This is not a HUGE problem but it gets pretty annoying. When my roomie turns on his computer while I am already surfing the net, my internet will drop. then after a minute or two come back on. It always happens if he or I turns on our computer while the other person already has their internet up and running. This also goes for us using cell-phones in the house.

I assume its some settings/config with the router but not sure which one specifically.

We are using a Linksys router with comcast HSI. Thanks for helping.

Hi Mr Niceguy.

There are a couple of things to check here:

1. Check that the Internet Protocol (IP) address range of your router is set correctly
2. Check that the local IP address of the computers are set differently

To check the IP address settings of the computers. Do the following:

Click on the start menu, then select run
In the window that pops up, type cmd and press enter
When the command prompt appears, type in ipconfig then press enter
There is a line that will tell you the IP address of each computer

If they turn out to be different, then I would suggest checking the linksys website for a router firmware upgrade, as this maybe a known issue to them with that particular router. If you read the release notes on each version, it will tell you of any issues that the new firmware fixes.

Be sure to follow the instructions carefully when it comes to upgrading the firmware. If you do it incorrectly, or update it with the wrong firmware/version number, it can render the router unusable!

2. Check that the local IP address of the computers are set differently

This is done with DHCP.
If the router is configured to give IP addresses Automatically (which I highly recommend) the IP addresses will be different.

Mr. NiceGuy, Please follow the steps below to give us some more information.

  • Go to Start then hit Run.
  • In the box type "CMD"
  • when the black box appears type "ipconfig/all"
  • when the information appears right click the box and hit "mark"
  • Select all the information and hit "CTRL + C"
  • Open a Reply and hit "CTRL + V" (Or save it into notepad)

Please do this with both computers.

Regards,
Olrik
