Good afternoon. I have a problem loading windows 98se. After cleaning up some stuff on my c drive all of a sudden windows won't load anymore. I'm sure i deleted something i wasn't supposed too.

Hope you can help.

Here is the error message i get:

Error: Memory manager not detected
creative SB16 emulation driver requires EMM386 or similar
creative SB16 emulation not loading
cannot find Win.com uable to continue loading windows.

I hope i didn't mess up too bad.

I'm not totally sure what i did. I do know that i some how deleted the Win.com file and something that has to do with Sound Blaster. When i Google the error i find that one possible solution is to extract the Win.com file from my windows 98 disc. I have been unable to do this so far. You mentioned a system restore?

Can you possibly help me with the extaction of the file or the system restore?

Are you able to boot into safe mode? (To enter safe mode tap the F8 key while the computer is starting. Select Safe Mode from the menu.) If so, disable startup items using msconfig (Start -> Run, type msconfig).

If not able to boot in safemode, create a bootdisk http://www.bootdisk.com. Start your computer with this disk in the floppy drive and at the command prompt type c:\windows\command\scanreg /restore. Select a date before the problem began.

Wow i guess i really messed up this time. I tried to start up in safe mode and got this:

The following file is missing or corruped.

C:\windows\HIMEM>SYS
C:\windows\DBLBUFF.SYS
C:\windows\IFSHLP.SYS

also i created the boot disk and when it prompted i "started computer with CD rom"
and at prompt entered" c:\windows\command\scanreg/restore and it said "Bad command"

i'm still trying.

i think you need to restart computer with floppy drive not cdrom drive

I only get three option when i start with the boot disk.

1. start computer with CD rom support
2. start computer without CD rom support
3. View the help folder.

i'm still trying to extract the file.

can you tell me if this is correct?

The source path: Win98_25.cab
File to extract: Win.com or Win.cnf
Destination path: C:\Windows folder

or is the source path: D:\Win98?

Sorry for the confusion. I have never done anything like this before.

you want to extract the Win98_25.cab file which contains Win.cnf file. You will rename this file to win.com

the destination path is C:\windows

I'm still not able to get it done. I keep getting the error: cannot open file win98_25.cab.

o.k since the file i want is on the cd rom and the disc is in the D: drive wouln't the source path be D:\win98? the file i want to extract is "win98-25.cab" or "win.com" or Win.cnf? and the destination path is "C:\windows.. I have treid several combinations and nothing seems to be working. I'm so frustarted, i'vse been at it for 2 days.

should i be coinsidering a fresh install of windows98 or even upgrading(finally ) to xp?

1.) ok put the bootdisk into the A drive and then restart Windows.
2.) When it loads, select Start computer with CD-ROM support
3.) enter your Windows 98 Cd-rom into the cd-rom drive.
4.) Type ext and then hit enter and follow the on screen instructions.

You want to extract Win98_25.cab and rename the win.cnf file to win.com by typing the following line:

ren c:\windows\win.cnf c:\windows\win.com

restart your computer

alright. I managed to get the file but the rename command is not working.. it turns out that the source path was "E:\win98" and i extracted the "win.cnf" file to the "C:\windows" then at the prompt entered "ren c:\windows\win.cnf c:\windows\win.com and i get the error "invalid parameter.

I think i actually made some progress.

any ideas about the rename command?

Good Morning everyone. First let me thank you for all of your help. It was all great advice and i wish i was able to make it work,however i was unsucessful in extracting and renameing my win.com file. I will say that i learned alot of useful knowledge that will come in handy when i build my new computer.(maybe i'll get something for fathers day.)

I'm going to give up on the win.com file and ask for some help in re-installing my windows98se. Hopefully this will fix the problem. Also can you tell me what would be some of the pros and cons of a fresh install?.

How important is step 2 in your instructions for re installing windows 98se.

The reason i ask is because i cant get into windows.

Well without step two, you can't perfom steps three or five. So I'd say pretty important. Windows 98 doesn't like installing over a previous version. It's important to remove your old installation first.
