this error message:

16-bit MS-DOS Subsystem
path to the program that you are trying to start or install
C:\Windows\System32\Autoexec.nt The system file is not suitable for running MS-DOS and Microsoft Windows applications. Choose 'Close' to terminate the application.

I then followed this link for more info:

http://support.micro...kb;en-us;324767

Now...in trying to fix this problem myself, both msn messenger and windows update have sections stressing that they use 16 bit encryption and that this must be turned on for them to work. If my file is missing or damaged....

so now: are there malware programs that specifically remove, disable, or cripple this file?

There are instructions there for replacing the file, but they require a system disk...which I don't believe I have (altho I MAY be able to create them) . I have taken no action on this yet, but will wait for your oppinion/instructions

And finally here is a Hijack log, taken directly after my last re-boot:
