Geeks to Go Team,

I’m working on a users machine. Popups are being generated regularly when the user starts IE 7. The computer is Win XP SP2 with the latest Windows updates. We run Sophos anti-virus, update machine with WSUS and control IE settings via AD group policy. Unfortunately our users have Local Admin rights… We use VNC and Dameware for administrative purposes so ignore those in the Hijackthis logs.

I have performed several manual virus scans with Sophos, purged the IE stuff and I have even run a Trendmicro House call scan. I cannot figure out where these popups are coming from.

Please help. I am almost at the point that I’m going to cure the disease by killing the patient and reimage.

Many thanks,
TB-Kane

Hi,
Welcome to the site, Sorry avbout the delay. We are very busy at the moment.

I will be handling your log to help you get cleaned up. Please give me some time to look it over and I will get back to you as soon as possible.

I want you to show hidden files. There are instructions HERE to help you do this.
You should have Administrator rights to perform the fixes. Some of the instructions I give may need to be printed or saved for reference during the fix. Some of the fix will be done in Safe Mode so you will be unable to access this thread at that time.
Please dont use any of the tools without specific instructions. Some of them are dangerous (and could leave your computer in worse condition that it is when infected) if used incorrectly.
These instructions should be read first, then followed. If you do not understand something, don't be afraid to ask, or see if I'm on chat. :)

As it has been a few days since you posted your Hijack this log, can you please post a freshly scanned one. This is because your computers condidtion may have changed.

SarahW,

Thanks for the reply.

I downloaded Sunbelt's CounterSpy and ran a full scan on the machine in question. Found one item that CounterSpy identified as SLagent/Navipromo.

http://research.sunb...;threatid=14860

I let CounterSpy try to take care of the malware but it came back.

Based on some additional reading it is likely some variant of the above. F-secure had a nice description of Navipromo:

http://www.f-secure....navipromo.shtml

Based on the "Rootkit" wording from F-secure - This machine will be reimaged.

Cheers,
TB-Kane
