My Vista desktop has been running sluggish for about a week now. Upon viewing all of my programs, I noticed two icons that resemble blank documents. When I right-clicked them, one read: www.protectmanual.com/soft/ and the other read: www.protectmanual.com/test/. I figured they were viruses bc when I clicked on one of them, it started running some program so I closed out of it. So I then ran a manual AVG virus sweep and it detected: nfantiques_com[1].htm but it was not able to "heal" it so I put it in the vault. I haven't been able to find any definitive solutions for clearing this up, since I use Vista. Can you help?

Hello collins5

Welcome to G2Go. :)
=====================
* Click here to download HJTsetup.exe
  • Save HJTsetup.exe to your desktop.
  • Doubleclick on the HJTsetup.exe icon on your desktop.
  • By default it will install to C:\Program Files\Trend Micro\Hijack This.
  • Click on I agree
  • Then Click on the Do a system scan and save a logfile button. It will scan and the log should open in notepad.
  • Click on "Edit > Select All" then click on "Edit > Copy" to copy the entire contents of the log.
  • Come back here to this thread and Paste the log in your next reply.
  • DO NOT have Hijack This fix anything yet. Most of what it finds will be harmless or even required.

I see that you are running msconfig in /auto mode which means that you may have selectively removed some items in the past from the startup procedure. This can be bad if they are malware, so we would like you to reenable those startup entries by doing the following:

Please click on start, search then then run, and type msconfig and then press enter. When the window opens click on the startup tab and make sure there are checkmarks in every entry. Then press ok until you are out of the program. If it asks to reboot, do not reboot.

Now please create a new Hijackthis Log and post it as a reply.

When I opened msconfig, then Startup Tab, all items already had checkmarks next to them and were already enabled.

Please download Deckard's System Scanner (DSS) and save it to your Desktop.
  • Close all other windows before proceeding.
  • Double-click on dss.exe and follow the prompts.
  • When it has finished, dss will open two Notepads main.txt and extra.txt -- please copy (CTRL+A and then CTRL+C) and paste (CTRL+V) the contents of main.txt and extra.txt in your next reply.

I uninstalled AVG Anti-virus prgram, Ran the ATF Cleaner and freed up 33.133 MBs, then I ran the Kaspersky Online Scanner. It shows that I have 6 viruses and 33 infected files. However, it will not allow me to save the results of the scan onto my desktop. It keeps telling me that for my security it has saved the file into a Temporary folder. When I look into that temporary folder, the actual report is not there so I am not able to copy and forward to you.

Download Dr.Web CureIt to the desktop:
ftp://ftp.drweb.com/pub/drweb/cureit/drweb-cureit.exe
  • Doubleclick the drweb-cureit.exe file and Allow to run the express scan
  • This will scan the files currently running in memory and when something is found, click the yes button when it asks you if you want to cure it. This is only a short scan.
  • Once the short scan has finished, mark the drives that you want to scan.
  • Select all drives. A red dot shows which drives have been chosen.
  • Click the green arrow at the right, and the scan will start.
  • Click 'Yes to all' if it asks if you want to cure/move the file.
  • When the scan has finished, in the menu, click file and choose save report list
  • Save the report to your desktop. The report will be called DrWeb.csv
  • Close Dr.Web Cureit.
  • Post that log in your next reply.

(Note if you cannot open the log it produces then right click on it and choose rename.
Rename it to .txt and you will be able to open it)
