Hi ltuhy, welcome to G2G.

Can you please provide more information?

When does this happen?
When did it start happening?
Have you tried using System Restore to go back to a date before it started happening?

This happens upon log in. I log in and the desktop icons, startup menu shows up like everythings fine, then all of a sudden the icons disappear and start menu disappear. I can get into internet explorer by running a "new task" from the ctrl-alt-del thingy (task manager?).

Started last night. was surfing internet and norton antivirus said it blocked a couple attempts at something then boom, desktop started disappearing/reappearaing.

Also tried system restore in safemode but that didn't work. (tried a couple times...) safemode also exhibits this phenomenon so its hard to start any applications. You have to be quick before the desktop disappears again...

Also, restore didn't highlight a date or let me pick a date earlier than when this happened.

This sounds suspiciously like a malware problem.

Go to the Malware Forum and run all the steps located in the START HERE. These self-help tools will help you clean up 70% of problems on your own. If you are still having problems after doing the steps, then please post a HiJackThis Log in THAT forum. If you are unable to run and/or post a HJT log, then post that in your initial post in the topic you create in that forum.

If you are still having problems after being given a clean bill of health from the malware expert, then please return to THIS thread and we will pursue other options to help you solve your current problem(s).
