New cd dvd drive wont recognize old cd's

Recently installed new LG HL-DT-ST-DVD-RAM GSA-H55N (cd-dvd drive). While I have been able to install some of my old programs with old original cd's it doesn't recognize some of them. Can I add a generic driver to the system that will automatically detect these older cd's? The old cd drive still works ...should I add it back in and reinstall its original software. Can it be done without affecting the new drive. I have space in tower to do so.
