Explorer.exe problem

Hi if anyone can help me with this i would be so pleased. For the past week now whenever I log into my computer all that appears is the wallpaper, i press alt ctr dlt and run the task explorer.exe which finally brings up start menu and desktop icons but this lasts for only 30 seconds and its gone again and doesnt give me enough time to go into c: or anything, i can still access internet. But every 10 seconds the taskbar and start menu come and go. I have AVG and ran a virus test and it came up with a few things which I have removed but still this explorer.exe problem remains.

Please help as it has made my PC unusable
