Dell 600m purchased on 2004. Windows XP pro SP2.

The situation is complicating. I am not very good at computer, so please bear with me if my description is not clear enough to get help. Please let me know what information I need to provide to fix my notebook. Thank you in advance.

I had some trouble to boot up my notebooks due to pciide.sys is corrupted a week ago. I found a way to fix it (I hope) and now can boot from windows XP pro, but found many icons disappear. I also had "not enough quota" problem, but I increased the paging to fix it (I hope). However, if I try to boot from Windows XP pro SP2 setup, "pciide.sys is corrupted" shows and will not allow my notebook to boot up. I have to use Windows XP pro to boot up my notebook instead.

The following is the diagnosis from runscanner. Please help me. Thank you!

you have an awful lot of stuff running at the same time

did you run runscanner in expert mode?
and if you did, did anything come up marked in red?

also,
use the XP disk and run
sfc /scannow from 'start' 'run'
this is to check and replace system files that are missing or corrupt
sometimes it will do the fix

post if it fixed it or not, please

Thank you for answering.

I tried

sfc /scannow from 'start' 'run'

But after reboot, it still shows as before
"please select operation system...
Microsoft windows XP pro
Microsoft windows XP pro Setup
..."

If I choose Microsoft windows XP pro Setup
then it show "pciide.sys is corrupted"
and reboot it itself.

However, if I choose Microsoft windows XP pro
it works.

Questions:
1. How can I reset it, so it will automatically choose Microsoft windows XP pro as before?
2. Should I be worried that Microsoft windows XP pro Setup has "pciide.sys is corrupted"?

Thank you again for answering.

Thank you for reply.

Here you are.

[Boot Loader]
Timeout=5
Default=C:\$WIN_NT$.~BT\BOOTSECT.DAT
[Operating Systems]
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS="Microsoft Windows XP Professional" /noexecute=optin /fastdetect
C:\$WIN_NT$.~BT\BOOTSECT.DAT="Microsoft Windows XP Professional Setup"

I think I figure out what problem my notebook has. I upgraded to Trend Macro PC-dillin internet sercurity 2008, and my notebook started to get slow. So, I uninstall some programs to get it fast including WindowBlinds. I think the icons disappear after I used Windows default setting and then after a while, my notebook started to get crazy on me. I reinstalled trial version Windowsblinds and get icons back. I hope after the trial period if I uninstall it, the default icons will not disappear again. I also switched back to Trend Macro PC-dillin internet sercurity 2007, which works better than the new version in my notebook.

Thanks.

Ok, plus you have logitec desktop, they may be conflicting.

You can delete this line from the notepad and save it when you close it.

C:\$WIN_NT$.~BT\BOOTSECT.DAT="Microsoft Windows XP Professional Setup"

Hi,

I delete the line as you suggested. The new information is as follows.

[Boot Loader]
Timeout=5
Default=C:\$WIN_NT$.~BT\BOOTSECT.DAT
[Operating Systems]
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS="Microsoft Windows XP Professional" /noexecute=optin /fastdetect

However, a similar problem happens.

After reboot, it shows:
"please select operation system...
Microsoft windows XP pro
Windows (default)
..."

If I choose Windows (default)
then it show "pciide.sys is corrupted"
and reboot it itself.

However, if I choose Microsoft windows XP pro
it works.

My questions are the same:

1. How can I reset it, so it will automatically choose Microsoft windows XP pro as before?
2. Should I be worried that "pciide.sys is corrupted"?

Thank you again for help.

well.. hmmm...

this what mine reads

[boot loader]
timeout=30
default=multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS
[operating systems]
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS="Microsoft Windows XP Professional" /fastdetect /NoExecute=OptIn

This is yours-

[Boot Loader]
Timeout=5
Default=C:\$WIN_NT$.~BT\BOOTSECT.DAT
[Operating Systems]
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS="Microsoft Windows XP Professional" /noexecute=optin /fastdetect

Maybe some one would like to add some more help here.

Why is this line in here and can it be deleted?
Or is that the problem?

Default=C:\$WIN_NT$.~BT\BOOTSECT.DAT

I replace this part /fastdetect /NoExecute=OptIn
Unfortunately, it does not help. The same problem still happens.

Should I change this Default=C:\$WIN_NT$.~BT\BOOTSECT.DAT?
I have two partitions C and D in this hard drive.

Any other idea?

Thank you.

You need to change the default boot to:

Default=C:\WINDOWS

That should fix it.

Also, look at your C: drive and see if there is a folder that starts with C:\$WIN_NT$. That is where the bad line in boot.ini was pointing. You should be able to delete this once you have the good C:\Windows working.

Hi Ztrucker and cmpm,

Thank you very much.

It helps, but I still have a tiny problem.

I changed boot.ini to:

[Boot Loader]
Timeout=5
Default=C:\WINDOWS
[Operating Systems]
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS="Microsoft Windows XP Professional" /fastdetect /NoExecute=OptIn

Now, I can still see the screen after bio

"please select operation system...
Microsoft windows XP pro
Windows (default)
..."

The highlight is on Windows (default), but now it does open Windows WITHOUT "pciide.sys is corrupted"

Questions:
1. Is it normal to see this screen?

"please select operation system...
Microsoft windows XP pro
Windows (default)
..."

I never notice it before. Is there a way to make it gone and make it open with Microsoft windows XP pro, not Windows (default)? I did notice open with Windows (default) takes a little bit longer and scary. I am afraid it might die when try to open.

Thank you both again!

Yes, that should stay there for 5 seconds from the setting in your boot.ini file. If you don't want to see it at all, change it to

Timeout=0
