Hello,

I've got issues on my computer. I tried the things listed under "read this first before posting", but my computer is still very slow and unresponsive. I suspect that there are infections that I haven't been able to get rid of.

Please let me know what to do.

Thnaks in advance!!

Miles

Hi Miles, let's see if we can get to the bottom of this :)

Please print the below instructions or copy them to Notepad. Make sure to work through the fixes in the order mentioned below. If there's anything that you don't understand, ask your question(s) before proceeding with the fixes.

Run a scan in HijackThis. Check each of the following if they still exist and hit 'Fix Checked' after you checked the last one:

O23 - Service: WinSock Extention Manager - Unknown owner - C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\mdmcls32.exe

Go into HijackThis->Config->Misc Tools->Delete an NT service and type in WinSock Extention Manager and hit OK. If it gives you problem deleting it, go to Start->Run and type in services.msc and hit OK. Then look for WinSock Extention Manager and double click on it. Click on the Stop button. Then try deleting it again.

Locate the following Files/Folders and delete them if they exist (if no location given, just do a search for them):

C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\mdmcls32.exe

1. Download combofix at http://www.techsuppo...Bs/ComboFix.exe or http://download.blee...Bs/ComboFix.exe
2. Double-click combofix.exe & follow the prompts.
3. When finished, it will produce a log for you. Post that log in your next reply.

Note:
Do not click on combofix's window while it's running. That may cause it to stall.

Hi greyknight,

I did what you suggested.

When I went to the service WinSock Extention Manager it was disabled so there was nothing to stop.

I searched but could not find C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\mdmcls32.exe

I ran combofix and the log is below.

Thanks, Miles

Uninstall Viewpoint and CA AntiSpyware (since you have SUPERAntispyware already....no need for both).

Open up your Notepad editor (Start->Run, type in notepad and click OK). Copy and paste the text into the quotebox below:

File::
C:\WINDOWS\system32\drivers\kmxcfg.u2k7
C:\WINDOWS\system32\drivers\kmxcfg.u2k6
C:\WINDOWS\system32\drivers\kmxcfg.u2k5
C:\WINDOWS\system32\drivers\kmxcfg.u2k4
C:\WINDOWS\system32\drivers\kmxcfg.u2k3
C:\WINDOWS\system32\drivers\kmxcfg.u2k2
C:\WINDOWS\system32\drivers\kmxcfg.u2k1
C:\WINDOWS\system32\drivers\kmxcfg.u2k0
C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\mdmcls32.exe
C:\Documents and Settings\ryan lovelace\Application Data\tvmcwrd.dll
C:\Documents and Settings\brittany lovelace\Application Data\tvmcwrd.dll
C:\Documents and Settings\courtney lovelace\Application Data\tvmcwrd.dll

Save this as CFScript.txt in the same location as the ComboFix.exe tool.
Drag the CFScript.txt into ComboFix.exe
Follow the prompts. When finished, it shall produce a log for you. Post that log in your next reply.

Note: Do not click on combofix's window while it's running. That may cause it to stall.

Post a new HijackThis log here.

Any improvement?

Hi greyknight,

I'm sending you this from my computer at work....not the one at home having problems.
Sorry I didn't get back to you sooner, but I lost my internet connection on the affected computer (at home) and can't seem to get it back. I have an internnet connection on another computer at home, so it's not a problem with the modem, router, or the ISP. I checked all the connections to the computer as well and they seem to be fine. I can get access to drives on the other computer on our home network so the networking seems to be working between home computers....just no internet on the one computer.

I'm at a loss right now. From your list, all I was able to do is unistall viewpoint. I tried to drag the CFScript.txt file into ComboFix.exe but that didn't work. After that I lost my connection to the internet.

I'm at a loss...not sure what to do next. Any ideas? Should I try to go back to a restore point?

Hi Miles, did you uninstall the CA software? I see that it has a firewall and wondering if that might have thrown things off...

Check your Windows Firewall to see if it's enabled also.

If it still won't work, download the below tool from another computer. Save it to a CD or flash drive and use it on this non-working computer:

Download WinsockFix at http://www.greyknigh.../WinsockFix.zip and unzip it. Then double-click on WinsockFix.exe to run it. Click on the Fix button.

greyknight, thanks...I will do this when I get home and let you know what happpens.

Here's the deal with the CA software. It is a security suite provided free by my ISP (Time Warner Roadrunner) and it includes anti-spyware, aniti spam, anti-virus, firewall, etc. I run it on both my home computers. I can't uninstall the anti-spyware and/or firewall without uninstalling the entire suite and then I will be without anti-virus protection. What do you think I should do? Should I be using the free AVG free anti-virus instead....is it better?

I can disable the CA firewall without uninstalling it...which brings up another question. In a normal situation, does one have the Windows firewall enabled as well as another firewall, such as the CA one? Or is that redundant? I currently have the Windows firewall diabled.

greyknight,

Thanks for the winsock fix file...that did the trick and I'm back on the internet. What a relief! It also seems to ahve made my computer run better too.

I dragged the CFScript.txt into ComboFix.exe and it worked this time and then it rebooted my computer. Then it stalled while creating the log, so I had to close the window. Should I try it again? I ran hijackthis and the log file is below.

Thanks, Miles

You may keep the CA package if you want, but I usually don't like these security packages as they use more resources than necessary. Using AVG Antivirus (free) and the Windows Firewall or a third party firewall like ZoneAlarm (also has a free edition for personal use) should suffice. Add in a AntiSpyware program and you are basically set :)

If you don't intend to remove CA, remove the below lines from the CFScript.txt before running them or they will cause problems with CA:

C:\WINDOWS\system32\drivers\kmxcfg.u2k7
C:\WINDOWS\system32\drivers\kmxcfg.u2k6
C:\WINDOWS\system32\drivers\kmxcfg.u2k5
C:\WINDOWS\system32\drivers\kmxcfg.u2k4
C:\WINDOWS\system32\drivers\kmxcfg.u2k3
C:\WINDOWS\system32\drivers\kmxcfg.u2k2
C:\WINDOWS\system32\drivers\kmxcfg.u2k1
C:\WINDOWS\system32\drivers\kmxcfg.u2k0

Good job. Your log is clean.

To help prevent future spyware infections, read the Anti-Spyware Tutorial and use the tools provided.

Are there any problems now? If none, go to Start->Run, copy/paste in combofix /u and hit OK to remove it. You should be set to go.

greyknight,

That's good news...thanks!!

I want to make sure I understand you on what I still need to do. If I keep CA, then I delete those lines you listed from the CFScript.txt file...and then do I need drag the CFScript.txt file into ComboFix.exe again?

Or if I decide to delete CA and use a different anti-virus/anti-spyware/firewall solution, then I don't do the above, correct?

Please let me know and thanks again!!

That's correct. If you want, you can just delete those 4 files manually instead of using CFScript/Combofix for this. Just drag and drop them into your Recycle Bin. Leave them there for about a week and make sure all your programs are running ok. Then empty it.

You may ignore the instructions above. If you do decide to remove CA, just uninstall it via the Add/Remove Programs panel. There are many other alternatives you can use if you don't like CA. I have been using a free antivirus, antispypware and firewall program for years now and am happy with them :)

If you have no further questions/problems, post back once more and I will close this topic.
