PCI QUESTIONS

So, I decided to upgrade my computer buy purchasing an 8600gt. Low and behold, I go to fit the sucker in there and boom! It doesn't fit because my mobo is only PCI and not PCI express. HOWEVER, on my motherboard I see a place where it appears a PCI-E slot could possibly fit. There is nothing there though except some metal that outlines a PCI-E express slot. I was thinking, is there anyway I can put an adapter in or something to fit my 8600gt PCI express card????????????? If this is not possible, can some one tell me a good PCI card. Thanks so much.
