I had AVG anti-virus free and anti-spyware free but it would only freeze up my computer, so I uninstalled. Also, every time I run spybot search & destroy, it gets halfway through and my computer freezes completely, can't move my mouse, can't move anything. Please, please, please help!

Firstly we will clear all your old Javas and update to a spanking new version. This should reclaim about 500 MB

Your Java is out of date. Older versions have vulnerabilities that malicious sites can use to infect your system. Please follow these steps to remove older version Java components and update:

• Download the latest version of Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6 Update 6 and save it to your desktop.
• Scroll down to where it says "Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6 Update 6...allows end-users to run Java applications".
• Click the "Download" button to the right.
• Read the License Agreement and then check the box that says: "Accept License Agreement". The page will refresh.
• Click on the link to download Windows Offline Installation and save the file to your desktop.
• Close any programs you may have running - especially your web browser.
• Go to Start > Settings > Control Panel, double-click on Add/Remove Programs and remove all older versions of Java.
• Check (highlight) any item with Java Runtime Environment (JRE or J2SE) in the name.

I did exactly as you said. The defragmentation went fine! But then, I opened Mozilla Firefox to reply to this topic and tell you that everything went fine, my entire computer froze again and I had to use the button to turn it off and then on again. Everything is still terribly slow, though I do have 2GB of free space on my C drive now! What else could it be? Thanks!

Hmm intriguing let me try a malware scan to ensure that I haven't missed anything - then I will try an optimisation run

Please download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware from Here or Here

Double Click mbam-setup.exe to install the application.

• Make sure a checkmark is placed next to Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, then click Finish.
• If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
• Once the program has loaded, select "Perform Quick Scan", then click Scan.
• The scan may take some time to finish,so please be patient.
• When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
• Make sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
• When disinfection is completed, a log will open in Notepad and you may be prompted to Restart.(See Extra Note)
• The log is automatically saved by MBAM and can be viewed by clicking the Logs tab in MBAM.
• Copy&Paste the entire report in your next reply.

Extra Note:

OK that changes things slightly as they were not evident on the 30 day search -- so I will now go deeper and longer. Yi=ou appear to have had mywebsearch from a while back

Download OTScanit to your Desktop and double-click on it to extract the files. It will create a folder named OTScanIt on your desktop.

• Close ALL OTHER PROGRAMS.
• Open the OTScanit folder and double-click on OTScanit.exe to start the program.
• Check the box that says Scan All User Accounts
• Check the Radio buttons for Files/Folders Created Within 90 Days and Files/Folders Modified Within 90 Days
• Under Additional Scans check the following:
  • Reg - File - Lop Check
  • Reg - BotCheck
  • Reg - Desktop Components
  • Reg - Disabled MS Config Items
  • File - Additional Folder Scans
  • File - Purity Scan
• Now click the Run Scan button on the toolbar.
• Let it run unhindered until it finishes.
• When the scan is complete Notepad will open with the report file loaded in it.
• Click the Format menu and make sure that Wordwrap is not checked. If it is then click on it to uncheck it.

Here's the file scanner. I was very happy with the results of the malware scan, because usually those kinds of scans don't find anything on my system. Before I read your most recent reply, I tried doing a full scan and my computer froze up and shut down. I just thought I'd add that. x__x But I did as you requested, and the file is attached. It's still going slow and freezing up completely from time to time. I mean, the speed has definitely improved from before, but it's still frustrating how long it takes to go to a website or when everything shuts off or freezes. I'm going to try again to run a full scan of the antiMalware program you had me download. Hopefully it will go through all the way without freezing and shutting down and if it does, I'll post the results, I suppose. I don't know what's going on with this stupid computer. ><

Hmm it is starting to feel like a hardware side problem. As all we have removed so far is my websearch and that does not generally slow the machine down that much. Whne your system shuts off do you get a blue screen with an explanation on it or does it just reboot ? As that may indicate a heating problem on your MB

It usually doesn't have a blue screen, no, but sometimes once it reboots, there's a box that says sysdata.xml or minidump.dmp files.
