Hi I wonder if anyone can help me?

Quite recently I have been having problems starting up my computer. The first thing I see when I turn it on is not the Windows loading screen as normal but a black screen with white writing on it and the American Megatrends logo in the top left hand corner. This page seems to show the results of a quick system check but I could be wrong! I have copied below what the screen says:

Checking NVRAM - No NVRAM
480MB OK
It auto detects Pri Master/ Sec Master and Mass storage devices
CMOS Checksum Bad
CMOS Date/Time not set

This is then followed by two options: F1 leads to the set up screen and F2 loads default values (which is the one I use to get past this screen). The worst that happens is that it resets the time and date but I still think it could be fixed!

I'm new to this forum so I hope my post is correct. I followed the instructions to list the hijackthis files below. I also did a quick search and found others had had the same problem so I hope it's easily fixed!

All help is much appreciated!

MarkHol

It looks like it's just your CMOS gone kaput. So try F1 to enter the setup and manually set the time and date to be correct. It should let you in. Reboot the computer, check the setup again. If the time/date have gone back to 1970, You need a new CMOS battery.

Please repost with your results, as well as your computer model or motherboard model.

Also, if you could remove the HJT log from your above post: it just takes up room and (fortunately) we don't need it right now. For future reference, we have a special forum for HJT logs.

I'd say it's the battery as well. A lot of people I know are paranoid to remove the case, but it's easier than you think. Look for a circular battery. There's usually an indentation to flip it out. You think the thinkers of our time would figure out how to put a rechargeable one in, eh!

Hi! Thanks for your replies Admiral and Damien Kane.

I followed your instructions to enter set up and manually change the time and date. Having done that the date and time were indeed changed but not to what I had entered. The time was one hour out and the date read 4th January 2008 instead of 18th April 2008. I'm not sure, however, from this point how I am meant to access that same set-up screen again as I only get the American Megatrends screen up once a day (the first time I turn on the computer). I. When I reboot the computer the only option is to press F10 for recovery but that is the blue screen which is different isn't it? Any suggestions. I can always just try it again tomorrow?

My computer model is a Mesh Matrix M2600+.

Thanks again for your help!

If your setup is not holding your date/time, you should replace the battery. If you look inside the computer, up above the processor, you'll see a small silver watch-sized coin cell battery. Take it out, and bring it to a battery or watch store, see if they have one just like it. Then put the new one in where the old one was, and you'll be good to go.

Hi Admiral!

Sorry my reply was so long in coming. I've been away on holiday.

I did try the advice below again and this time it did change everything to the correct time and date but again did not hold this information and I had to enter it all again the following day. As you say this does sound like the battery problem and I know the one you are talking about too. I'll start shopping around to find a replacement, then I should be fine. I'm just glad it's nothing more serious!

Thanks very much again for you expert help!

MarkHol :)
