I have a Gateway Performance 750 and would like to upgrade the processor. Here are the specks that I have now:
746 MHz Intel Pent. II
256 RAM
XP SP2

I want a faster processor but don\\\'t really know where to begin to make sure I have one that is compatible

The odds of even finding a compatible processor for that motherboard are slim to none. Being that old, it will probably only be upgradeable to a P3 & you would be better off buying a whole new computer.

Available for next to nothing on eBay.
But in the grand scale of things, probably not worth it because you won't notice any difference.

If it only has a 100mhz front side bus speed, which is pretty likely, the fastest processor you can get is 850mhz, if it's a slot-a processor. If it has a 133mhz FSB speed you could go to over 1ghz. But your memory will have to be 133mhz too. You could go to the Gateway site and see what the specs are, or you may be able to Google the motherboard part # +manual to find a manual for it and find out more.

And to think i just sold a pentium 4 2.4 computer with a 160 Gig HD and a gig of PC3200 memory and a Nvidia FX5200 video card for $150 just because i was tired of it sitting in the computer room doing nothing.
