Hello,

I'm trying to help out a friend who caught the smitfraud trojan. It's been a pain as she is remote so I have been helping her over the phone and using VNC. She had the typical smitfraud symptoms, the background ad, the triangle on the taskbar etc. I think I wiped it out but in the process also found lots of other viruses which have been deleted. There is still something hanging out somewhere as there are still some problems, most notably the inability to run NAV in normal mode. Whatever it is also prevents adaware from running as well as the online scanners from Panda and Mcafee, however Spybot can run and I have cleaned out everything it found. When you attempt to run the online scanners activex will not work and there is no message on the information bar where you would normally click to install it. This particular virus seems to protect itself as when I delete related files they come back with different names, nmmkmidx.exe is what it is called at the moment. There is another file in the system32 folder called vnetbsh.dll that I'm pretty sure is related to the whole thing. I trashed it too but it also rose from the dead on reboot. At one point there was a reference to thun32.dll but I removed it from the registry and deleted it also, but I don't know if this particular virus/trojan is related to it. Norton now runs clean in safe mode and Spybot does in normal mode. Most cleaning tools I've tried seem to be suppressed by whatever this thing is. If you have time to look at the log below and make and suggestions I'd appreciate it.

One other thing, when you first boot the PC there are two instances of iexplorer.exe in the running processes list although IE has not been manually loaded and is not visibly running....

No need to apologize, I know you do this mostly out of the goodness of your heart so I appreciate it. Since I posted my original message I ran cwshredder which found a bunch of stuff and eliminated it but the same symptoms persist. I updated Norton again and ran another scan in safe mode but it found nothing. I'm pretty sure the vnetbsh.dll file is related to the issue and probably another file called wp.dbl which also comes back after deletion. Thanks in advance for any pointers you can offer.

Did you "fix" anything in HiJackThis prior to posting the log? There are some items that are still on your computer even though they aren't in the log and now it's going to make it harder to find the files that need to go.

Did she download RealVNC (process used to allow 'remote control' of your desktop from another computer either on a network or across the internet. If you use VNC to remote control on to your PC you should leave this process running.)

Open HiJackThis. Click on "none of the above, just start the program", then click on "config" (bottom right), then click on "Misc Tools".

Click on the button that says "Delete a file on reboot". Browse to this file:

C:\WINDOWS\system32\nmmkmidx.exe

Click on that file (nmmkmidx.exe), then click "open".

Answer "yes" to the 'are you sure' prompt, then click "yes" to restart your computer (if it doesn't automatically restart please restart it).

Hi there,

Yes I did "fix" some entries that I thought didn't need to be there, sorry if that confused the issue. I think I did that a few days ago with both HijackThis and Cwshredder as I mentioned once. I also ran the overall product that contains Cwshredder, Spy-somethingorother, and it seemed to detect and remove a ton of stuff. I can't remember what I did at what point though, I'm getting old.

I had her put VNC on there so I could look at her PC, when this is all over I will have her uninstall it to be safe. I will try your suggestion of deleting the file using HT, but I have already done that with Killbox a few times and the virus just comes back with a different name each time, including mobfaxa.exe and igmping6.exe as well as some other nonsense names.

My guess is that it has a buddy file somewhere looking out for it, and when it's gone it gets recreated with a different name. Also, when you attempt to end the task of the same name it just comes right back. I'll try your thing though and let you know what happens.

Save the file to your desktop and double click l2mfix.exe. Click the Install button to extract the files and follow the prompts, then open the newly added l2mfix folder on your desktop. Double click l2mfix.bat and select option #1 for Run Find Log by typing 1 and then pressing enter. Ok!! I think we found the "buddy" files!

Follow these instructions exactly otherwise it won't work!

I need you to copy all of the Killbox instructions below and paste them into Notepad and save it for use while in Safe Mode.

* Please download the Killbox by Option^Explicit. *In the event you already have Killbox, this is a new version that I need you to download.
Unzip it to the desktop but do NOT run it yet.

* Please reboot into Safe Mode by restarting your computer and tapping F8 continuously as your computer is booting up until a menu appears. use your up arrow key to highlight "Safe Mode", then hit enter

* Once in Safe Mode, please run Killbox.

* Select "Delete on Reboot".

* Open the Notepad file where you saved these instructions earlier, and copy the file names below to the clipboard by highlighting them and pressing CTRL + C:

* Click the red-and-white "Delete File" button. Click "Yes" at the Delete on Reboot prompt. Click "No" at the Pending Operations prompt.
