I am writing from my clean desktop because my laptop has been taken over...here's my story
I have a Dell Inspiron E1505 running Windows XP Home Media
I have TrendMicro as my main virus protection but since have downloaded and used SuperAntiSpyware, DrWeb Cureit, ATF Cleaner, HiJackThis, and have tried Ad-Aware but it will not allow the scan to start.

I am also limited to how much I can use my computer. Sometimes i can open a few applications and get away with it but then things start disappearing and error messages coming up as "application failed"
It seems like when I first reboot my computer I can accomplish some task but then things go bad.

SuperAntiSpyware is the only one that finds Rootkit.TnCore/Trace and I go through the complete process of removal and reboot but it comes back.
Trend Micro found something called TROJ_Generic ADV and said it got rid of it.

I know that the file name core.cache.dsk is related to the Rootkit issue and nothing can remove it from my system.

I think this is a left over problem from several months ago....I use Firefox but all of a sudden IE started popping up with multiple adds. I couldn't stop it and I found a way to delete IE from my computer. Since MicroTrend didn't find the virus anymore I thought my computer was safe. Now I'm thinking it was hidden and now taking over.

Can Anyone please help me with this??

Thanks so much for you time!
:)

Hello

Please download ComboFix from Here or Here to your Desktop.

**Note: In the event you already have Combofix, this is a new version that I need you to download. It is important that it is saved directly to your desktop**
  • Please, never rename Combofix unless instructed.
  • Close any open browsers.
  • Close/disable all anti virus and anti malware programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix.

    -----------------------------------------------------------

    • Very Important! Temporarily disable your anti-virus, script blocking and any anti-malware real-time protection before performing a scan. They can interfere with ComboFix or remove some of its embedded files which may cause "unpredictable results".
    • Click on this link to see a list of programs that should be disabled. The list is not all inclusive. If yours is not listed and you don't know how to disable it, please ask.

      -----------------------------------------------------------

    • Close any open browsers.
    • WARNING: Combofix will disconnect your machine from the Internet as soon as it starts
    • Please do not attempt to re-connect your machine back to the Internet until Combofix has completely finished.
    • If there is no internet connection after running Combofix, then restart your computer to restore back your connection.

    -----------------------------------------------------------

  • Double click on combofix.exe & follow the prompts.
  • When finished, it will produce a report for you.
  • Please post the "C:\ComboFix.txt" along with a new HijackThis log for further review.
**Note: Do not mouseclick combofix's window while it's running. That may cause it to stall**

CLICK HERE to download the HijackThis Installer:
  • Save HJTInstall.exe to your desktop.
  • Double-click on HJTInstall.exe to run the program.
  • By default it will install to C:\Program Files\Trend Micro\HijackThis.
  • Accept the license agreement by clicking the "I Accept" button.
  • Click on the "Do a system scan and save a log file" button. It will scan and then ask you to save the log.
  • Click "Save log" to save the log file and then the log will open in Notepad.
  • Click on "Edit -> Select All" then click on "Edit -> Copy" to copy the entire contents of the log.
  • Come back here to this thread and paste the log in your next reply.
  • Do NOT have HijackThis fix anything yet! Most of what it finds will be harmless or even required.

I have been waiting for the Combofix Log Report but something happend and I'm thinking it has screwed things up.

This is what happend...

ComboFix rebooted and was on the screen "Preparing Log Report" and then WinPatrol, which is in my startup, popped up with a detection of a Host change. Before I could even finish reading the WinPatrol message an error message popped up that was titled

Catchme.tmp - Application Error
then another
Sed.cfexe - Application Error

Also MicroTrend was trying to load the whole time. I thought that I disabled both of those applications but when the system rebooted they came back on.

Ok, now the log has finished and I will copy and past it in my next reply...along with the hijackthis.

Nope I don't see it

The log should be in C:\ComboFix

If it isn't then, run ComboFix.exe again and post the log

Refering to the picture above, drag CFScript into ComboFix.exe

When finished, it shall produce a log for you at "C:\ComboFix.txt"

Ok, when the combofix log was finished and had the report open, I closed it and only had a blank screen (my desktop screen with nothing on it)
I did Ctrl Alt Del to restart and when it rebooted an error message titled "Data Execution Prevention" "Windows had closed this application error.

My system would not let me access any programs...they all would come up with an error message.
I did another reboot and quickly ran Hijackthis before anything else could run and this is what I got....

The Kaspersky Scanner must run with IE 6 and I don't have this. There is an option to run a scan on certain files...but I wouldn't know what to do.

Bad news.....aggghhh! This thing is awful.
Anyway, during the scan error messages came up and I just ignored them. I was afraid if I clicked ok it would close Malwarebytes.
It finished the scan and had 9 infections. As soon as it started to delete the first file and error message popped up and would not let it get to any of the applications or files.
The list disappeared and then shut down.

I had to restart my computer and after doing so I checked to see if there was any log and there was not.

I did a quick scan just to see if I could come up with something and it did find 7 of the 9. Once again, when i told it to remove them I started getting "windows" type error messages.

The first message was...

Registry Editor
Cannot Export C:\documents and Settings\T. Tisdale\Application Data\Malwarebytes.....|Quarantine\QUAR3.97700: Error opening the file.

I am going to try to reboot again. I am having to send you this from my desktop computer.

Thanks
Tracy
