Im trying to clear my mother's computer of some virus/spyware she has managed to get on here. There is a window that has the title "Messenger Service" that tries to tell me that my registry is damaged and corrupted and then to go to www.registryclearnerxp.com to immediately download some fix. No matter what I do to close the window it will come back.

My hijack log...

Hi there can you please go to this site and download then run shoot the messenger http://www.grc.com/s...hemessenger.htm ensure that messenger is disabled as per the instructions on the page.

THEN

Please download Deckard's System Scanner (DSS) and save it to your Desktop.
  • Close all other windows before proceeding.
  • Double-click on dss.exe and follow the prompts.
  • When it has finished, dss will open two Notepads main.txt and extra.txt -- please copy (CTRL+A and then CTRL+C) and paste (CTRL+V) the contents of main.txt and extra.txt in your next reply.

Hi!

Thanks for the quick reply. I ran the shoot the messenger program and the messenger service is now safely disabled (although i still get that pesky pop up - was it supposed to go away?)

My moms computer is very old - its my old computer from many years ago... I should probably just buy her a new one but as long as it still allows her to check her email - i say why bother?

So i ran the other program you linked to and these were the results...

Thanks for the quick reply. I ran the shoot the messenger program and the messenger service is now safely disabled (although i still get that pesky pop up - was it supposed to go away?)

That was the original theory - however, I still see nothing apparent so I would like a deeper look

Download OTScanit to your Desktop and double-click on it to extract the files. It will create a folder named OTScanIt on your desktop.
  • Close ALL OTHER PROGRAMS.
  • Open the OTScanit folder and double-click on OTScanit.exe to start the program.
  • Check the box that says Scan All User Accounts
  • Check the Radio buttons for Files/Folders Created Within 90 Days and Files/Folders Modified Within 90 Days
  • Under Additional Scans check the following:
    • Reg - BotCheck
    • Reg - Desktop Components
    • Reg - Disabled MS Config Items
    • File - Additional Folder Scans
    • File - Purity Scan
  • Now click the Run Scan button on the toolbar.
  • Let it run unhindered until it finishes.
  • When the scan is complete Notepad will open with the report file loaded in it.
  • Click the Format menu and make sure that Wordwrap is not checked. If it is then click on it to uncheck it.
Please attach the log in your next post.

To attach a file, do the following:
  • Click Add Reply
  • Under the reply panel is the Attachments Panel
  • Browse for the attachment file you want to upload, then click the green Upload button
  • Once it has uploaded, click the Manage Current Attachments drop down box
  • Click on Posted Image to insert the attachment into your post

No problems on the time as long as you keep me posted :)

Whatever it is, it is very cleverly hidden. So lets try the hammer approach and see what that shakes loose

Please download ComboFix from Here or Here to your Desktop.

**Note: In the event you already have Combofix, this is a new version that I need you to download. It is important that it is saved directly to your desktop**
  • Please, never rename Combofix unless instructed.
  • Close any open browsers.
  • Close/disable all anti virus and anti malware programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix.

    -----------------------------------------------------------

    • Very Important! Temporarily disable your anti-virus, script blocking and any anti-malware real-time protection before performing a scan. They can interfere with ComboFix or remove some of its embedded files which may cause "unpredictable results".
    • Click on this link to see a list of programs that should be disabled. The list is not all inclusive. If yours is not listed and you don't know how to disable it, please ask.

      -----------------------------------------------------------

    • Close any open browsers.
    • WARNING: Combofix will disconnect your machine from the Internet as soon as it starts
    • Please do not attempt to re-connect your machine back to the Internet until Combofix has completely finished.
    • If there is no internet connection after running Combofix, then restart your computer to restore back your connection.

    -----------------------------------------------------------

  • Double click on combofix.exe & follow the prompts.
  • When finished, it will produce a report for you.
  • Please post the "C:\ComboFix.txt" along with a new HijackThis log for further review.
**Note: Do not mouseclick combofix's window while it's running. That may cause it to stall**

I wanted to close all the browser windows for this combofix thing so i clicked through that [bleep] popup a few times (it just keeps bringing up a new one) and then it finally stopped so i ran the program. When I reopened the browser to post this the popup didnt come back. hmmmm imagine that? I wonder if that shootthemessenger finally kicked in... i wonder if it will come back... hmmm....

Well here are my logs incase you see anything in there...

AutoRun.inf This was the culprit :) Well hidden. One final scan to confirm it has all gone - then I will remove all my tools

Please download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware from Here or Here

Double Click mbam-setup.exe to install the application.
  • Make sure a checkmark is placed next to Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, then click Finish.
  • If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
  • Once the program has loaded, select "Perform Quick Scan", then click Scan.
