HJT log
I am another victim of the Smitfraud.c trojan virus. Following advice I saw on internet sites I was able to remove enough trojan files from Windows and the registry to recover the appearance of the desktop and to allow IE to stop opening automatically on booting up. After using AVG, Spybot, Ad-Aware, and MS AntiSpy removal programs, no viruses or Trojans appear on scans. However some problems remain.
1. The Trojan put something in my system (registry?) that caused IE to always open to “about blank” page upon which 2 or 3 new viruses in Windows or Windows32 would immediately be detected by AVG and would have to be instantly removed. No matter how I tried to change the startup IE page to Yahoo, using changing it in the registry or in IE it would always revert to “blank page” and 2 or 3 new infected files each time. Finally with the use of MS AntiSpy (restore- IE- settings utility) I was able to block this effect. However the bad actors must still be on my computer and I see a number of strange entries in the HijackThis log. I need someone knowledgeable to help me identify and get rid of them.
2. I no longer have a host file at Windows\system32\drivers\etc. I don’t know when or why it was removed but when I paste a copy back in and reboot, it disappears again. I used the deldomains.inf at one point and wonder if this could be the cause. The Avg antivirus e-mail scan is now dysfunctional. I think the missing host file might be the cause of this.
I appreciate any help you can give me. Here is the HijackThis log.

Welcome to GeeksToGo.

That DelDomains should not have deleted the hosts file. We will fix the infection you have here first. Remind us that you are missing the hosts file if it's still not recreated when we are done here.

Before you do anything else, please create a folder for HijackThis and put it in a permanent folder (like C:\HJT) instead of the Temp folder. This is required because HijackThis will create backups and we don't want them to be deleted.

Please print out or copy this page to Notepad. Make sure to work through the fixes in the exact order it is mentioned below. If there's anything that you don't understand, ask your question(s) before proceeding with the fixes. You should 'not' have any open browsers when you are following the procedures below.

Go to My Computer->Tools/View->Folder Options->View tab and make sure that 'Show hidden files and folders' (or 'Show all files') is enabled. Also make sure that 'Display the contents of system folders' is checked. If you have Windows XP, the search feature is a little different. When you click on 'All files and folders' on the left pane, click on the 'More advanced options' at the bottom. Make sure that 'Search system folders', 'Search hidden files and folders', and 'Search subfolders' are checked.

For the options that you checked/enabled earlier, you may uncheck them after your log is clean. If we ask you to fix a program that you use or want to keep, please post back saying that (we don't know every program that exists, so we may tell you to delete a program that we think is bad to keep).

Download AboutBuster http://www.greyknigh...AboutBuster.zip and unzip it to a folder on your the Desktop. Run AboutBuster and click OK. Click Update and then Check For Update to see if there are any updates. Close the program now.

Reboot into Safe Mode by hitting the F8 key until menu shows up. In some systems, this may be the F5 key, so try that if F8 doesn't work.
Go to Start->Run and type in services.msc and hit OK. Then look for Workstation NetLogon Service ( 11Fßä #•ºÄÖ`I) and double click on it. Click on the Stop button and under Startup type, choose Disabled.

Make sure to close any open browsers. Go into HijackThis->Config->Misc. Tools->Open process manager. Select the following and click 'Kill process' for each one if they are still listed (they shouldn't be - but double check):

C:\Program Files\Viewpoint\Viewpoint Manager\ViewMgr.exe

Uninstall the following via the Add/Remove Panel (Start->(Settings)->Control Panel->Add/Remove Programs) if they exist:

Viewpoint

Run a scan in HijackThis. Check each of the following and hit 'Fix checked' (after checking them) if they still exist (make sure not to miss any):

R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Bar = res://C:\WINDOWS\system32\hxdoa.dll/sp.html#37049

Run AboutBuster and click OK. Click Start->OK and then follow the rest of the prompts to scan (choose Yes/OK for all). It will ask you if you want a second scan, choose Yes. Save the log file and post it here.

Delete the following Files/Folders (delete folders if no filename is specified) according to their directory (if none, just do a search for them) and delete them if they exist:

C:\Program Files\Viewpoint\
C:\WINDOWS\system32\hxdoa.dll
C:\WINDOWS\apiia32.exe

Reboot into Normal Mode run a new HijackThis scan. Save the log file and post it here.

I am not sure if this is where to post this.
I followed your instructions and here are the logfiles.
I repasted my host file in place and it now stays there after booting. Everything seems normal now. Assuming the logs look good to you then hopefully I am cured and I thank you very much.

Yes, we're basically done here. Just fix this one also in HijackThis:

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [AlcxMonitor] ALCXMNTR.EXE

No need for a new log.

Turn off system restore by right clicking on My Computer and go to Properties->System Restore and check the box for Turn off System Restore. Click Apply and then OK. Restart your computer and uncheck the same box to enable System Restore.

Make sure to the latest updates for Windows and Internet Explorer at http://v5.windowsupd...t.aspx?ln=en-us.

Your log is clean.

To help prevent future spyware installations/infections, please read the Anti-Spyware Tutorial and use the tools provided.

Are there any problems now? If not, you should be set to go.
